Default How Dairy Maligns Prostates

How Dairy Maligns Prostates

A new study in the International Journal of Cancer highlights the link between dairy consumption and prostate cancer. Researchers examined dairy and calcium intake in 29,133 men in the Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta-Carotene Cancer Prevention Study, which is out of Finland. As consumption of dairy products increased OR as overall dietary calcium intake increased, the risk for prostate cancer increased concomitantly. Men who consumed the most dietary calcium (greater than 2,000 mg per day) had a 63 percent greater risk of prostate cancer, compared with those getting less than 1,000 mg per day.

Several previous studies have linked dairy products with prostate cancer. This new study supports the thinking that a principal reason for the link may be dairy calcium. Excess dietary calcium inhibits the activation of vitamin D in the body, and vitamin D is essential for prostate health. Even though milk products in the U.S. are fortified with vitamin D, their large calcium load tends to block vitamin D activation in the body.

In order to make it active, or you might say "hot," the body has to tweak it chemically twice: once in the kidneys and once in the liver. That is how the cholecalciferol from sunning gets converted into 1,25 Vitamin D, which is the active vitamin. This is an ingenius system because, as I said, active Vitamin D is a "hot" molecule, meaning that it's very potent, and too much can be harmful. To prevent that harm, the body only activates a little at a time according to its needs. What determines that activation more than anything else is the amount of calcium coming in. Calcium plethora puts the breaks on Vitamin D activation, and calcium scarcity revs up the activation. Cow's milk, which has enough calcium to support the rapid skeletal growth of a bovine calf, has more calcium than a human being requires at any time in life. Remember that calcium is a white mineral, so when you look at cow's milk, you're seeing the calcium. All that calcium shuts down Vitamin D activation, and it is active Vitamin D that prevents errant cellular divisions in the prostate. Active Vitamin D is what tells abnormal prostatic cells to kill themselves instead of multiplying. Storage Vitamin D has practically no effect that way and no potency at all. And there is also evidence that dairy calcium is involved in atherosclerosis as well. When we speak of arteries becoming "hardened," what do you think they become hardened with? Calcium, of course. So stay away from dairy. You don't need it, and you're better off without it.
