Default How to Improve Iron Supplementation

If you need supplemental iron, you may want to consider also supplementing with zinc.

Concomitant Zinc Supplementation May Benefit Women Taking Iron Supplements

"Supplementing young women with both zinc and iron protects zinc-related antioxidant indicators previously impaired by iron supplementation," Kamp F, Donangelo CM, J Nutr, 2008; 138(11): 2186-9. (Address: Laboratrio de Bioqumica Nutricional e de Alimentos, Departamento de Bioqumica, Instituto de Qumica, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, 21941-909 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).

In a study involving 18 women aged 22-31 years, taking iron supplements, concomitant supplementation with zinc was found to exert a protective effect against iron supplementation-induced antioxidant status impairment.

For a period of 8 weeks, subjecgts were supplemented with iron (50 mg/d). For another 8 weeks, subjects were supplemented with iron (50 mg/d) and zinc (25 mg/d).

Antioxidant status was found to be impaired following the iron supplementation period (decreased FRAP, and delta-ALAD activity, and increased EOF, compared with baseline). However, zinc + iron supplementation increased FRAP, returned delta-ALAD activity and EOF to baseline levels. Additionally, iron and zinc supplementation did not affect indicators of iron status but increased serum and urinary zinc.

Thus, the authors of this study conclude, "…supplementing young women with both zinc and iron protects zinc-related antioxidant indicators previously impaired by iron supplementation without impairment of iron status."
