Summary: In a study involving 5 schizophrenia patients receiving treatment with atypical antipsychotic drugs (AAPDs), results indicate that supplementation with alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) may ameliorate AAPD-induced weight gain. The patients received oral supplementation with 1,200 mg/day ALA for a period of 12 weeks.
A significant reduction in body mass index was observed at intervention end, compared with baseline. Additionally, a significant reduction in total cholesterol levels and a weak trend toward the reduction in insulin resistance was also found. Three of the 5 patients reported having increased energy.
Thus, the authors of this study conclude, "These preliminary data suggest the possibility that ALA can ameliorate the adverse metabolic effects induced by AAPDs. To confirm the benefits of ALA, more extended study is warranted."
