Default Gut Bacteria Affects the Brain

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...0517110315.htm

Quote:
Researchers at McMaster University have conclusive evidence that bacteria residing in the gut influence brain chemistry and behaviour.

The findings are important because several common types of gastrointestinal disease, including irritable bowel syndrome, are frequently associated with anxiety or depression.

In addition there has been speculation that some psychiatric disorders, such as late onset autism, may be associated with an abnormal bacterial content in the gut.

Serotonin, a neurotransmitter, is largely manufactured in the gut... so if you knock the flora balance off you will have mood disorders of various sort. Many people with crohns, irritable bowel and ulcerative colitis are on antidepressants.

One treatment that is used for irritable bowel by conventional doctors is the antidepressant Paxil. Paxil will actually slow down the diarrhea... it also promotes the manufacture of serotonin... imagine that.

Impaired Carbohydrate Digestion and Transport and Mucosal Dysbiosis in the Intestines of Children with Autism and Gastrointestinal Disturbances

Interesting to read how this affects those with Autism.

Trouble is many kids these days are born via C Section so never pick up mothers gut flora.
Most kids never get anywhere near the Natural Age of Weaning which would increase their exposure to naturally acquired gut flora.
Many kids not have natural immune status disrupted by vaccines and antibiotics in the early years.
Most kids don't get sufficient full body sun exposure to attain natural vitamin d status (vitamin d is anti microbial so reduces pathogenic bacteria) and many kids use nightlights thus reducing MELATONIN secretion (melatonin is a natural antibiotic)

The problem with much so called food available today is that it is packaged/preserved/processed in such a way the shelf life is extended and the food isn't attractive to bacteria or natural disintegration. We need to base our diet (and our kids) on foods we prepare ourselves from raw ingredients.

Breast feeding will supply the baby with all the flora it needs... so moms who have c-sections need not worry... they just need to breast feed.

and this is exactly why I have been recommending GABA supplements to those with depression or OCD and for those who wish to get off of Benzodiazepines and other anti-anxiety drugs. Now I will add the probiotic of L. rhamnousus

The authors explain:

"GABA is the main CNS inhibitory neurotransmitter and is significantly involved in regulating many physiological and psychological processes. Alterations in central GABA receptor expression are implicated in the pathogenesis of anxiety and depression, which are highly comorbid with functional bowel disorders.

In this work, we show that chronic treatment with L. rhamnosus induced region-dependent alterations in GABA(B1b) mRNA in the brain with increases in cortical regions (cingulate and prelimbic) and concomitant reductions in expression in the hippocampus, amygdala, and locus coeruleus, in comparison with control-fed mice. In addition, L. rhamnosus (JB-1) reduced GABA(Aα2) mRNA expression in the prefrontal cortex and amygdala, but increased GABA(Aα2) in the hippocampus."

I am so glad I found this forum. I'm floored. I take Imtrex for migraines. I am also having major problems with my digestive system. This year I have had anxiety and depression, which I assumed was from suffering so many insults to my health (all with no medical reason), or maybe I thought I was going through menopause. But, I noticed that when I take my Imtrex, I feel so much better, I feel right.

Now, my mother, she has MS, she is 69, she has diarrhea damn-near nonstop all day. She had stage 1 colon cancer but she just did her colonscopy and they did not have find anything, no polyps. She suggers from migranes almost daily now. In fact, she has been taking that Imtrex one or twice a day now, which she is not supposed to do.

I never thought that she might have gut issues, or that perhaps my headaches and issues might be related to that. It makes sense, total sense.

I need to see a good naturopath because we are all so sick in my house, even my baby, and I don't care what road we need to travel, I will find out where it ends.
