Question Chronic Diarrhea in Kitten

Anyone have personal experience with chronic diarrhea in a kitten? He had it a month ago when we adopted him. Now, 5 months old (dewormed + shots), all fecals negative, incuding Idexx+Giardia. Was on Metronidazole Susp. (Flagyl) for 2 weeks, during this period, normal stool.

Diarrhea returned after meds ran out, and he was put on Panacur (1 week/still using), that's not as effective on relieving the symptoms. Although I want to get him away from all these antibiotics, at this time I don't want to experiment with natural supplements, he's due for a neutering soon.

I tried rice, potatoes and organic canned pumpkin, but he's not really food driven, and won't eat many things. I'm feeding him basically Blue Holistic dry kitten food, with small sides of sardines, chicken breast and tuna. He likes American cheese, but I'm afraid to give him too much, as I don't want to actually bind him up and constipate him.

Anyone had a cat with a chronic diarrhea problems that you were able to take care of? Thanks for any advice.

Good quality yoghurt is very helpful with intestinal track problems. The kitten may be allergic to some food item. Diarrhea is often a symptom of food allergy in animals.

Years ago I had a Samoyed who was violently allergic to corn, even tiny amounts of corn. I had problems with people at the dog park sneakily giving him dog biscuits. One little dog biscuit would cause horrible diarrhea for at least three days. I had told everybody never to give him dog biscuits because he was allergic, but a couple of ignorant people thought I was being mean and would slip him treats when I wasn't looking! I chased one of the offending woman down one day, screaming at her that she was going to come to my house and clean up the mess that was going to be caused because that dog biscuit I saw her give to him was going to make him sick. I scared her so much, she finally desisted. She had been causing me and my dog a lot of grief.

Our dog has been having gut problems lately and I find coloidal silver helps her, she is back to normal again now she had really runny black poo, but then she does tend to eat a lot things in the back yard like sticks and stones, and lemon leaves, even though I try and keep the yard tidy .
I don't know if CS would be ok for a kitten or not.
I would cut out milk if you are giving it to him and just give water

Thanks ladies for your advice and input, much appreciated. I'm with you dogwoman about others feeding my pets, even if it's a neighbor or friend, they'll usually ask if it's okay. I did offer the kitten a bit of plain greek yogurt before he went on antibiotics, and he didn't show any interest. He'll be going in for neutering next week, I hope that doesn't make things worse for him, keeping my fingers crossed.

Greek yoghurt is really sour. I cannot imagine a cat wanting to eat it. I mix Mountain High or homemade yoghurt with canned cat food when I give it to cats.

If a kitten/cat is not used to drinking milk, milk will likely cause the runs. If you are feeding milk to the kitten, it needs to be introduced to their diet a tiny bit at a time.

I've adopted a couple of puppies over the years who had normal looking stools, but the stools were horribly foul smelling for unknown reasons. Worming did not improve the odor. A dose of yoghurt each day for a couple of weeks rectified whatever was causing that foul smell.

Thanks dogwoman, good point about the greek yogurt. I haven't given him, and don't intend to give him any milk. Well, it's day 7 on the Panacur, and today/last night, he's had 2 normal BMs, yah! I don't even think this medicine has anything to do with it now, because the first antibiotic gave immediate results. Sooo...hoping that he's still doing well for his scheduled surgery. I'm a big fan of yogurt, I eat it everyday and have fed it to my pets in the past, but while on the meds, I think a probiotic would be useless.

Our dog had recurring diarrhea when he was a pup, we realized it was the yogurt we were adding to his food that was causing it... little guy is lactose intolerant, I guess!

We have to monitor his food carefully or it shows in his 'waste' instantly -

He is on fully holistic, organic food, very few ingredients and not too much protein - no beet pulp, no tomato pomace, no grains at all, especially corn...!

It has all been very gradual trial and error and we have him on a really good diet

Update: He had his neutering on the 17th, and is recovering nicely. I discontinued giving him the Panacur after the surgery. I've cut back on the plain chicken, tuna and sardines I was giving him (too much protein), and kept with the dry Blue Holistic Kitten Food. I started mixing white rice with fried ground meat, but he didn't eat it. Now I blended in the mixer some white rice with tuna, and he's been doing well with this along with the dry food (and American cheese for treats). Normal stools at last, hopefully will continue...he is a sweeet boy, and I want him to be a healthy one too!

Yeah! Glad he's getting better. What a good momma you are. Lucky little kittie. Enjoy! But now you'll always need to keep up the parasite cleansing for the whole fam.

There's some Feral cats running about here, and there was a couple of them last Fall that were in pretty bad shape, mucus running out of nose, extremely weak, sneezing, trouble breathing, watery diarrhea.
I've seen this before, so didn't mess around with the "maybe's",
~I keep a bottle of Penicillin G Procaine in the fridge, gave ea. one 1 1/2 cc. ea. and put them in a cardboard box til morning, made a big difference, so I then gave them an additional 1 cc. about noon, and a can of tuna for the both of them, and then let them go... it wasn't long and the black and white spotted one started hanging around the door after that, he's now sleeping in on Ma's chair in the living room... named him "Rocky"

~ a few years back, my daughters cat got sick just like that, it was going into a weekend... the local vet was about 70 miles aways, and he was out until the coming Monday... ~We all thought it would be okay for a couple days anyway, but it didn't make it until Monday... It broke my heart to see my daughter cry so much, so now I always keep a 100ml bottle of Pen. for animals and a hand full of 22ga. and 20ga. syringes on hand.. We call our pets our best friends... And I know if my best friend was seriously hurting, I'd get help one way or the other, even if I had to call 911..

Hope this makes sense and helps...
Well....I'll be!! I thin I see a Green Apple below!!
