Default high blood pressure/ sesame oil

Im not sure if this post belongs here, but it looked good.... When I was in the health food store yesterday, there was a sign posted by the sesame oil, saying a tablespoon of sesame oil will reduce high blood pressure. Well since I was buying it anyway, I gave some to dad this morning, before the oil, his blood pressure was 190/95. with in a half hour of giving him the oil, I took it again (three times actually cus I couldnt believe the difference) His pressure came down to 140/70.... Is this something everyone has known about and just didnt tell me??? Is this one of those ancient secrets that we have to pay with our first born??? Tell me folks who knows about this? The more I hear about oils, the more amazed I am!!!! Is anyone else willing to try this and tell me if you get the same results

Wow... this is pretty amazing. how long did his blood pressure stay low?

anyone else try this? I should take my own blood pressure. I had high blood pressure for years (was on medication), but lowered it with life style changes.

I used to measure it all the time.. but have gotten out of the habit. probably should as it has a tendency to go up as you get older.

Default possible mechanisms

There are actually quite a few abstracts dealing with sesame and it's hypotensive effects. Here's one that illustrates a few of the ways in which it may work.

Quote:
The study was undertaken to investigate the effect of sesame oil in hypertensive patients who were on antihypertensive therapy either with diuretics (hydrochlorothiazide) or Beta-blockers (atenolol).

Thirty-two male and 18 female patients aged 35 to 60 years old were supplied sesame oil (Idhayam gingelly oil) and instructed to use it as the only edible oil for 45 days.

Blood pressure, anthropometry, lipid profile, lipid peroxidation, and enzymic and non-enzymic antioxidants were measured at baseline and after 45 days of sesame oil substitution.

Substitution of sesame oil brought down systolic and diastolic blood pressure to normal. The same patients were asked to withdraw sesame oil consumption for another 45 days, and the measurements were repeated at the end of withdrawal period. Withdrawal of sesame oil substitution brought back the initial blood pressure values.

A significant reduction was noted in body weight and body mass index (BMI) upon sesame oil substitution. No significant alterations were observed in lipid profile except triglycerides. Plasma levels of sodium reduced while potassium elevated upon the substitution of sesame oil. Lipid peroxidation (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances [TBARS]) decreased while the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and the levels of vitamin C, vitamin E, Beta-carotene, and reduced glutathione (GSH) were increased.

The results suggested that sesame oil as edible oil lowered blood pressure, decreased lipid peroxidation, and increased antioxidant status in hypertensive patients.

eeeek... just took my BP and it was high. Jeeezzz... but I think I'm going to take it at the local drugstore tomorrow. This home monitor gave me 3 quite different readings.

but then again.. maybe the fact that I found out that I will need minor surgery to get a growth off my lower eyelid didn't help my blood pressure today. but.. I will be glad to get it off. weird looking thing.. I am starting to feel like the wicked witch of the west..

I haven't taken it in a long time, but it is usually fine in the doctor's office. but.. I guess I need to pay more attention to it.

well, just me, glad you posted this. starting on the sesame seed oil tomorrow.

another study using different oils:
Quote:
Modulation of blood pressure, lipid profiles and redox status in hypertensive patients taking different edible oils.

Sankar D, Sambandam G, Ramakrishna Rao M, Pugalendi KV.
Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Science, Annamalai University, Annamalainagar-608 002, Tamilnadu, India. [email protected]

BACKGROUND: Free oxygen radicals and insufficiency of antioxidants have been implicated in the pathogenesis of hypertension. We determined the effect of edible oils on blood pressure, lipid profiles and redox status in hypertensive patients given antihypertensive therapy (nifedipine-calcium channel blocker).

METHODS: 530 patients medicated with nifedipine were divided into 3 groups (
  • 356 patients-sesame oil;
  • 87 patients-sunflower oil;
  • 47 patients-groundnut oil)
  • and the control group (n=40) received only the drug, nifedipine.

The respective oils were supplied to the patients and instructed to use as the only edible oil for 60 days, which comes to 35 g of oil/day/person.

Blood pressure, lipid profiles [
  • total cholesterol (TC),
  • low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C),
  • high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and
  • triglycerides (TG)],
  • lipid peroxidation [thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS)

  • enzymatic [superoxide dismutase (SOD),
  • catalase (CAT) and
  • glutathione peroxidase (GPx)] and
  • nonenzymatic [(vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene and reduced glutathione (GSH)]

in blood were measured at baseline and after 60 days of oil substitution.

RESULTS: Patients with nifedipine alone or with respective oils had significantly lowered blood pressure.

TC, LDL-C and TG decreased while HDL-C elevated in sesame and sunflower oil groups.

Increases of HDL-C and TG were noted in groundnut oil group.

TBARS levels reduced in all the groups whereas the reduction was remarkable in sesame oil group. Activities of SOD elevated in the 3 oil groups whereas GPx and CAT increased only in sesame oil group. Levels of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene and GSH increased in sesame oil group whereas vitamin E and beta-carotene were elevated only in sunflower and groundnut oil groups.

GSH increased in drug control group also.

CONCLUSION: Among the 3 oils, sesame oil offers better protection over blood pressure, lipid profiles and lipid peroxidation and increases enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants.
1 tbsp sesame oil = 13.6 gm
1 tsp sesame oil = 4.5 tsp

35 gms per day comes to (2 tbsp + 2 tsp) per day per person. but that is oils used for everything.. dressing, cooking.

Just me, how much did you give your father before your test?

I had surgery, last year, for hernia. The nurses and surgeon were upset with my blood pressure. They said something about 200. I said I was working with my doctor on this and that I felt very stressed before surgery. I was not about to go through another day without this surgery. The hernia was getting larger. Danger. So, I lied. Yes I was under stress; but that is very natural for me. However, I was not working with my doctor on the BP. He already wanted to put me on statins due to slightly elevated cholesterol (203). I told him I would eat more fiber, exercise, etc. That's pretty much a lie too. I don't know why I tease myself over these things. I do exercise a little; but not really enough to make a difference. I'm only 135 pounds at 5'10". It's not like I need to loose weight. But I am trying to change my diet to something less stressful to the body.

jfh, you don't exercise to lose weight. You exercise to improve your metabolism. It improves everything..

if you exercise, you will find that you get a little hungrier. You don't have to eat much more to compensate for what you burn, unfortunately.

walking is great for blood pressure, and not "stressfull" exercise. If you have a dog, take the dog for a long walk everyday. and don't try to "pump it". Start easy, at your own pace, and just the distance you feel comfortable with. Just walk, enjoy the scenery, being outdoors, take in the neighborhood.. enjoy it. You will find that by the end of the walk, you will feel more relaxed and calmer. That will also be good for the blood pressure. Mark the time, and how far you went.

Then I bet you will find as time goes on, you will be walking farther and farther in the same amount of time with the same effort. It is amazing how the body responds to exercise.

and after a while.. you will find if you don't take that walk, you will miss it. or your body will.

Im sorry, somehow I missed this thread... wasnt paying attention I guess.... When we did the testing back in 06, I gave him a tablespoon of oil, the first dose, I took his blood pressure a half hour later and noticed it was down... It seemed to work really fast for him at the time.... I kept him on a tablespoon in the morning, a tablespoon at night and then used a bit for his salad at lunch time.... It was able to keep him off the meds with a pretty stable reading for the next seven months, After that, we had to make the decision to put him in a nursing home... they immediately started him back on the high blood pressure meds, the blood sugar meds and many many others... The doctors proceeded to destroy the man by giving hims tons of meds behind my back... By the time he passed away this april he was taking over 17 meds. most of which I was throwing a fit about.. And at that point I had already forced them to stop about a half a dozen of them with a threat of abuse..

Thanks for the information just me.

I'm sorry to hear that the "all knowing" establishment took your father's care from you. I hope I have someone so caring when I'm in need. Caretakers are wonderful people.

It's 101F in central Texas today. It has been in the upper 90s for 6 weeks. No end in site.

I compensate by rebounding, push-ups, and other isometrics. I seem to tire quickly. I did that long ago too. Something has taken my energy. I am building up the exercise slowly, as you say; but I think I need to build up my liver too. I'm starting to work with an herbalist to help with such internal things.

try yoga.. it is gentle, and energizing. The stretching will make you feel better.

also.. I've heard Tai Chi is good for keeping your energy level up. but, I've not tried that. I think I will look into it in the future. I got a lot out of martial arts.. but I too old for the tornado kicks and sparring. I've heard Tai Chi is similar, but more gentle, and still invigorating.

but.. you need to do something to get the chi flowing better. I, scorpiotiger, am ordering you.. resistance is futile.

just me,

I'm sorry for the loss of your father. It's a tragedy, the way we often lose control of our own health care (and the health care of those we love) once we/they enter a "health care establishment".

There's got to be a better way to deal with such things, on their part. I don't know how we could bring about such change, but I know it's sorely needed.

JFH, this might help you regards the exercise.

Week 1.

Start walking for 90 seconds, then jog at an easy pace for 30 seconds, then back to the walking again.

Keep doing this for 20 minutes, with the walking and jogging sections.

You can do this for about 5 days, but no need to do consecutive days, or you'll end up sedentary for 2 days straight, I'd give it 3 on 1 off, 2 on 1 off, so you split those 2 off days up nicely.

Week 2

Repeat week one, but make walking 80 seconds, jogging 40 seconds.

Week 3

Repeat week two, but make walking 70 seconds, jogging 50 seconds.

You can see the pattern emerging here. After a few months, you should be up to a full 20 minutes of non-stop jogging, Then you can choose how to progress from there, I.E. jog for 5 minutes longer, or try to go further in the same time, or even just maintain your 20 minutes 5 days a week.

Might be something to consider.
