It's an idea, but not something that will happen within next 50-100 years at least, unless there will be a major breakthrough in solarpanel technology.

At it's current state it barely pays off to own these.
However, there are some advancements made. Recent one was a totally see-through / transparent solarpanel that can be used instead of regular glass.
The downside was it only held 1% of the power a regular (which is weak enough) panel.
