Anyone know how to get the wax off apples and wash fruit properly? I'd prefer to not have to buy a product for it.

A lot of people use lemon juice mixed with water. I just use filtered water and rub the fruit/veggie with my fingers, then dry with a paper towel. Here's a recipe that uses lemon and vinegar.

I like using white vinegar and water. You can mix up a batch in a spray bottle and
keep it on the counter or in a nearby cabinet.
The same is true of grocery waxy cucumbers.

Do you think that the wax holds the pesticides on there?

Yes, the wax would be over the pesticides. Some folks also use a scrub brush to wash their fruits.
