Default Acid Reflux in Babies:

Hey guys,

So baby has been having a bit of acid reflux, and I guess that's normal..

However, she also had some yellow mucus come out her nose and she seemed to be congested, went to the doctor and the doctor said it was part of the acid reflux... Am I being sold a bill of goods? I couldn't find ANYTHING online to corroborate that explanation.

Although after giving her the acid reflux medicine thingy she seems to have been getting a bit better.. But I'm still skeptical, and a bit worried...

Doctors are notorious for making us think things are normal when in fact they are only common. Reflux isn't normal. It's a sign that something needs attention and correction. Meds may cover the symptoms but won't address the root cause.

Milk is a big contributor to acid reflux. It also causes congestion and mucous.

so... you're saying that the breast milk could have an issue with it? Or.. What exactly are you trying to get at?

I'm a first time parent, wife is too, and the internet hasn't been too forthcoming with an answer....

Look into probiotics. Our chiropractor was able to give us a powder version that you can just have the baby suck some of the powder right off of your finger.

You can look up some studies on probiotics being effective for infant acid reflux. One to check out is called ""European Journal of Clinical Investigation"; Lactobacillus Reuteri Accelerates Gastric Emptying and Improves Regurgitation in Infants; Flavia Indria et al.; pp. 417--422, April 2011."

Thanks. I'll check it out.. She has gotten a lot better though. Some regurgitation is to be expected of course, as all babies spit up..

Everything seems to be going good, once we get her to a year old we can sort of back off the serious worrying (for a bit anyway)... lol...

Reflux is normal for some babies expecially up to the age of 3 months only in that the digestive tract is still not well developed enough. As the baby grows it should diminish and disappear.

You did not say what the diet is nor the age and that can make a difference. If this baby is breast fed is should not need probiotics.

Normally reflux will disappear after 3 months. If the baby is being fed formula it can disrupt normal developement to some degree and the reflux can be even worse because they are not digesting the formula well. These babies can also be subject to distended abdomens, gas and crying and constipation. Formula fed babies should be given some kind of probiotic and constipation should be prevented with a glycerine suppository when it is happening. Probiotics can help to prevent it. Formula fed babies may also be subject to developing allergies of various sorts.

and yes, the mucus out the nose can result from reflux.

I wonder what kind of antacid the doctor is giving as some are much more dangerous than others.

But all the doctors and sites say, as well as many forums I have read, that all babies have acid reflux?

So, you're saying over a million people have been hoodwinked? Well, it wouldn't be the first time, but Still.....
