Default World's Happiest People

Here's a site that includes a group of scientists that
traveled the world to try and find the healthiest people.

Now they are on a quest to find the happiest people.

You may agree or disagree, but it is a fun site.

Default Happiest people?

I doubt it will be anywhere in the states.

I vote for New Zealand Aren't they having cooler weather
now 8)

Or some remote island where one can ride a horse
instead of driving a car, to get places.

project that is co-sponsored by the National Geographic
Society and has large funding. Lot's of people with
letters after their name.

Re: Small Iranian Study Shows Efficacy of Saffron as an Antidepressant

Moshiri E, Basti AA, Noorbala AA, et al. Crocus sativus L. (petal) in the treatment of mild-to-moderate depression: a double-blind, randomized and placebo-controlled trial. Phytomed. 2006;13:607-611.

Saffron (Crocus sativus) is the world's most expensive spice because the stigma (the portion of the flower used for cooking) must be hand picked off the flower. Saffron also has many health benefits. Iran is the world's largest producer of saffron and has been investing in research into its potential medicinal uses. In Persian traditional medicine, saffron is used for depression. Studies have shown that the stigma of the saffron is safe and effective for mild to moderate depression. The petal of saffron is much less expensive than the stigma. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of the petal of saffron in the treatment of mild to moderate depression.

Forty outpatients of the Roozbeh Psychiatric Clinic (Tehran, Iran) with medically recognized mild to moderate depression participated in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Patients were required to be free of all psychotropic medications for at least 4 weeks before study entry. Patients received 30 mg/day of extract of saffron petals or placebo for 6 weeks. The extract was prepared by extracting 120 g of dried and milled petal with 1800 ml ethanol (80%). Depression was rated with the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) throughout the study.

At baseline, both groups were not significantly different. At six-weeks, saffron-treated patients had a significantly better outcome on the HAM-D test compared with placebo-treated patients (P<0.001). There was no significant difference between groups in terms of side effects.

This is the first clinical trial that shows the antidepressant efficacy for the petal of saffron. The authors state that the limitations of the study were: a single fixed dose was used, the small number of participants, and the short follow-up. Nonetheless, this study was extremely well conducted, evaluated, and written-up, which adds to the credibility of the findings.
