Some so-called doctor thinks that maybe the government needs to take kids away from parents if the kids are obese..... and so it continues.... I bet michelle will jump on this one and put it into being

I think the government needs to keep its nose out of peoples private lives. Parents who let their kids become obese, at the most, should be educated about the negative health effects of being overweight. Perhaps introduced into counseling regarding healthier diets, or programs where they can do more activities outdoors and get in shape. Taking the kids away from the family is not the answer, just crazy IMO.

I have a fucking idea: lets remove fake fats, GMO and HFCS from the food products and have kids do physical education 45 minutes a day and then see how obese they are in a yr.

To be completely honest, I've never seen thin parents with obese kids. It's fat parents who have obese kids. When ever I see a really fat dog or fat, it's ironic that the owners always seem to be chunky as well.

I think the country needs to focus everybody and not just kids.

I actually think fastfood can be healthy if done right. For me Chipotle I am really impressed how you can get something that's low in calories and they don't inject their animals with the growth hormones and all the other nasty stuff. I'd like to see more restaurants like this pop open that is fast and healthy and inexpensive. Because it seems that a lot of times we can get fast, healthy, but cost us a arm and a leg.

and so what will the option be? only to send the kids to live with other fat people I suspect.

If they eliminated all the fat foster parents that would cut them down by about 30 to 40% in that system of care.

If parents are feeding their kids trash there needs to be some kind of recourse don't you thinK? Certainly not removal but what? Do parents have the right to malnourish their children to set them up for all the diseases we know now can come from it? When does it become abuse? where's the line?

I don't think exercise is enough in most cases... real diet changes are needed.

Chipotle. Personally I think they are horrible, my opinion only because it seems everyone loves them. But Men's Health had an article about them, they are so loaded with carbs, their burrito has twice the calories as a taco bell half pound burrito. But you are correct, we need healthier fast food chains but then again, 17 yrs ago (1994/95) taco bell had a healthy choice menu but they killed it since the demand was low.

My favorite (but you have to be in a city to find it or california/or/wa) is vietnamese food. Nothing like it, but where I live it would flop, people want that 3000 calorie 2 dollar special dripping with grease.

I am ranting (sorry): In 1980 I was in school for the summer and when I came home for the occasional weekend my parents and I would go to sunday brunch at this place in wellsburg WV. Buffett style and this family would be there every time we were. 400 pound dad, 400 pound mom, 200 pound 12 yr old kid.

I would be curious of a comparison between breast fed children and formula fed children. When they start feeding babies crap the minute they are born, what can we expect..... Arrow, in the link, it talks about a young girl who was taken away from her parents...she came home just as fat, nothing had changed, except then she was traumatized from being taken away from her parents...Yes I agree, parents need help, but taking them away from their parents and putting them into a messed up foster care system is not the way to do it... I agree with saved, get rid of the junk, and bring back recess and physical education. Get the kids away from the computer and the tv and the games, and get them outside to run and play, and see if we see any changes then

Like I suggested, I think just counseling the parents regarding healthier diets and ways of cooking foods for their kids, how to shop for healthy foods, educating them about the dangers of junk/fast foods, and programs where they can be more active and lose the weight.

I saw a TV show once with mothers and their obese toddlers. A couple of the mothers listened to all the advice and information about the negative health effects the over-feeding of junk food had on their babies. At the end of the show they agreed to counseling, and were willing to 'stop the madness', They equated food and treats with "love", and it's true, if I remember, they were overweight also.

First of all, it's not always the parents' fault...It's not always the child's fault either! I was an obese child, but I never ate much more than the average kids. I'd eat my veggies cause I liked them. So what would my parents do? Make me not eat anything? It wasn't like I was eating fast food every day...or fatty foods for that matter. I ate what my mom cooked for meals and it was nothing out of the ordinary.

I'd get my exercise playing around, but it was somewhat limited because I had severe athsma at the time. Sure, I'd use an inhaler, but by the time I was ok again, I'd usually be tired out from having to breathe so heavily. But I can't say that I didn't get a good amount of exercise. I played volleyball in middle school and I'd do a lot of hiking with my family. I was getting at least the right amount (maybe more than) of exercise for a kid/pre-teen.

People have to stop thinking that it's your lifestyle that causes obesity. I think it just happens in some people. I swear I eat more now as an adult, but I'm not nearly the size I was as a kid.

The problem in many homes is that they do not want to be re-educated... and the parents are addicted to junk food at least in some of the cases., and these addictions are real chemical addictions.

Of course, Kelly some kids are just fat no matter what you do. We are not talking about those types of cases, but where there is systemic family obesity and extremely poor eating habbits.

I was listening to a radio interview about folks in Mississippi. I guess in parts of that state there are a lot o obese folks. They interviewed several of them. They all ate trash and 3,000 cal upwards a day and their life span was relatively short, mostly from cardiac conditons.. In their opinon people, women in this case were not fat until the were over 300 pounds.. Yikes!

The program noted that the USA was the fattest country in the world and that Mississippi was the fattest state.... funny I thought that would be Missouri.. went through there once in the rural parts and I had never seen so many fat people in my life... not like that in Kansas City though.

They, the people on this radio program had absolutley no interest in changing... and they often mocked people who were normal weight...so this is the destiny of their kids, and we all pay for it one way or another cause they don't have insurance and if they did their monthly payments would not near cover the risk.

Default How could the govn counsel anyone on nutrition?

How could the government counsel anyone on nutrition? Look at the school food programs and daycare requirements. They cannot serve anything that is locally grown and they use everything unhealthy including cheap milk.

The article should have addresses these sources first I would think.

And hospital food - look at the label. What about ensure. Give me a break. Packed with sugar, artificial flavoring, msg, and gmo.

And what about all the children with ADHD? Everyone knows a vast majority of these children just lack good nutrition. Put a plant based supplement into these institutions and since most children now eat breakfast and lunch at school, we would see a remarkable change in many.

Oh and lets not forget the pop and fruit drinks which were added to the schools to raise money for school functions. What a joke.

You can tell these things make me upset. Just venting. Government needs to back off.

Agree. But that is not the goal, it is just the opposite you are being trained to accept that some government official has the right to tell you how to live your life. If you refuse they will step in and take charge. This is the new American way.

In Chicago there is a school that does not allow the parents to pack a lunch for their kids. They are only allowed to eat school food that follows the governments food pyramid. Personally I dont think that is any better then some of these fat kids diets.

I taught high school for one semester at a ghetto school and then quit. The discipline problems were unreal (the students were allowed to use the F bomb in class). But they had free lunch and breakfast. the free breakfast was a sweet roll. HFCS and partially hydrogenated fats.

Children are a reflection of their parents. Are y'all thinking that parents are intelligent? When you want to buy your kid a healthy fruit drink, do you look at the label? If you did, you would have a hard time finding one that has no HFCS. Do they know or care what hydrogenated means? Isn't it easier to teach the child to stick something in the microwave?

I think people should have no more children than they can afford. When i say afford, I don't necessarily mean financially. Can you afford to spend the time nurturing the child/infant? Do you feel up to making a good meal, when you come in from work? Is your career more important than your family? Then you can't afford a child.

When Russia became a communist country (USSR), they had a policy of taking the children from families and training them for the State. Soldiers, athletes, factory workers or engineers. Did it work? Was it wrong?
