Default Free eBook Website, Is It Legal?

Anyone know how to tell if a website is legal?
This eBook site is offering free downloads, but I don't know how to tell if it's a legal download site or not.
Or if there's viruses attached to anything..
Anyone know?

*removed bad link yikes!

I have a small list of links to free eBook on-line sites. These sites are legal. Even Barnes & Noble has free eBooks for their Nook eBook readers.

Here is one site that explains one reason why they are legal.

Quote:
The only "restrictions" we'll be placing is simply that we will encourage authors to put up the first novel or novels in an ongoing popular series, where possible. And we will ask authors who are interested not to volunteer more than, at most, five or six novels or collections at any one time.

The reason for the first provision is obvious — to generate more public interest in an ongoing series. I'll have more to say about that in a moment. The reason for the second provision is that one of the things we hope the Baen Free Library will do is make it easier for a broader audience to become familiar with less well known authors. Burying the one or two novels which a new or midlist author might have under a mountain of Big Name backlist titles would work against that. And there's no reason to do so, anyway, because anyone can get a pretty good idea of whether they like a given author after reading a few of his or her books.

Viruses? I don't think so. Some are PDF files which you can load on your eBook reader or read on your PC.

I'm going to guess illegal from hiding who owns the site and Russian servers. Could be legit, but if I was going to run something illegal it would be off shore in a place like Russia or certain Asian countries and hide my identification. Just too many clues for it to be legit in my opinion.

Question

I have a Kindle. Jim, Will those sites work for ALL E-readers?
I usually get my E-books through Amazon from where it was purchased for me.
Thanks for the links you gave.

Earlybird, some of them have several download formats. I have a B&N Nook, so I don't know how Kindle works. However, I see that https://www.baenebooks.com/default.aspx has an "email book to my Kindle". Others will have a zip file that you unzip and copy it from your PC to the Kindle into some folder.
