Default Seaweed Extract vs. Arthritis

Quote:
In a randomized, double-blinded, controlled pilot study involving 50 subjects with moderate to severe osteoarthritis of the knee, treatment with a natural multi-mineral supplement from seaweed (Aquamin) was found to improve pain and reduce stiffness over the course of 12 weeks.

Subjects were randomized into 4 groups: 1) received Aquamin (2,400 mg/d); 2) received glucosamine sulfate (1,500 mg/d); 3) received combination of Aquamin and glucosamine sulfate; 4) received a placebo. Outcome was based on WOMAC scores and results of the 6-minute walking distances test.

Results showed significant improvement in symptoms in both the Aquamin group and the glucosamine sulfate group, as compared to the placebo group. Interestingly, subjects who received the combination treatment did not show significant improvements.

Subjects in the Aquamin group were found to have significant improvements in WOMAC pain, activity, composite, and stiffness scores. Subjects in the Aquamin group and subjects in the glucosamine sulfate group both showed improvements in the 6-minute walking distance test, with those in the Aquamin group walking 101 feet extra (+7%) and those in the glucosamine sulfate group walking 56 feet extra (+3.5%). All treatments were well tolerated.

The results of this study are promising and suggest that Aquamin may be a safe and effective therapy for the treatment of pain, stiffness, and limited mobility associated with knee osteoarthritis. Additional research is warranted.

note: There are quite a few natural options for arthritis. I'm not sure if this "new" option is any better than what's already available but I think it's good to know about as many options as possible ... so if one (or ten) of the other options don't work ... maybe the "newest" one will.

BTW, Swanson Vitamins recently started carrying this extract.

Here are the nutritional facts:

Don't know if this stuff has the same effect on arthritic joints, but in an effort to economize on the Pectasol Chelation Formula, I fought 5# of sodium alginate. Now I need to order some bulk Pectasol.
