Thumbs down Monosodium Glutamate ( MSG )

Just noticed some MSG in some salad dressing we were eating

Quote:
The most prevalent preservative in the US is called Monosodium Glutamate. MSG, for short, is a food preservative that is added to most processed foods as a flavor enhancer. After reading hundreds of pages of research on MSG, I decided to go take a look at what foods we have in the kitchen that contain MSG or one of its code names. I was completely shocked. Everything in my cupboards, and 90% of the food in my refrigerator listed MSG as an ingredient.

MSG was deemed safe by the FDA in 1958 and by 1969 scientists injecting into laboratory rats were recording data stating that it cause brain lesions, and since then it has been linked to several different health issues for Americans. Yet somehow this is still one of the primary ingredients in the foods we eat today.

Why? Well, for the most part it is because Americans indulge in high levels of food preservation based on the market saturation of MSG heavy products available in stores nationwide.
The difference is that foods we stock up on, in past generations were purchased on an as-needed basis. There were no packaged foods in cupboards for months or even years prior to the 70s dinner was prepared fresh and dinnertime was a scheduled time so that everyone could eat while it was still that way. Many experts have reported that there is a link between food's evolution towards 'convenience' and America's evolution towards 'immediacy' or perpetual 'availability'.

To take a look at the MSG content in your cupboards and refrigerator, take a look at the lists in this link and ask yourself if it is good for your family to be ingesting such harmful chemicals. Also, take a look at the restaurants that your family regularly visits to see which ones are using MSG permeated product.

In order to avoid all of the possible side effects of sensitivity to ingesting high levels of MSG and MSG related chemicals, do your family (and yourself) a favor and try to make more time to prepare fresh vegetables instead of canned in your meals. Steer clear of packaged foods and freezer meals opting instead for meals that can be prepared without the use of a microwave or simply heating up the ingredients.

Because all of the side effects of MSG intake are not known, it is important to watch out for overindulgence of these chemicals. Children especially are impacted at an early age because of time constraints to prepare meals. As Americans become busier, the foods we eat become more preservative heavy, and we lose the nutrients that our bodies need daily.

I have thought for YEARS that MSM was banned in the US, which is why I always wondered why it wasn't banned in the U.K.

It is long term lethal, causing all sorts of side effects which sends us to orthodox doctors, who put us on medication which cause more side effects and so the story does on. My Father died as a direct result of prescribed medication and in the last 35 years I have only gone down the natural road, and had amazing results.

Hubby and I watched a documentary last night about MSG and Aspartame and similar sweeteners........producing masses of different illnesses.

I check every label, and will not buy anything with dodgy substances....someone followed me round a supermarket once and invited me to a discussion Forum with suppliers because I seemed to "care" about what I was buying!! ...absolutely!!

Onwards and upwards!!!

You're right on Jualsy! I care too, but I get lazy when it comes to reading labels at the store. Got to make sure I have the ol' reading glasses with me, and pay more attention to the foods and supplements I buy for myself and my husband.

The free glutamic acid is the problem- becomes neurotoxic because of rapid absorption. But there are many forms- hydrolized yeast extract, even Natural Flavoring label is allowed. Depends on concentration. Aspartame is another to avoid. Aspartic acid not good for the brain.

Cool MSG

I use only olive oil and some sort of vinegar for salad dressings. I do love
blue cheese so get it on the store's salad bar along w/fresh pineapple, and
some other stuff I don't want to buy in bulk form. Sometimes I mash raspberries
or blackberries and add it to the vinegar and XXVOO to keep it from getting
boring.
