It\'s just another way for the big pharmaceutical companies to line their pockets with our money. I think probably the most important one in the rabies (3 year). Just curious as I guess you give your dog the shots, so that you can cross the border, but it sounds like if you didn\'t have to go to Mexico with your dog that you would probably not give you dog the rabbies shot, even though it\'s the law.

\nI guess my question is that I do go to a few dog messageboards and one thing I guess I wonder is that my vet or any vet I\'ve gone to requires proof of rabies shots, before seeing the dog. I take my dog to the vet once a year for the prescription of heartworm medication and they always need proof of rabies shots. I\'m guessing if you never gave your dog the rabbies shots that you wouldn\'t then be able to get the prescrption?

\nMy dog is only 2 years old and I\'m on the every 3 year rabbies cycle, but when she turns 10 or older, I start to think that the vaccination is probably a higher risk than her getting rabbies, especially since she\'s so old and an inside dog and it appears that the rabbies do last much longer than they indicated.

\nI know Dr. Dodd was one of the people who pushed to allow the exact same vaccination 1 year be allowed for 3 years and now she\'s pushing for them to allow it for 5 years. If all studies show that the vaccination does last years and years, then I can see why a person who has a 10 year old dog not want to give them another vaccination that could cause more harm and be benefical.\r\n

\r\n \r\n Rabies is pretty darn rare. I am not concerned about it. Since bats are the only carriers of note in my state risk is virtually non existant. My dog has no interest in bats... and we rarely see them

\nWe went to the vet last week and they didn\'t say a word about whether he had a rabies vaccine or not.

\nIts all a bunch of hype as far as I can tell.
\nIf you live in an area where rabid woodchucks and squirls are found that might be an indicatior for a true need.

\nAbout 2 people a year get rabies in the US. At the turn of the century about 100. Not worth vaccinating for in my opinion. Probably less now then at the turn of the century because far fewer people hunt.\r\n

\r\n \r\n We are not giving our dogs any more shots they have had their initial shots but that will be it, our last dog who we had done every year because the vet said we should, and we were none the wiser last time, poor thing had a lifetime of allergies and lumps removed where she had vaccinations, these two we have at the moment are fine and have no alleries and no fleas, and I think its because their imune systems haven\'t been compromised with vaccs.

Most vaccinations last a life time, yet we over vaccinate our dogs more than any country in the world.
