Default Garlic, Hydrogen Sulfide and Blood Pressure

An interesting study showing how increasing the serum levels of hydrogen sulfide using garlic, can relax arteries by up to 72% and can help to protect the heart in case of heart attack. The body normally produces H2S in small amounts in the brain as well as the arteries, so increasing serum levels could help to relax the brain as well.

Garlic boosts Hydrogen Sulfide to Relax Arteries

Eating garlic is one of the best ways to lower high blood pressure and protect yourself from cardiovascular disease. A new study from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) shows this protective effect is closely linked to how much hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is produced from garlic compounds interacting with red blood cells.

The UAB researchers found this interaction triggered red blood cells to release H2S, which then led to the relaxation of blood vessels. Fresh garlic was used at a concentration equal to eating two cloves. The resulting H2S production caused up to 72 percent vessel relaxation in rat arteries.

This relaxation is a first step in lowering blood pressure and gaining the heart-protective effects of garlic, said David Kraus, Ph.D., a UAB associate professor in the Departments of Environmental Health Sciences and Biology and the study's lead author.

The research team examined molecules in garlic called polysulfides and their ability to liberate H2S within cells. The findings appear in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

"When these garlic compounds are metabolized to H2S in the vascular system, the H2S targets membrane channels and causes smooth muscle cells to relax," Kraus said. "So a garlic-rich diet has many good effects, and H2S may be the common mediator."

The findings add to a study by John Elrod and David Lefer, Ph.D., of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine published in PNAS that showed H2S protected hearts from the tissue and cell damage often seen in heart attack patients.

The new study, performed by Gloria Benavides, Ph.D., of UAB's Department of Environmental Health Sciences, Kraus and others, is the first to show garlic-derived polysulfides in the diet boost bodily H2S production.

H2S is a toxic, flammable gas responsible for the smell of rotten eggs. It's also produced naturally by the body in small amounts, and as age advances, H2S production dwindles.
Exactly how H2S affords the cardiovascular system so much protection is not entirely clear, but it may involve limiting oxidative damage in cells, Kraus said.
"The role of garlic compounds in preventing platelet aggregation, which can trigger a heart attack or stroke, and in limiting cancer growth and the progression of several diseases is well documented," he said.

The new findings show H2S may be the mediator for these protective benefits. Future studies are being planned to better understand how much H2S production is needed through garlic or supplements to maximize those benefits.

The research is supported grants from the American Heart Association and the National Institutes of Health

Notice they say H2S is toxic but they've shown it can actually put rats in a state of suspended animation, or hibernation actually; no side effects when stopped!

The following is a formula I got from a herbal lady:

Equal amounts of garlic, onions, ginger and white carrot. This white carrot is shaped liked a carrot but is white in colour. I do not know its real name.

Blend to a pulp (not watery) in good apple cider vinegar with pepper as hot as the buds can bear. Use one tablespoonful when eating food.

The small amount of H2S generated in the brain and arteries coupled with the small amount from garlic is fine. H2S can also be generated in the gut and that can cause problems.

H2S is generated when there is an encroachment of an overgrowth of foreign bacteria such as candida into the small intestine, a problem called Small Intestine Bowel Overgrowth(SIBO).

This large amount of H2S causes the bad egg gas smell and is not a benign problem as in time, if the problem of overgrowth is not addressed, can cause ulcerative colitis and colon cancer by damaging DNA.

Hydrogen sulfide induces direct radical-associated...[Mol Cancer Res. 2007] - PubMed Result

If a leaky gut is also present the H2S can be absorbed throughout the system and cause fatigue and hibernation symptoms.
People with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome frequently suffer with these problems.

Smile Garlic!

The great thing about garlic is that besides helping to lower BP, it also
helps to keep you free from colds and flu. Fresh garlic is one of Nature's
cheapest and best natural antibiotics. If you don't want the smell on
your breath. eat some fresh parsley afterwards.

Smile Stop a heart attack.

Can an ordinary cooking condiment used in cooking spicy, hot dishes really stop a heart attack or
stroke? These doctors say it can.
Cayenne pepper (also called capsicum frutescens) is a red, hot chili pepper used
primarily for flavoring dishes, but it has also been used for medical purposes for
centuries. This stimulating herb has been widely used all over the world to treat a variety
of health conditions, including heart disease, poor circulation, weak digestion, chronic
pain, sore throat, headaches and toothache, among others.
Cayenne pepper derives its medicinal properties from a resin-like substance known as
capsaicin. Capsaicin is an ingredient that has thermogenic properties, that is, it increases
body temperature and is the greatest blood circulation stimulant known. It doesnt cause palpitations,
hyperactivity or an increase in blood pressure that most other stimulants cause. It also provides temporary
relief of pain, which is why it is used in pain-reducing topical preparations such as Capsazin-P, Zostrix-HP,
Dolorac, R-Gel and others.
Cayenne has steadily gained the reputation of being a wonder herb over the past few decades. Dr.
Richard Schulze, a notable medical herbalist and naturopath, stated, If you master only one herb in your
life, master cayenne pepper. It is more powerful than any other.
Perhaps the most important recognition that cayenne has gained in recent years has been its ability to
stop a heart attack or stroke. Dr. Richard Anderson, author of Cleanse & Purify Thyself, reported that one of
his fellow doctors rushed out into the parking lot to attend to a man who had died of a heart attack while
parking his car. The doctor put cayenne tincture into the mouth of the man, and within a few minutes, the
mans heart started beating again.
According to Dr. John Christopher, pioneer of herbal medicine, In 35 years of practice, and working with the people and teaching, I have never on house calls lost one heart attack patient and the reason is,
whenever I go in--if they are still breathing--I pour down them a cup of cayenne tea (a teaspoon of cayenne
in a cup of hot water), and within minutes they are up and around."
Cayenne has been shown to stop heart attacks in as little as 30 seconds. Perhaps the most well-known
anecdotal evidence of this involved a 90-year-old man in Oregon who had a massive heart attack. When the
medics arrived at his home, he was pronounced dead. His daughter was able to administer cayenne extract
into his mouth, and within a few minutes, he regained consciousness. Thereafter, he was rushed to the
hospital, and while he was in a semi-conscious state, his daughter continued giving him the cayenne
extract. By the time they arrived at the hospital, he had fully recovered and insisted that he be taken home
so that he could mow his lawn! When the doctor asked the daughter what she had given him, and she told
him it was cayenne, the doctor declared it was the closest thing to a miracle he had ever seen.
The capsaicin in cayenne pepper is unrivalled in its ability to boost circulation and increase heart action.
It has a mechanism of action that has the extraordinary ability to enhance cardiovascular performance while
actually lowering blood pressure. Capsaicin has an energizing effect on the entire cardiovascular system.
Dr. Anderson believes that cayenne greatly strengthens the heart and could possibly even prevent heart
attacks. He routinely carries capsules of cayenne with him in the car and whenever he goes hiking,
mountain climbing or backpacking. You never know when you may find someone having a heart attack,
he says.
Other doctors, however, insist that cayenne capsules are not as effective as cayenne tinctures or
cayenne powder in emergency situations, such as in the event of a heart attack or stroke. If a heart attack
or stroke should occur and the person is conscious, it is suggested that 5 to 10 droppersfull of cayenne
pepper tincture (or 1 teaspoon of cayenne powder in a glass of hot water) be administered into the mouth,
and repeated every 15 minutes until the crisis has passed.

Cool Cayenne Pepper Powder!

Dr Richard Schulze was the one who got me started on Cayenne pepper
powder - yers ago. 90,000 heat units or higher is best. I use some daily
on cottage cheese or some other bland food, or in Chile. It has kept me
free of arthritic pain in my knees for years. I buy it in bulk from my Health
Food Store.
