\r\n \r\n Circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration is inversely associated with peripheral arterial disease and hypertension. Vascular remodeling may play a role in this association, however, data relating vitamin D level to specific remodeling biomarkers among ESRD patients is sparse.
\n
\nWe tested whether 25(OH)D concentration is associated with markers of vascular remodeling and inflammation in African American ESRD patients.
\n
\nMethods: We conducted a cross-sectional study among ESRD patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis within Emory University-affiliated outpatient hemodialysis units. Demographic, clinical and dialysis treatment data were collected via direct patient interview and review of patients records at the time of enrollment, and each patient gave blood samples.
\n
\nAssociations between 25(OH)D and biomarker concentrations were estimated in univariate analyses using Pearson\'s correlation coefficients and in multivariate analyses using linear regression models. 25(OH) D concentration was entered in multivariate linear regression models as a continuous variable and binary variable (<15 ng/ml and greater than or equal to 15 ng/ml).
\n
\nAdjusted estimate concentrations of biomarkers were compared between 25(OH) D groups using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Finally, results were stratified by vascular access type.
\n
\nResults: Among 91 patients, mean (standard deviation) 25(OH)D concentration was 18.8 (9.6) ng/ml, and was low (<15 ng/ml) in 43% of patients.
\n
\nIn univariate analyses, low 25(OH) D was associated with lower serum calcium, higher serum phosphorus, and higher LDL concentrations. 25(OH) D concentration was inversely correlated with MMP-9 concentration (r=-0.29, p=0.004).
\n
\nIn multivariate analyses, MMP-9 concentration remained negatively associated with 25(OH) D concentration (P=0.03) and anti-inflammatory IL-10 concentration positively correlated with 25(OH) D concentration (P=0.04).
\n
\nConclusions: Plasma MMP-9 and circulating 25(OH) D concentrations are significantly and inversely associated among ESRD patients. This finding may suggest a potential mechanism by which low circulating 25(OH) D functions as a cardiovascular risk factor.

Bear in mind that the ability of MMP 9\'s to cause damage affects other conditions such as MS (where mmp 9\'s destroy mylene sheath) and It\'s pretty likely they are setting up the scene for Alzheimer\'s to trigger the inevitable cascade
\n
\nWe don\'t have to be victims of vitamin D3 deficiency we can all see what it generally takes to keep around the 60ng/ml 150nmol/l.
\nThe guys in the above test were below the 20ng/ml line and they are pretty typical of MOST US/UK adults.

\nCost of Country Life, Gluten Free, Vitamin D3, 5,000 IU, 200 Softgels from IHERB is $7.92 (4.98) I prefer these because they are in MCT oil (very stable, less likely to go off and easily metabolised) I use Iherb as they ship cheapest to UK. You may find same product cheaper elsewhere depending on shipping cost to your location. Code WAB 666 for initial $5 IHERB discount if you don\'t.

Perhaps you could also try to encourage the use of magnesium and vitamin K2 MK4 along with the vit d.
\r\nWhat tends to happen is that taking an effective amount of vitamin D quadruples the amount of calcium absorbed from the diet and this requires counterbalancing with extra magnesium (we tend not to have sufficient magnesium in our diets) Ideally an Albion Patent mineral magnesium chelate smaller amounts taken with food through the day are better absorbed.
\r\n Adding the Vitamin K2 MK4 also helps prevent calcification of the arteries.\r\n
