Default Magnesium could reduce osteoporosis risk

Increasing magnesium intake could increase bone density in the elderly and reduce the risk of osteoporosis, suggests a large American study.

"Higher Mg intake through diet and supplements was positively associated with total-body [bone mineral density] BMD in older white men and women. For every 100 mg per day increase in Mg, there was an approximate 2 per cent increase in whole-body BMD," said Kathryn Ryder and colleagues.

Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mass, which leads to an increase risk of fractures, especially the hips, spine and wrists. An estimated 10 million people suffer from osteoporosis in the US alone, while another 34m are believed to have low bone mass, which puts them at risk of developing the disease.

Just be sure to use magnesium and calcium in the citrate form. I had severe osteoporois, but because I had low stomach acid, my body did not absorb the oxide forms. You might need to supplement with stomach acid and pepsin anyway.

Osteoporosis is a condition in which the normal amount of bone mass has decreased.
People with osteoporosis have brittle bones, which increases the risk of bone fracture, particularly in the hip, spine, and wrist. Osteoporosis is most common in postmenopausal Asian and Caucasian women.

Calcium together with Phosphorus and Magnesium promotes strong bones. Supplementation of Boron may reduce calcium loss in people who are not getting enough in their diets. Vitamin D promotes normal skeletal formation by stimulating calcium and phosphorus absorption, and plays a key role in their metabolism. Omega - 3 Fatty Acids are known to support heart, circulatory and metabolic health and may also help support joint health. Zinc and Copper are essential minerals that are components of enzymes needed to repair wounds and protect against free radicals. Lactobacillus Acidophilus encourages more efficient digestion and improves nutrient absorption.

If you are concerned or unsure about your symptoms, please contact your healthcare provider for professional medical advice.

"Magnesium, zinc and copper status in osteoporotic, osteopenic and normal post-menopausal women," Mutlu M, Argun M, et al, J Int Med Res, 2007; 35(5): 692-5.

(Address: Department of Orthopaedics, Medical Faculty, Erciyes University, Kayseri, Turkey. E-mail: [email protected] ).

Summary: In a study involving postmenopausal women with osteoporosis (n=40), osteopenia (n=40), or normal bone mineral density (n=40), results indicate significantly lower serum magnesium and zinc status in osteoporotic women, compared to osteopenic and normal women.

Serum concentrations of magnesium, zinc and copper were measured in the participants. Mean concentrations of magnesium and zinc were significantly lower in osteoporotic women than in both osteopenic and normal women.

Additionally, mean concentrations of magnesium and zinc were significantly lower in osteopenic women than in normal women. However, no significant differences in mean concentrations of serum copper were observed between the three groups.

Thus, the authors of this study conclude, "The clinical significance of these changes needs further elucidation, but trace element supplementation, especially with magnesium and zinc and perhaps copper, may have beneficial effects on bone density."
