Exclamation Walmarts Connection to Tazreen Factory Fire

Disposable Labor: The Tazreen Fire in Bangladesh

Last weekend, 125 garment workers died in Bangladesh in a horrific factory fire that tore through the Tazreen Fashion factory. Accounts of the conditions at the factory, and in the fire, should conjure up a certain amount of deja vu for anyone familiar with the history of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, which occurred over 100 years ago; the fire started in late evening, and moved quickly through a building with inadequate safety controls. Workers struggled to leave, finding locked doors and no emergency exits, which left them trapped inside the factory to burn to death. Meanwhile, fire crews struggled to get to the site, with limited access making it difficult to respond promptly.

That this fire was preventable is obvious. It had been flagged as orange for unsafe conditions by Walmart, one of its customers, in 2011, for example. Yet, a variety of companies continued relying on the services offered by Tazreen Fashion because it offered something immensely appealing to companies in the West: Cheap, essentially disposable labor.

The factory, owned by Tazreen Fashion Ltd., had no emergency exits, and many workers were burnt alive, as they got trapped in heavy smoke, said Muhammad Mahboob, a director at the Fire Service and Civil Defence. Some workers jumped from the eight-story building to escape the flames, according to Mohammad Sharif, who runs a local grocery store and whose parents-in-law worked at the plant.

Gee, where's the outrage? The accountability by Wal-Mart? Just as our squishy feely weely warm and fuzzy MARKETING FRENZY time of year begins: Thanksgiving. What ever.

Unconscionable. I hope wal-mart goes down financially. That is what I pray for each and every night.

Wallmart, one of its customers....
Who are the other customers?

Not to diminish the tragedy, but one-sided Marxist attacks from Businessweek are not a new thing. I bet Walmart is not happy to lose the supply of clothing, because they sell clothing to make money.

I rely on Wall-Mart for all of my automotive fluids, which are manufactured in large, western facilities.

If any other retailer could offer Shell lubricants cheaper than Wall-mart, I would happily patronize them.

Heck, if Businessweek would run an article on how Al Gore owns tons of stock in Occidental Petroleum, and how much wealth he would have lost if Hillary didn't intervene on Momar Gaddafi's attempt to nationalize the Libyan oil industry, I might just subscribe. Of course, the amount of energy Al Gore consumes with his mansion and his business jet is a topic for another post.

I don't do walmart - can't stand the place. Daughter purchased an air mattress for her move to Texas - never opened. Made it's way to Midland and back home. They were NOT going to allow the return since it was a mattress.

Needed to get FOUR (4) other "managers" to help, when my daughter noticed their return policy on THE WALL BEHIND THEM--that claimed within 21 days and unopened...it was allowed. It was NOT opened. She had the receipt and it was within the 21 days. Took over 20 minutes for this to happen.

Anyhoo, back to the subject: I feel they (Walmart) are aware of the many violations to human rights these countries force upon their workers. Doesn't make it right even if walmart were TO GIVE the items away for FREE.

People died. I learned of the injustices way back with the Kathy Lee Gifford clothing line. Walmart HAD to at some point LOOK at the factory??

Blood is on their hands as well, imo. It's an atrocity - as long as I am aware of it - I CANNOT patronize these TRILLION dollar companies.

I also will NOT purchase Chocolate that is made thru slave labor of children.

For in my opinion, I am just shrugging my shoulders and saying "well, it isn't MY problem or MY fault." When actually I would be AGREEING to the hell these people are put thru to make money to live.

Just like China. Nope. Cannot. In good conscience.

It's rare when I don't get good service at Wall-Mart, however, I typically treat my vendors as if they're the customer, unless they're being downright assholish, like UPS.

However, I do fully understand your philosophy and I do agree with it.

Reminds me of an excellent Greenpeace poster that had to be pulled because it was bothering their core supporters (READ: hypocrites).

It had a picture of Capt. Hazelwood on it and it read:

"His driving didn't cause the Exxon Valdez oil spill, yours did!"
