Default Don't Active Folks Need A Good Amount of Carbs?

If you are an active person, don't you need a good amount of carbs?

If so, where can those carbs come from?

Don't carbs provide us with most of our energy?

Carbs proteins and fats all can provide energy but complex carbs are the best. Best sources whole grains!

This all depends on your health goals.
Different sources of carbohydrates have different effects on our bodies. You are correct that carbs are a great source of energy, but work in different ways.

Think of carbs in two different ways, Slow carbs and fast carbs.
If your goals are to loose weight you want a slow carb because they enter your body slower, last longer and don't spike your blood sugar. The best choice in this category is from the legume family (beans, lentils, etc.)

The other category is "fast carb." These carbs enter your blood stream faster and tend to spike your blood sugar. Sources of these carbs are pasta, rice, breads (white and whole grain). This can be a good thing for a really active person. Right after a workout is a great time to have a fast carb to replenish your body. This can also work an hour or two before a workout to provide energy. Eating a slower carb or protein would take longer to enter the bloodstream and provide energy.

Most of your carbs should come from vegetables...
Only eat as many carbs that maintain stable weight.

If you are highly active you need more carbs to prevent muscle wasting.
If there is not glucose circulating in the blood the body will start to burn muscle.

glucose mostly comes from carbs.

Arrowwind, what vegetables do you suggest? You would have to eat at least five times as many vegetables as legumes to obtain a decent amount of carbs. Most of my reading indicates that vegetables are great for micro nutrients, but don't provide much in terms of energy and zero essential proteins.

Look at these examples:
Asparagus 5grams of carbs in a cup
Broccoli 3 grams of carbs in one cup
Peas 4.7g in one cup
Spinach 1g in one cup

The alternative :
Lentils 20g of carbs and 10g of proteing in one cup
Black beans 20g of carbs and 9g of protein in one cup

Obtaining carbs from vegetables is a great choice, but just realize that you will have to eat about five times more to obtain the necessary "fuel" for your body. Otherwise you will find yourself feeling fatigued and irritable.

You do need glucose in your blood to fuel your body. I was only talking about the rate some carbohydrates put this into your blood. Afterall, too much glucose is an extremely bad thing leading to obesity, diabetes, etc. This isn't to say that having a bowl of pasta is going to make you obese by any means. But eating large portions of white breads, pastas, fruits and other fast carbs at every meal could give you unintended results.

I think the best possible meal is a lean protein (chicken, fish, etc.), legumes and veggies. If you find yourself slimming or low on energy add a cup of brown rice to the meal.

Very good points. I didn't realize the difference in available carbs was that much. Makes me a little hungry for my alfredo.
