\nOBJECTIVE: We examined associations between vitamin C intake and serum uric acid in men in a population-based study.
\n
\nMETHODS: We included 1387 men without hypertension and with body mass index (BMI) < 30 kg/m(2) in the Health Professional Follow-up Study. Dietary intake was assessed with a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire validated for use in this population. Serum uric acid concentrations were measured.
\n
\nRESULTS: Greater intakes of total vitamin C were significantly associated with lower serum uric acid concentrations, after adjustment for smoking, BMI, ethnicity, blood pressure, presence of gout, use of aspirin, and intake of energy, alcohol, dairy protein, fructose, meat, seafood and coffee.
\n
\nAn inverse dose-response association was observed through vitamin C intake of 400-500 mg/day, and then reached a plateau. Adjusted mean uric acid concentrations across total vitamin C intake categories (< 90, 90-249, 250-499, 500-999, or >/= 1000 mg/day) were 6.4, 6.1, 6.0, 5.7, and 5.7 mg/dl, respectively (p for trend < 0.001).
\n
\nGreater vitamin C intake was associated with lower prevalence of hyperuricemia (serum uric acid > 6 mg/dl). Multivariate odds ratios for hyperuricemia across total vitamin C intake categories were 1 (reference), 0.58, 0.57, 0.38, and 0.34 (95% CI 0.20-0.58; P for trend < 0.001).
\n
\nWhen we used dietary data, which were assessed 4-8 years before blood collection, as predictors, we observed similar inverse associations between vitamin C intake and uric acid.

\nCONCLUSION: These population-based data indicate that vitamin C intake in men is inversely associated with serum uric acid concentrations. These findings support a potential role of vitamin C in the prevention of hyperuricemia and gout.\r\n \r\n

\r\n \r\n The only problem I could forsee Harry with Dairy in relation to Gout, is that should any Saturates in Dairy, have their Nitrogen content converted to Uric Acid, as well as Nitrogen in the Protein content, that might not be too beneficial.

\nIt might then be more prudent to switch to possibly something like Almonds for example instead, for the Unsaturates, and to replace the Dairy Calcium, and then try to acquire any lost Vit D from dairy, via other means, possibly supplemental.\r\n

\r\n \r\n With gout you could try pantothenic acid. Pantothenic acid will break down uric acid in the blood. If you do this you need to add at least 400mg of magnesium, magnesuium citrate. and B6 at least 100mg. You must do this also.

\nYou can use very high doses of pantothenic acid. Start with 500mg three times a day. Then in 5 days increase to 1000mg three times a day and after 5 days then retest the uric acid blood level. But if they have gout or goutly arthritis where they just feel generally achy you will know that the uric acid levels are coming down because they will feel better. But you have to take the magnesium and B 6 also.

\nOn rare occasions you might have to go up to 2500mg three times a day then retest after 5 days. Pantothenic acid is not toxic and you can not overdose. On other rare occasions 3,000 mg three times a day.

If the product is being touted in any way, as something that makes water change colour with a reaction to toxins, but the Water could change colour without human toxin interaction, how can anyone know if they use it on themselves, if the discoloured water would have any toxins in it at all, if the process could occur without human interaction?

The water didn\'t change color for me one iota. The attendant said that they rarely get people in who\'s water doesn\'t change color.

No more gout. i also take celery seed extract in capsules, cherry juice estract in capsules or drink cherry juice (without sugar, organic best). I have heard about taking collodial silver as well. I went 2 years gout free. Of course, diet is vital..no spinach, no mushroms, etc.
\nLately, I have been taking MMS. when i got to 15 drops, whether coincedence or not, i got gouty foot beginning. I stopped taking MMS and began my usual regime with the celery and cherry, etc. Now it is clearing after ONE day. So, i am not sure i will return to MMS. Anyone else with experience with gout and MMS, please write!

Parvatidevi, this makes me wonder if you were having a healing crisis brought on my the MMS. Sometimes, in any disease really, the symptoms can get worse for hours to a couple of days as the body cleans house. If it were me I would have kept up for another day with the MMS and just kept up with the celery and cherry stuff...and go back and find my post about pantothenic acid supplements.

I recall that in the book, "Dr. Frank\'s No-Aging Diet" by Benjamin S. Frank, which stressed high RNA foods to slow down the aging process and reverse some of its effects (eliminate wrinkles and regrow and thicken hair), sardines contained some of the highest levels of RNA, and the smaller the sardines, the higher the levels. However, one of the possible adverse side effects was gout!

The cautionary note really needs a little expansion. Though high purine foods can cause a slight increase in blood uric acid, most purines come from the meat that we are all comprised of. That is why the risk of gout increases with increased weight. It also accounts for the problems with gout attacks during rapid weight loss or overexertion - uric acid rises as purines in our own body tissue breakdown to uric acid. However, weight is often not the issue. Genetic factors and kidney problems are extremely common causes of gout, as are medications for other conditions, especially diuretics.

In the long term, if uric acid is not kept below 6mg/dL, then gout attacks will increase in frequency and intensity. That is why the risk of gout increases with increased weight. It also accounts for the problems with gout attacks during rapid weight loss or overexertion - uric acid rises as purines in our own body tissue breakdown to uric acid. However, weight is often not the issue. Genetic factors and kidney problems are extremely common causes of gout, as are medications for other conditions, especially diuretics.

\r\nIt is often difficult to determine the exact cause of gout, though it is always the result of excess uric acid (which has absolutely nothing to do with fungus!). So, to manage gout, we have to manage uric acid.

Apart from the correct claim that "one should strive for a 70% Alkaline to a 30% Acidic balance", the explanation of alkalizing through diet is one of the worst I have seen, with meaningless pH values for foods. It promotes the obsessions I see everyday in my gout forum - "is food x OK for gout", "will food y give me gout" etc, etc. Fortunately, there is an excellent resource for information about alkalizing foods - phbalance.wikispaces.com.
\nRemember though, avoid food obsession down this track. All you are trying to do is alkalize the urine, so get some pH strips. You are seeking a pH reading for urine of 7.5 more or less consistently. If you cannot achieve that, do not blame the occasional cup of tea, or bowl of pasta. Simply list all your foods and give them a PRAL or NEAP analysis - you\'ll soon find some easy-to-make adjustments, rather than worrying about the occasional harmless pleasure.
\n
\nThe next page you mention "Uric Acid - Gout Stages" is a reasonably good explanation of gout process. It is commendable for it\'s conclusion emphasizing the need to "maintain a normal level of uric acid in the blood". Unfortunately, it does not tell you what that level is. Nor does it make clear that if you fail to achieve that level, you will continue to slowly build uric acid crystals in the body. You might postpone the really crippling attacks for twenty years or so, but you will then be much less able to cope with them. If you are a gout sufferer, you must keep uric acid levels below 6mg/dL.

\nThe Question and Answer page deserves an award in the Internet Myth and Half-Baked Truth awards, if ever such a thing should exist. There are so many unsubstantiated claims, I could go on forever, but "Allopurinol eventually can cause liver damage" stands out as the most ridiculous. The only good part of the page is that it lists the ingredients. I suggest that if the garlic and turmeric are applied to a daily vegetable curry, along with their daily water recommendation (or slightly more), then the results will be indistinguishable from GC.
\n
\nFinally, we come to Testimonials, and the Gout Crime Of The Century - "normal" uric acid levels. Lab tests consider uric acid in the 2.4 – 8.2 mg/dL range to be "normal". The saturation point of uric acid at normal blood temperature is 6.8mg/dL. For anyone who has had gout, anything above 6 is a warning, and anything above 7 is danger level. The gap is simply statistics - the normal range is an average of the entire population, including those with gout. Anyone taking a blood test for uric acid MUST get the numbers. Values above 6 may not be proof that you have gout, but they are a strong indication that you will get it in future. If you have had gout, then simply keep that uric acid level number below 6.
\n
\nNow a lot of this sounds like I\'m having a go at GC. That isn\'t my intention, though I am irate at the pseudo-science approach to marketing. That product, and many similar ones, may well bring relief to gout sufferers. What concerns me is that by taking products which mask the symptoms, gout sufferers are failing to tackle (or even recognize) the elevated uric acid. Take them by all means, but do not avoid regular uric acid tests - and make sure you get the numbers.\r\n

\r\nWith gout you could try pantothenic acid. Pantothenic acid will break down uric acid in the blood. If you do this you need to add at least 400mg of magnesium, magnesuium citrate. and B6 at least 100mg. You must do this also.
\r\n
\r\nYou can use very high doses of pantothenic acid. Start with 500mg three times a day. Then in 5 days increase to 1000mg three times a day and after 5 days then retest the uric acid blood level. But if they have gout or goutly arthritis where they just feel generally achy you will know that the uric acid levels are coming down because they will feel better. But you have to take the magnesium and B 6 also.

\r\nOn rare occasions you might have to go up to 2500mg three times a day then retest after 5 days. Pantothenic acid is not toxic and you can not overdose. On other rare occasions 3,000 mg three times a day.

She mentioned above 6 as high for gout sufferers. She prescribed allopurinol. The pills made me light-headed and i had to discontinue using them. I also reasoned that my uric acid levels were low and i didn\'t need a drug to lower them further so i stopped taking the drug. Instead, i reduced my stress and intake of meats and make sure to drink lots of water and eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Seems to be working.\r\n

\nThe attack came without warning, in the middle of the night while I was asleep. It left a pain the intensity of which I hadn’t experienced since having some teeth removed with pliers when I was a child. The area of this excruating ache centered on the joints in my right big toe and made the spot so sensitive even a sheet slithering across it engendered a blood- curdling scream.

\nThat morning, I somehow managed to hobble to a local podiatrist and told him my amateur diagnosis was that I had a stress fracture. Foot doctor scanned the surface of my toe, noticed that it was red, shiny and felt hot to the touch. “No doubt,” he said. “You have gout.”
\n
\nGout? Wait a minute, I thought. Isn’t gout a member of that ancient malady pantheon right up there with rickets and scurvy, ailments people just don’t get anymore? Apparently not. According to the Mayo Clinic, more than 2 million people are afflicted with this form of arthritis and 95% of those are men over 30. I had been unceremoniously welcomed to this dubious club.

\nRoot Causes of Intense Pain
\nHundreds of years ago, gout was called “the disease of kings” because it was associated with wealthy men who overindulged in rich food and drink. Organ meats, shellfish, scallops, peas and beans, and liquids such as beer and wine contain purines. When the body breaks down purines it produces a lot of uric acid in the blood, the main culprit in what causes gout.
\n
\nUric acid isn’t harmful. In fact, it’s a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from damage. It’s just that when uric acid levels rise too high, sharp, needle-like, monosodium urate crystals can form in connective tissue, in the joint space between two bones, or in both. (Besides the big toe, ankles, knees, hands or wrists can also be affected.) While these crystals are very pretty under a microscope, the way they inflame your joints isn’t too attractive. (A condition called pseudogout is sometimes confused with gout because it produces similar symptoms of inflammation, but the crystals are made up of calcium phosphate, not uric acid.)
\n
\nGout can also be caused by obesity, high alcohol intake and high blood pressure, and tends to run in families. I had never heard any quaint family histories involving gout so I was more than a tad skeptical about having the problem.
\n
\nAnd I turned out to be right. My family doctor took a blood test and determined that my uric acid level wasn’t high enough to indicate a gout attack. Foot doctor took another x-ray and confirmed that his initial diagnosis was off, that I was developing a kind of osteo-arthritis. However, by the time I received this new assessment, I’d done enough research on gout to, say, write a magazine article.

\nHow To Treat Gout
\nWhen something so profoundly painful strikes, there is little alternative than to take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories to relieve the immediate pain. Some people may have to embark on a long diet of medicines such as allopurinol or probenecid to treat hyperuricemia and reduce the frequency of gout attacks. But a healthy diet and regular exercise can also be helpful in diminishing gout episodes and minimizing their pain.

Default Gout treatments.

I have a friend who is suffering from gout. He takes a prescribed medication (don't know what - he is in Denmark) with little effect.
All I can remember about gout is that it's good to eat cherries. Does anyone remember anything more specific. What type of cherry? Does it matter?
how much.
What other natural gout treatments are there?
