I put a spoonful of coconut oil in my morning coffee, and that's one reason why. Here's a couple of older threads:

Coconutketones is Dr Mary Newport's website and her husband has early onset Alzheimer's and this drew her attention to the importance of providing a natural alternative fuel source for the brain.

Axona is a ketone based food for those diagnosed with Alzheimer's but I think it's likely that implementation of a low carb diet earlier than diagnosed onset of dementia would be more beneficial. Prevention being better than slowing progression. The link has a good video explaining the role of ketones in the brain.

UK heatlh food stores charge exorbitantly for organic virgin coconut oil.
So IHERB is probably a cheaper source Cash and Carries or even Asian corner shops serving the Indian/Pakistan/Chinese communities carry NON ORGANIC coconut oil along with palm oil in the Oils section and although these don't have the same coconutty flavour they are much cheaper. Bear in mind some people prefer their fried onions tasting of onion and not coconut flavoured onion although as chief curry maker I usually win on that one.

After you've tried it and decided it's OK (it usually takes a while to acquire a new taste) then Coconoil do a bulk 10KG container of virgin organic that is fine and a fraction of the price of health food shop CO I expect there are bulk providers in the USA. The stability of CO is very good so there is no problem in the UK storing it in a cool place for a couple of years as it remains solid throughout the year. I put my bulk container in the airing cupboard(winter) or the greenhouse (summer) when I need to decant some from the bulk container to the smaller pots I keep in the kitchen.

I haven't yet found a cheap source of MCT OIL in the UK.
If anyone knows of one then PLEASE POST A LINK.
In the mean time I useIHERB offer the cheapest $4 postage to the UK[/url] Use code WAB666 for a $5 introductory discount.
UK readers need to remember customs add 17% to orders above 17 and our post office charge 8 handling fee to collect the tax whatever it amounts to . DHL offer FASTER delivery, are not much more expensive if you take into account the bulk buy discounts on some IHERB deals, and DHL not only offer tracking (so you know when it's left customs) but also charge only 1.25 for handling the tax.

MCT remains liquid at room temperature, It's a concentrated source of Medium Chain Triglyerides so even better at raising ketone burning than CO. It makes a good french dressing and mayonnaise (the CO goes too solid in mayo) and is not so coconutty flavoured.

Some day in the future scientists will discover the reason why coconut oil reverses Alzheimer's when the reason is obvious.

Besides being antibacterial and antiviral, coconut oil is antifungal. This is very important because Alzheimer's is caused by fungus, or more specifically,by the mycotoxin poisons that are excreeted by these one-celled organisms.

Alzheimer's is not a disease, it is a fungal condition. It is a life long battle with many different fungi, in addition to sugar, artificial sweeteners, aluminum, mercury, vaccines, several pesticides, flooring chemicals, and lack of vital nutrients.

You're starting to get my attention - think I just got rid of a mild ringworm infection on my leg with CO.. difficult for me to make this leap to fungus causing a host of other maladies. Can you provide some refs? Tx

I loved this paragraph:

For more information, see Dr. Newport’s website. Sadly, you will not find any information on ketones, or the use of coconut oil or MCT oil, on the Alzheimer’s Association website.

I hate these official sites. I was banned from posting on an emphysema board for posting alternative medicine.

"Approximately 50% of the fatty acids in coconut fat are lauric acid. Lauric acid is a medium chain fatty acid, which has the additional beneficial function of being formed into monolaurin in the human or animal body. Monolaurin is the anti-viral, antibacterial, and antiprotozoal monoglyceride used by the human or animal to destroy lipid coated viruses such as HIV, herpes, cytomegalovirus, influenza, various pathogenic bacteria including listeria monocytogenes and heliobacter pylori, and protozoa such as giardia lamblia. Some studies have also shown some antimicrobial effects of the free lauric acid."

Coconut oil is the healthiest oil on earth, unless it has been hydrogenated.

https://www.alternative-healthzine.com/html/0108_2.html

Lauric acid is a medium chain fatty acid which is abundant in coconut oil, and considered responsible for many of its health benefits. Coconut oil is about 50% lauric acid. The only other abundant source found in nature is in human breast milk. Dr. Jon J. Kabara, PhD and Professor Emeritus of Michigan State University says, "Never before in the history of man is it so important to emphasize the value of Lauric Oils. The medium-chain fats in coconut oil are similar to fats in mother's milk and have similar nutriceutical effects."

Mercola has an interview with Dr Newport and her husband here and some useful advice on Alzhiemer's prevention.

For those who would gag on the idea of consuming a tablespoon of coconut oil there are lots of other ways of using CO.
I add a spoonful to my coffee (bit like adding cream to coffee)
I use it for frying onions/garlic when making curry (or any casserole type dish)
I use it as a general frying oil in place of corn/soy/vegetable/sunflower or the like. I still use a bit of olive oil and I also get MCT oil (this is a concentrated medium chain triglyceride oil made from CO) as this stays liquid at room temperature (CO is always solid in the UK I have to put it in a warm place (airing cupboard) to melt it to get it out of the bulk container. when decanting it into smaller containers.
I still haven't found a cheap UK source of MCT oil so I use IHERB. code WAB666 saves $5 for newbies.
If anyone has any UK sources for MCT please post.

In Mercola's suggestions for Anti Alzheimer's he mentions
Quote:
Avoid anticholinergic drugs. Drugs that block acetylcholine, a nervous system neurotransmitter, have been shown to increase your risk of dementia. These drugs include certain night-time pain relievers, antihistamines, sleep aids, certain antidepressants, medications to control incontinence, and certain narcotic pain relievers.

A recent study found that those who took one drug classified as a 'definite anticholinergics' had a four times higher incidence of cognitive impairment. Regularly taking two of these drugs further increased the risk of cognitive impairment.
I don't think most readers here will be aware that most of us aren't eating sufficient choline anyway so making matters worse by taking an anticholergentic substance is total madness.
If you want to learn more about choline
Chris Masterjohn has been talking about it recently.

If you think Mercola is overhyping the anticholergenic issue Limiting the clinical use of definite anticholinergics may reduce the incidence of cognitive impairment among African Americans.

CONCLUSIONS: Over one in five elderly nursing home residents with dementia used medications with marked anticholinergic activities. The study findings suggest the need to optimize the use of anticholinergic medications in vulnerable patients with dementia given the potentially severe adverse cognitive effects of these agents.

These results suggest that a higher number of psychotropic medications prescribed leads to a tendency for SAA to be positive and that anticholinergic activity accelerates Alzheimer's pathology and decreases cognitive function, especially memory in AD patients. We should more prudently prescribe psychotropic medications to AD patients, because the prescribed psychotropic medications are one of the important causes of decline in cognitive function of AD patients by way of anticholinergic activity.

So if it's not safe to give these drugs to old people Why not give them to the kids as well?

Mindmt,

How did you use Coconut Oil to rid yourself of Ringworm?

My daughter in law has this, and I was going to try a Rife frequency treatment for it, but if you have a better way, I would like to have her try it out. I already have some Coconut Oil she could use.

Thank you.

Dan

I use mostly coconut oil for any frying too - french fries, garlic/onions, eggs - both scrambled & fried.
I've been using Tropical Traditions brand in large containers, for years but am getting low so was glad to
see the Nutiva on VitaCost. T Traditions requires a fee to order from them, so am trying the Nutiva.
I can't handle eating amount just by itself.
