Default If you are new to vbulletin

I thought I would start a thread to point out some nice options/functions that the vbulletin has.

I will start with what I posted in the MMS thread :

and for anyone new to it, just click on the various buttons and see what they do.

One thing I would recommend is:

Click on User CP
click on Edit Options

and set up the options the way you want them.

Kevin, with the forum this small, I would set the topic notification default to "instant email notification" or "daily email notification".

This will keep people coming back to threads that they are participating in when there are responses. sometimes, people don't realize this type of notification has to be set by them, and wonder why they aren't getting notified of activity. This way, it will default to notification.

one of the nice things about VBulletin is that you can search just a thread.

when you read any thread (topic), look at the upper right hand corner. you will see:

Thread Tools | Search this Thread | Rate Thread | Display Modes

if you click on "Search This Thread", you will see an input box.
type the word that you want to search for in the input box,
and click GO (to the right of the input box).

Default your birthday!

click User CP

click Edit User Profile

you can now enter your birthday. You can say whether you want your age displayed or just the month and day of your birthday.

I don't know if Kevin has birthday announcement enabled.. but if he does, birthdays will be announced!

a nice way addition for a community.

Thanks for the tips, nice summary, scorpiotiger. The default registration have been setup as subscription mode.

I think the 'thread tools' is quite useful, such as "printable version" and 'email this page'.

Kevin,

what is the time interval that you have set to let a person edit their post?

I am a real typing klutz, and I don't know how many times I've posted something, and didn't realize I had a typo/spelling error until I read it after I've posted it.

I know, I know.. I can preview, and I do. but.. sometimes, I forget and just post it.

so.. what is the edit time interval set to?

If you edit it within 2 minutes, the 'edited by' notes won't be displayed.

Sorry, I didn't get your question. You can edit your posts at any time, no time limitation. But if you modified it more than two minutes after the post date, the 'edit by' notes will be displayed.

So after you create a post, you read it and find typos, usually you can modify it very quickly, thus, no 'edit by' notes displayed.

ummm.. I don't think so. It allows you to edit them for a certain interval of time.. then no more.

look at one of your old posts, Kevin, and try to edit it (when you are not in admin mode).

for example, I can still edit the last 2 posts I made, but not the "birthday" one.

Default PM notification

I know the people here love the PM feature.

make sure that the PM notification feature is set the way you like it.
  1. click on User CP
  2. click on Edit Options
  3. scroll down to the Private Messaging box
  4. click the options you want
One thing you might want to check is to get some notification when you get a PM. most people like a pop-up box so they know when they go to the forum if they have a PM.

You can also opt to have an email sent.. that way, if you don't go to the forum all the time, you will still know when you get a PM.

Hey, it's starting to get colorful on the forum. This makes it more pleasant. Maybe someday I'll figure out how to post photos, figure out where to find photos.

Just images found on the net at this time. I think I might know how to do a personal photo. Did it one time.
