Default Green Tea - A Scientific Review

This is an excellent review of the many health benefits of green tea. Through science, we're discovering new applications for this powerful beverage.

Quote:
Pepper increases EGCG availability

An animal study suggests that consuming the spice, black pepper, when drinking green tea can significantly increase the amount of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) absorbed. In this study, rats and mice given green tea along with piperine (a bioactive component in black pepper) absorbed 130% more EGCG than control animals receiving EGCG alone.

In this study, piperine was found to inhibit the glucuronidation of EGCG in the intestines. Glucuronidation is a chemical pathway that serves as one of the major ways our bodies convert drugs, steroids, and many other substances into metabolites that can then be excreted into the urine or bile.

By inhibiting EGCG's glucuronidation, piperine allowed more of this catechin to be absorbed and utilized. So, next time you have a cup of green tea along with a meal, be sure to spice up your soup, salad and/or entre with a little freshly ground black pepper.

Harry.. how funny. I just finished eating some sauteed chopped celery that I usually sauteed with a little olive oil, a lot of pepper, and sometimes some garlic powder, and basil..

and afterward, I made a little drink that I find refreshing. I put together a couple of ice cubes, 1 scoop of the whey protein powder you recommended (and this is optional - probably not necessary for the drink), add 1/4 to 1/2 tsp of macha (green tea powder), add some milk (about 1/2 cup), blend with my hand blender and pour. It is quite good - if you like the taste of green tea. Like a cold green tea latte? LOL... actually, more like green tea ice cream (which I've tried in Japanese restaurants.. delicious!).

I used 1 tsp macha powder.. and even though I liked the richer taste.. it made me flush - feel a little weird - for a bit. I'd say too much caffeine, except caffeine doesn't usually bother me at all. so, I don't know. but, I use 1/2 tsp now.

I wonder if green tea would go good with any frozen fruits? I will have to look to see if there are any recipes..

anyway, I'm sipping my green tea drink after my celery and pepper, and I see this. hmmm... maybe this is why I thought that green tea drink would taste so good after the celery and pepper..

ST,

There's a very popular chain of kinda/sorta frozen yogurt joints around here called Pink Berry. They offer their variety of green tea frozen yogurt, which they often top with berries or blend (with berries) into a smoothie.
