Default Clinical Depression

An old friend just informed us that her youngest
son (30 something) has been diagnosed with
clinical depression and is now taking psyco drugs.

We've known him since he was a baby and I know
his diet stinks. The typical SAD diet. Loads of junk
foods, fast foods etc.

I wonder if anyone can speak to dietary supplements
for this condition. What's missing? What's being
overloaded?

I'll see him again this holiday weekend and I'll try
to determine his current eating habits.

Thx,

H

I think everyone's different but generally more protein, less sugar and carbs could help.

I had good results with L-Phenylalanine for mild stress (work)-related depression. Also, B vitamins are essential

In that age range, check alcohol use; even casual but regular use can result in depressive symptoms (it also depletes B vitamins).

Most important: See what psychological/emotional difficulties there are, and how severe. How is sleep and fatigue. Even seemingly mild chronic fatigue/sleeplessness can result in depression.

Contrary to what some Psychiatrists practice, pharmacotherapy for depression is NOT a good long term solution (but can help short term in severe cases).

You'll find LOTS of good information there.

We saw alot of change in Dad, when we put him on the rice bran oil... (imagine a whole new forum to teach about rice bran oil~~Rosie and Neal are gonna be busy!!!!!) We also added b vitamins, switched between selenium and lithium (one month on one 2nd month on the other) We have also found that once we got his blood sugar levels in appropriate levels that seemed to help.... More exercise.... I have read some stuff lately suggesting that being dehydrated will cause depression. Lots of fresh clean sunshine will help.... But its a matter of getting him to try some of these simple tricks..... I would think he would have to be willing to make changes and keep trying to get his life back, in order for anything to work at all..... Also you might want to suggest using EFT (gee something else for this new forum) but I dont remember the link~ does any one else happen to have it?

The Post recently spoke with Dr. Andrew Stoll to learn more about the therapeutic potential of omega-3 fatty acids in treating bipolar disorder, as well as other psychiatric conditions. [...]

Q: Are you currently enrolling patients interested in your trials?

A: Yes. I would love to enroll more patients. If readers are interested, the recruitment line is 617-855-2614 for our research studies on bipolar disorder, unipolar depression, and autism.
Over 20,000 clinical studies have been done on Omega-3 EFA's effect on a wide range of health issues, including bipolar and autism. I wonder why Andrew Stoll seeks to enroll people in further studies since a monstrous amount of work has already been done. Oh, maybe it has something to do with the Omega-Bright supplements that he sells. He should first possibly learn how to use the search feature at www.PubMed.com

THANKS to all contributors on this subject!

I have summarized the inputs, printed them out,
and intend to sit down and discuss them with Jon.

BTW, he is back at work today, (4/17/06) and seems
to be OK on meds.

He is not a relative, but is close enough to our family
that we consider him "one of us"

I'll keep you advised.

Default I speak from personal experience

I speak from personal experience.

My nephew was bi polar... Notice I said was.. he was on lithium. Notice I said was. He was on several others that the 'wonderful and so caring doctors" put him on. Notice I said 'was'.

He blew his face off.

What a waste. What a crime. What he went thru in his mind was.. pure horror.

My quest, that day on, has been to get children off of retalin, (which he was on first), and get them off the welbutrins, aderols, prozac's, zolofs, etc.. etc.. etc..

All the ads make it seem so 'Natural' for someone to take that little pill and all their cares an woe's will just .. disapear. Tiny little pill, glass of water and life will be so good and grand and full of fun and frollic..

Lies, lies and more lies. My nephew would still be alive, but his mother asked all of his doctors if he could take suppliments. They all told her no. Waste of time.. would do him no good. Nuttin good would come of it.

Well, it was a good thing she listened to them huh? He's dead, she is a basket case, (now on most of the same drugs he was on) and the doctors are goin on vacations from all the money they made off of our family.

I know peopel that have been on those drugs for 25 years.. livin the life of a zombie.. after just two months of our supliments,, living a normal and drug free life. I know children, on Retalin, (which is not approved for children.. only Prozac is approved for children).. now, after two months.. off of Retalin. Adults that were on zolof, prozac, welbutrin, aderol, etc..etc.. after two months.. completely off of the drugs.

You can say what you want.. Yes we are all different.. Yes we all have differfent results.. but these people.. all have same results... off their mind altering drugs and on the products.

I do know, I've had a very hard time convincin people to 'want' to make the switch. Friends, family memebers.. don't want to give up their precious prozac or zolof of etc... and worse yet.. their friends and family members dont' want em off of it cause they remember the way they were before they started on the drugs.

But I am here to tell you, as I leave and breath, if someone wants off of those drugs, those cocktails of drugs, I beleive with all my heart an sole that if they really want to get off of em.. can.

I've seen it way too many times.. One person had tried 4 times to commit suicide. was committed.. His parents asked me to talk with him and them. I did. He said he was so mad at the doctors for giving him the drugs that made him feel this way.. He wanted it all to end.. He hated that feeling. I made a deal with him, if he would just try and let me help him, I'd buy him a new hat.. (hey.. he had this thing about down under hats and wanted a leather one.. ) He agreed. Two months later he was completely off all meds.. 3 months he had enrolled back in college, 4 months he was workin, goin to school and tryin to help his girlfriend get off of Aderol. I bought him his hat. When I went to take it to him.. suprise, he had bought me the same hat. I was impressed.. He did so to thank me for helping him.

Those people are trapped in that mode by the drugs they take. If you ever sit and talk to them.. it is scary, very scary.

I gave some to a family cause they had a little boy on retalin. zombie city... bad... this kid was droolin...

With in a month.. notes were sent home to his parent.. what a lovely boy, how smart he is, what have you done... (note.. the school is the one that made them put him on retalin).. I told em that I had to buy for my grandchildren and really couldn't afford to but for him again.. and they refused to buy so I gave em another month supply. They stopped the retalin.. the thrid month.. I told em I coudn't do it.. and they put him back on his retalin.. cause the insurance company paid for retalin and not the products. This, to me, is child abuse.

So,,, just my two cents worth here. Beat me up, call me what ever, but I'm goin to continue my quest to get every child off of retalin, every adult of the others. Even if I have to do it one person at a time.

I wish I would have been more determined when my nephew was alive. Maybe I could have made a difference. maybe he would still be here. It is something I have to live with.. everyday. and I don't want anyone to go through what he did, or his family.

Sorry about our nephew. I cant imagine what it is like to know that you probably could have helped him, if only you were allowed.
At least you have a definite goal now and I respect you for that. Hopefully you will be able to help others.

Isnt it interesting how our officials are completely outraged if a kid goes out a smokes a little pot but sees nothing wrong with loading him up on Retalin?

A relative of mine had good results with fish oil and SAMe.
A close friend of mine used lithium (Dr. Wright) for OCD, they got good results at first, but they had to increase the dose over and over agian, I guess it is one of those things, when your body gets used to the dosage...I would give SAMe a shot.

As for Antidepressants this is an article about them and suicide dated 4/10/06, just got in my mail a few days ago... I do not think all the cases are being reported.

hey Jack, talk with him and see what is he willing to do. Changing diet would be a really good start, fresh air and sunshine, and lots of fresh water...... But he has to be willing to put in the effort too, or it wont do any good
