The petitions for secession from the U.S. filed by Texas, Louisiana, and five other states have collected more than 25,000 signatures each, which the White House website says is enough for review and response.
Yeah, but I don't think it would happen... I mean... Could you imagine...
It would be sort of like Jericho.... Where there were 10 presidents... it would be so weird...
Although, having 52 different governments/laws etc wouldn't be so weird I guess.. Europe does it... Some countries in Europe are smaller than a state... So...
Texas has written secession into its constitution, giving it a legal right to secede. This was done when the Republic of Texas nation, gave up its independence.
I don't see how this can be done financially. The main reason that the Republic of Texas failed is due to nearly going bankrupt. Not much has changed. We still get billions of support from the Feds. We would not be able to support our boarder without help from the Feds. Would I have to pay import duties for all the online stuff I buy. After all, my favorite supplement vendors are out of state. I'd have to get a new passport too. We'd need a bigger boarder patrol to keep the Okies (Oklahoma) and the Louisianans out. I definitely don't want Rick Perry to be our president. Where is Jefferson Davis when we need him?

Canada had sort of the same issue a while back.. Quebec wanted to separate, but the terms were they would keep the currency, share the army, keep the same benefits... LOL it was a farce....
I don't think any states will secede, because as you mentioned can't really afford to.
The whole idea of a state petitioning the government for the right to secede is a joke. Haven’t any of these clowns ever bothered to read the Constitution or the Declaration of Independence? Obviously not.
It is all spelled out there on how to do it and asking permission is not part of it.
Just imagine if the original colonies had asked the king of England for the right to start a new country what his response would have been.
These petitions at their very best it might get a few politicians to realize that there is a bit of discontent in the country.
The petition movement for a state to secede from the union appears to be growing despite the efforts to discredit it. Apparently there are now petitions coming in from all states. This is something that is obviously starting to resonate with a large number of people. Now I think we can all agree that the government will in no way grant these requests, but that is irrelevant! However what is happening is like in the movie scene where the newscaster tells his audience “open you windows stick you head our and scream, We are mad as hell and we are not going to take this anymore”. This is what these petitions are telling our politicians however it is being done in a manner that is way more forceful and powerful than anything that has ever been done before. Even the most callous or brain dead politician has got to realize that they got a real problem here and they are going to have to deal with it.
So the more people that sign these petitions the louder the scream and the harder it will be for the politicians to ignore it.
I was listening to an internet radio show yesterday and they went into this issue in detail. It is a three hour show, yeah it is long, but the first two hours are the meat of it and you can fast forward through the first 9 minutes. But once you get into it a bit and the guest starts talking I don’t think you will turn it off.
Texas is a pretty self sufficient state. It has agriculture, oil, its own power grid that can operate independently.
I guess I do not understand how the state could not afford to be independant. Lets just say they could pull this off. Now free from federal taxes, they could raise the state tax to something comparable. I got to believe that would be far more than they would need to operate, given how much is now pissed away at the Federal level.
They would no longer be under the burdon of the National Debt. Actually that could be a big sticking point. Would they have to pay off their share of the national debt?
Ron Paul would have been a good president of Texas, but he will be too old or dead before this ever happens. Maybe Rand?
Here is the status of the petitions. Only Texas has accumulated enough signatures, likely because it has a huge population base. The government must review Texas' petition for they have fulfilled the requirement.
