Default Carrageenan May Cause Cancer

Info about how the ingredient carrageenan in pet foods may cause cancer. I checked my dog and cat food, and it doesn't have this ingredient.

Not so great in humans, either!

Carrageenan is extracted from red seaweed by powerful chemical alkali solvents – capable of removing skin as quick as any acid. It’s used for food thickening and its fat and gelatin qualities. In its natural state it’s healthy; in its processed state, it’s highly antagonistic to humans

I would like to decrease dairy and purchased organic almond milk only to find Carrageenan in the ingredients.

Info on that claims it could cause inflammation especially in the gut.

Great. That's what I need: MORE INFLAMED GUT PLEASE.

Should I take it back to the store? Make my own from almonds?

Why decrease dairy?

In fact, increased intake of calcium from dairy products was associated with a higher fracture risk. An Australian study2 showed the same results. Additionally, other studies3-4 have also found no protective effect of dairy calcium on bone. You can decrease your risk of osteoporosis by reducing sodium and animal protein intake in the diet,5-7 increasing intake of fruits and vegetables,8 exercising,9 and ensuring adequate calcium intake from plant foods such as leafy green vegetables and beans, as well as calcium-fortified products such as breakfast cereals and juices

Several cancers, such as ovarian cancer, have been linked to the consumption of dairy products. The milk sugar lactose is broken down in the body into another sugar, galactose. In turn, galactose is broken down further by enzymes. According to a study by Daniel Cramer, M.D., and his colleagues at Harvard,12 when dairy product consumption exceeds the enzymes’ capacity to break down galactose, it can build up in the blood and may affect a woman’s ovaries. Some women have particularly low levels of these enzymes, and when they consume dairy products on a regular basis, their risk of ovarian cancer can be triple that of other women.
I know some people that have quit dairy, some voluntarily and some it was suggested for stomach issues - that just feel better. I thought I'd go without it just for a month or so to see if there is any improvement for me - mostly in digestion and sinus congestion. The issues are not chronic, just troublesome. I have increased yogurt/kefir (because I really, really love smoothies), along with the added cream in coffee, butter on everything (ghee, too) and I notice problems within an hour.

Elimination is the best procedure, I feel. When going organic it was amazing. Then, gluten free: again, AMAWZING!!

You don't know, until you try. Next: Coffee.

Makes sense. Some people report better luck with raw milk, but if cheese and yogurt bother you, it definitely makes sense to dump dairy, at least for a month and then resume cautious testing.

I only do coffee and wine on occasions, and don't really miss it much.
