http://content.herbalgram.org/iherb/herbclip/review.asp?i=45074The authors conclude that EGb 761 supplementation inhibited the process of atherosclerosis in blood from people with severe cardiovascular disease. EGb 761 appeared to stimulate the body's antioxidant enzymes and reduce the risk factors for oxidized LDL and lipoprotein(a) formation.
The authors emphasize that this was a small exploratory study and that results warrant further investigation in larger numbers of subjects.
The inhibition of atherosclerosis observed in this study is consistent with previous studies showing antioxidant and vasodilating properties of EGb 761. While EGb 761 reduced nanoplaque formation in a laboratory model, additional studies are needed to demonstrate the effects of ginkgo on plaque formation in human arteries.
