Default It's a female thing!

My 11 year old granddaughter has started her periods a few months back. According to my daughter, she is having really heavy periods.. To the extent of going through a overnight pad in a four hour period... and its not just once or twice, apparently its been this way since she started, and it goes for a week. The daughter says that apparently granddaughter is so heavy that her face/skin is ghost white as if anemic.... Daughter is also saying that granddaughter is having problems with pms... the grouchy/moodiness, the cramps, the tiredness.. the whole nine yards.....

Now as a mother... my first instinct is to tell my daughter... paybacks are a bi... aint they.. boy was she a difficult daughter!!! But, I feel so sorry for my granddaughter. I know this isnt the way things should be.... I suggested starting a magnesium/cal supplement for the moodiness... and suggested starting a b complex.. and upping foods high in iron....... If she ends up going to the doctors over this, they will put her on birth control pills to regulate her, and thats not something we want to do at all!!! What else can we do????

Hi, just me,
I wonder if she would like to try some salvia - Clary Sage. Being so far away, I have no idea if it is the right approach for her. Have a look at

I found this interesting snippet about coriander seeds, which might help, too.

Some other Home Remedies for Menorrhagia
  • Asoka-aristha (wine prepared from Asoka) is the drug of choice in menorrhagia. Six teaspoonfuls (30 ml) of the formulation are given thrice a day with water. Asoka has haemostatic activity.
  • Tea made up of Coriander seeds are highly beneficial in the treatment of excessive menstruation. Six grams of these seeds should be boiled in half a litre of water. It should be taken off the fire when only half the water remains. Sugar can be added to it for taste. It should be sipped like tea while its still warm.
  • Cinnamon has been used historically for the treatment of various menstrual disorders, including heavy menstruation. It can be taken in raw form or powdered form, once or twice a day. It can also be taken in form of tea, boiled with water. Some other Home Remedies for Menorrhagia

Hopefully my male input might help here. I know this is a sensitive female issue.

She might be becoming a little Anemic.

Don't forget Women Mensturate Iron, and although she probably wouldn't need the approximate 15mg a day that adults do, she may be Menstruating quite a lot, and therefore not having enough in her system that she needs.

Things like Amino Acids, Vit C and Capsicum are all Iron Boosters, that I know of, so if it is Iron related, you could possibly add a bit of Capsicum to one or two meals, or try Vit C supplementing as a countermeasure and see if that helps.

Possibly may be as well to get her seen by a doc. If she's a little Iron low, and it's affecting things like Haemaglobin Levels, and possibly Blood Pressure, a brief checkup to rule it out might he in order, if dietry Iron Boosting or mild increases in Iron based foods like Flesh sources, Whole-grains etc etc, don't seem to be having a strong enough effect.

Thanks Boss for the input... we will take any info offered at this point.... Both granddaughters have always been anemic... one of them, (Im pretty sure it was this one) was given a prescription iron pill, but it constipated the poor child so bad, that she totally refused to take it.... mom just sort of let it go from there... So, yeah, maybe it would be a good idea to have her checked out...
