Default The 70/30 rule

Hi, new to the forum! Just wanted to share something I learned earlier this year.

I just recently lost 40lbs this year and learned something incredibly valuable.

I always thought that you could eat "normal" and workout hard and you would lose weight. Unfortunately that is not true. Learned that "you cannot out training a bad diet."

Here was the key that turned everything around for me...

"Abs are made in the kitchen"... Weightloss is 70% diet and only 30% activity! So even with the perfect workout plan, without proper diet and nutrition we are only getting 30% results!

Learning this and having the right program in place changed my life. Hope this is helpful to someone

I'd even go 80/20, so yes, I agree 110%

Congrats on your accomplishments.

I agree as well. Every time I see the show biggest loser I just think if people really think exercise is the one stop solution they are crazy. I do think you need both for a healthy heart, but like you said 70% is diet. I'd lean towards 60%, but it all depends on how much you workout.

Me too, 60% (mainly because eating low on the food chain has become a lifestyle for me)

cdobeso,
Congratulations! Just remember, it depends on your normal daily activity level & metabolism. There's no cookie cutter answer as everyone's needs are varied.
If someone sits most of the day (work, computer, tv), diet is going to be strict if they want to maintain a healthy weight.

My friend is a personal trainer and I've been with him to the gym a few times, he tries to help me shift my beer belly! and he's said that sit ups etc works the top part of your abdomen, but ultimately, the bottom part of fat can only be shifted through healthy dieting. This sounds true but you know the amount of hearsay nonsense that travels around the gym, then again much like the internet

Yeah, diet is the key. You don't need to work just ab workouts to lose the belly. When your body burns fat, it will do so in all areas.

Exactly! It will depend on lifestyle, but you still manage majority of your fat loss through diet and the activity ties up loose ends.
