Default Dealing with elderly parents question

dad is great, not stubborn, open to alternative medicine, exercises etc

mom is a pain in the ass, very stubborn, thinks the doctor is god almighty (will not let me talk to her doctor), will not listen to reason. (Long stroy short, 22 months ago we had a break in and the cops caught the guy. She would not let me file charges because she was scared the 19 yr old punk would seek revenge). She thinks every drug is a god send, but herbs are dangerous.

advice please

Leave your mother be. She has won the right to self determination though years of living and surviving. She is and should be her own agency. She is a citizen in a democracy with liberty for all, not liberty just for mothers who you approve of. You would not want her trying to change you so don't try to change her.

Regarding the break in, the cops should be able to prosecute if he was caught with stolen goods with or without your mothers approval.

I agree with Arrow. Your Mom is elderly, and if she's more comfortable with her doctor's advice and treatment, although you don't agree, she should have the right to do things her way without stress. She may not have many years left, you'll never regret it if you're patient with her, and just care for her and love her like you've been doing all along. When she's not around anymore, her stubborn attitude, etc. will seem to be pretty petty and minor in retrospect. Many folks our age have had to care for our aging and sickly parents, I respect you for all you do for your Mom and Dad, keep up the good work...and chillll. PS: thank goodness that nobody was injured in that break-in.

I just wish she would be more open to herbs and some natural meds. She is at least open to an extent on shopping at whole foods. Regarding the break in, the cops did prosecute but all the punk received was community service (after a night in jail).

Everyone has their own set of beliefs, and most people are stubborn when it comes to change. I, however, am not like that. I seek the truth wherever it is from whoever it is.

You don't have to be a MD to teach, nor do you have to be a PhD to learn.

I agree. So I would continue to work with your father and use him as an example. The more stuff she sees working for him the more she might be inclined to try it.

I was getting her to the gym once a week for awhile because she saw him improve. Also, she is fighting a cold (of which the asshole doc was more than happy to call in a script for amoxicillan for). When she is finished, at least she will eat yogurt.
