I am fortunate to be among those unaffected by the recent calamity. The storm veered to the south of us, giving us only slightly strong winds and a little rain.
Mayon volcano, from which the mudslides originated (what with loose lava on the surface from an eruption a couple of months earlier), is quite far from our place, probably 300 kilometers away.
The tragedy from the mudslide was really great. Everyone was preparing for the strong typhoon (Durian), but the mudslide was unexpected, reaching populated areas well beyond the permanent 5-kilometer danger zone around the volcano. Deaths are reaching the 800 count with lots of persons still missing.
