Unhappy Vitamin C OVERDOSE :/

I'm wondering if anyone could help me out? I felt a cold coming on, so I got my jar of vitamin c chewable tablets out. I have a busy week coming on and can't be sick so I took 15 tablets. Each one has 200mg of absorbic acid. I now have stomach cramps and severe diarrhea; been to the toilet 5 times in half and hour. Is this bad? What should I do, is it dangerous? Should I call a doctor or let it pass? My stomach is in a lot of pain. Thanks for your help/

No you are not in danger. It will pass soon.

What you did was reach your bowel tolerance... which means that you received more than enough vitamin c for a time..

Seems you took 4 grams (4,000 mg) to reach your bowel tolerance.. thats pretty good, You must be fairly young. As soon as the diarrhea lets up take some more but only 1,000 mg. If you tolerate that oK take another 1,000 in two hours. if you don't tolerate it well wait till the runs pass and only take 400mg. You want to take the maximum dosage possible without getting the runs... this is called attaining your bowel tolerance. This is the level of vitamin c needed to be fully theraputic... so don't worry. You will be fine. Follow my instructions and you will be well for your meeting.

The pain is merely gas.

you can learn more about this at www.vitamincfoundation.org type in bowel tolerance in their search bar.

3,000 mg really isn't much at all. I'm surprised that you have diarrhea with that amount. I'm wondering what the other ingredients are in your chewables, maybe that's the problem.

The half life of vitamin C once it's absorbed into the body is measured in minutes.
It follows the best way to take vitamin C if you want to raise plasma levels and keep them raised is in smaller amounts THROUGH the day. You could use a Time Release or SLOW release form if you prefer.
example Doctor's Best, PureWay-C, Sustained Release Vit.C, 60 Tablets

Otherwise remember the Home made liposomal vitamin c recipe

The vitamin c foundation good source of vit c information. If you look at the amounts some people take you'd see why the amount taken in this instance is somewhat trivial.

Don't forget that for every 10nm/l 4ng/ml you raise your vitamin d status you reduce the incidence of seasonal infections 7% Therefore raising your vitamin d status approx 100mnol/l 40ng/ml reduces infection rate 70%.
5000iu/daily vitamin D3
Country Life, Vitamin D3, 5,000 IU, 200 Softgels $7.92 (5.16) is probably the cheapest most effective way to reduce winter colds and flu.
USA/Canadian readers may find cheaper google/amazon search depending on shipping and discounts available. I use IHERB cause they ship cheapest to UK. code WAB666 saves $5 initially.

That is once your body reaches saturation, your body will retain a level of Vit C for a very long time (2.5 months) but to have higher levels, you need it daily. Also, at low doses the body absorbs over 90 percent of the vitamin C and at high doses 20 percent. Yes, take it morre than once a day or get a timed release version.

I would like to see some evidence for this.

It is not mentioned at the vitamin c foundation and time release versions are not recommended.

People who use vitamin c to get past acute illness should have an idea of what their bowel tolerance is.

for me its about 6 grams. For my husband about 15 grams. For one of my son's its about 3 grams. This way if illness does come you know how to dose yourself. The dose generally can be repeated every two hours. In severe illness the dose may be repeated in one hour without diarrhea. There are people who have bowel tolerance as high as 25 or 30 grams.

With bowel tolerance the body will absorb all it can and when it can no more the body reacts by flooding the bowel with water and this causes the diarrhea. Everyone's bowel tolerance is different. Bowel tolerance does not reflect the capacity for the total body to cope with vitamin c, it only reflects the bowels capacity to cope with it. Smokers need way high levels generally to get to bowel tolerance thats why my husband is a 15.
Severe illness also mandates very high levels and the sicker you are the more you can take before reaching bowel tolerance (diarrhea)

All this measurement is irrelevant if you are taking it by IV for the body in total can handle huge amounts of C. Some doctors give 50 or 100 or 150 grams by IV.

In Lipsomal Vitamin c, the ascorbic acid is protected by liposomes around the C so the vitamin c never actually comes in contact with the lining of the intestines or bowel. It goes directly into the blood encapsulated in the liposmes. It is the most effecient method to take vitamin c orally during an illness, no matter how severe that illness may be, and it fully eliminates the need to take C by IV.

Although many state that bioflavinoids make the c more effective, ALL the studies done by Linus Pauling and those who followed him did not use bioflavinoids. They used pure ascorbic acid.

Check the ingredients list on the jar label.

Since most chewable vitamin C pills contain a sweetener, I would be willing to bet sucralose and/or aspartame is on the list. These are neurotoxins and should never be allowed in the body.

Always check the ingredient list and look up what you don't understand.

Don't assume the government is looking out for your health, they aren't.

I've been to the Linus Pauling site and have seen their study done on rats using ascorbic acid vs ascorbic acid with quercetin, and they found little evidence that the quercetin made the ascorbic acid work better, however, they used very small amounts of quercetin, and that is the difference.

Most commercial vitamin C products contain only a few milligrams of bioflavonoids and that just isn't enough. I would suggest a 50% mix. That is, for every 1000mg of C, you should take 500 mg of quercetin, not 2.5mg as used by most manufacturers.

It comes down to a question of logic. Ascorbic acid is synthetic, thus does not contain rutin, ascorbinogen, and other nutrients, as would be present in an orange or ascerola berry for example, working in a synergistic manner.

And taking straight ascorbic acid in large amounts, like Linus Pauling did, would cause some stomach issues since the ascorbic acid would react with the hydrochloric acid in the stomach.

I would suggest taking ascorbic acid with quercetin so you get the complete C. That way, your body doesn't have to "steal" the other nutrients from within, and if absorbtion is a problem, its just a matter of taking in more.
