Default barley grass juice powder & omeprazole

hi my mom was prescribed omeprazole by her physician for GERD. i ordered barley grass juice powder for her and i was wondering if it's okay for her to take barley grass juice powder at the same time. my mom said don't order stuff like that again, they're lies. i mean i get that there are tons of supplements & false advertisements out there that claim to do a lot of things but i think barley grass is ok . can someone offer their opinion?

Barley grass juice is of superior nutrition as is alfalfa grass juice and wheat grass juice. Your mother is suffering from a rather significant knowledge deficit... all the grasses are excellent offering an abundance of nutrients but they do need to be in a powered or juice form because the cellulose is difficult for people to digest. We are not cows and not equiped to digest them in their unprocessed state.

The omeprazole she is taking will help eliminate the symptoms of GERD, at least in part, but it will not cure and in the long run her nutritional status will suffer because she will not be digesting her protiens adequately.

Your recommendation for her is good but it too will not likely help her GERD.

you can try vinegar and a pill that helps is hydrochloric acid tablets as some people dont tolerate vinegar well. All will all depend on the cuase of the situation, and there can be several causes to reflux.

Here are some threads to read through with a variety of recommendations, but try to figure out the cause... sometimes the cure tells you what the cause was and thats the best we can hope for without costly tests and medical interventions.

It is my humble opinion that gerd is the result of organisms growing in the stomach, which can be traced back to one of two possibilities. Either your mom does not have enough stomach acid, or the pH of her stomach acid is too high. In any case, she should have it checked.

Both above conditions can result from poor diet (sugar, corn syrup, too many simple carbs, alcohol, medications, etc.) or ant-acids.

actually i called her doctor to clarify and they said she had gastritis and epigastric pain. i looked up the causes of gastritis and it said alcohol consumption, smoking, dairy could cause gastritis. my mom doesn't drink, smoke, dairy, eat refined foods, corn syrup, or take medications except for the antibiotics & omeprazole. she generally eats rice, noodles, veggies, and eggs....she did tell me that her doctor said she had bacteria so i'm guessing it was H. pylori which caused the gastritis :/ and stress probably contributed too.

Those are both high glycemic foods.

The symptoms can be abject misery: searing abdominal pain, debilitating stomach cramps, an excruciating, rising burn, acid-filled hiccups, tightened throat, constant sleep disturbance, and even the rare but terrifying bouts of choking from nighttime acid inhalation. Im talking of course about acid reflux or GERD as its commonly called these days. I personally suffered from occasional bouts of GERD and experienced all the symptoms above for years during and even after my endurance days. (It wasnt until I gave up grains that my GERD completely disappeared.)

Most often bacteria is a cause of gastritis and acid reflux, but the bacteria is merely a symptom of not having enough stomach acid to keep the bacteria in check.

Stress does not cause gastritits. stress results from it though.

She also could have a hiatial hernia. This can cause acid reflux but it takes advanced testing to figure this out. Hiatial hernias are usually the cause of the worst cases of reflux though, not mild cases, in general.

So did this doctor treat the bacteria?

Did she have GERD before the antibiotics?
Exactly when did the gerd start in relationship to the infection.

Im suspecting that the infection is not really gone
and her HCL secretions are too low.
Low HCL allows bacteria to grow in the stomach lining.

Its not advisable to take HCL if you have an ulcer as it will burn more.
