\r\n \r\n ncredible, groundbreaking new research just published in the Journal of the Medical Association of Thailand found that the primary polyphenol in turmeric curcumin is able to repair and even regenerate the liver tissues in diabetic rats.Researchers at the Srinakharinwirot University in Bangkok administered curcumin to rats afflicted with diabetes and whose livers demonstrated the characteristic pathology and destruction of tissues and microvasculature. The curcumin was able to trigger a significant reversal of the condition.
\n
\nFascinatingly, liver microvasculature in curcumin treated group developed into regenerate and repair into healthy and normal characteristics, the research team said, in its findings. These results optimistically demonstrated the potential use of curcumin as a novel therapeutic agent in liver pathology of diabetic rats.
\n
\nThe Thai research is just the latest albeit most promising to date research showing a treatment link between curcumin and both forms of diabetes, Type I and Type II.
\n
\nEarlier research reveals similar findings
\n
\nResearchers, who published their results in the journal Diabetes Care in July, said they discovered that over nine months, a daily dose of curcumin a compound in curry spice appeared to prevent new cases of diabetes among people with so-called pre-diabetes, or abnormally high blood sugar levels that could eventually progress into full-blown Type II diabetes, which is also linked to obesity.
\n
\nThat study, which was also Thai-based, followed 240 adults with pre-diabetes who were randomly assigned to either take curcumin capsules or a placebo that looked identical but contained no active ingredient, Reuters reported.
\n
\nAfter nine months, 19 of the 116 placebo patients had developed Type II diabetes, compared to none of the 119 patients who took the curcumin.
\nThe researchers, led by Dr. Somlak Chuengsamarn of Srinakharinwirot University in Nakornnayok, Thailand, said their findings were an endorsement.
\n
\nOur study showed that the curcumin extract can effectively prevent the prediabetes population from developing type 2 diabetes mellitus, wrote the research team. Although we found that the results were quite remarkable, a longer trial may be required to see if the curcumin-treated prediabetes population will eventually develop type 2 diabetes mellitus.
\nBecause of its benefits and safety, we propose that curcumin extract may be used for an intervention therapy for the prediabetes population, the team wrote.
\n
\nOne thing experts agree on is that the concentration of curcumin is not the same in each extract or capsule.
\nIn the July Thai study, participants took six capsules a day containing 250 mg each of curcuminoids.
\n
\nOther health advantages
\n
\nLast year, the testing company ConsumerLab.com found that 20 percent of curcumin and turmeric supplements it tested failed the companys quality review. And the cost of getting the amount of curcumin used in this study would range from 39 cents to $1.50 per day, depending on the supplement used, Reuters reported.
\n
\nAs for the studys results, Constance Brown-Riggs, a certified diabetes educator and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, said more research was needed but that what had been discovered thus far is compelling, and the good news is there seemed to be minimal adverse effects.
\n
\nOther health benefits are thought to be linked to this compound, which is one of the most clinically studied ever.
\n
\nFor example, scientists agree that curcumin may have anti-inflammatory properties and may act as an antioxidant, says Discovery Health. Other research is looking into the use of curcumin and turmeric in treating many medical conditions, including Alzheimers disease, high cholesterol and osteoarthritis.
\n
\nEven if you dont eat a lot of food from certain cultures that use curry, you have likely eaten something with curcumin. If youve had a hot dog with mustard, you have: curcumin gives mustard its distinctive tangy flavor and yellow color.

\r\n \r\n Turmeric is awesome, and is one of the top 10 herbs, however, it is poorly absorbed, is quickly metabolized, and contains only 2% - 5% of the active curcuminoid ingredients.
\n
\nOn the other hand, 95% (or higher) curcumin contains all three curcuminoids, and taking one 400mg capsule is equal to taking approx 8000mg of turmeric.
\n
\nCurcumin absorption can be greatly improved by taking it with piperine, which is an ingredient in black pepper, as well as bromelain, which is an extract made from pineapple core and stem. By taking all together with a good fat, such as coconut oil or olive oil, the absorption of curcumin can be greatly increased.
\n
\n95% or higher curcumin, taken as a 400mg capsule twice per day would be the equivalent to injesting 16 grams of turmeric per day.
\n
\nWhat does curcumin do?
\n
\n- It increases energy in an aging brain.
\n- It is shown to positively influence more than 700 genes.
\n- It inhibits the proliferation of tumor cells.
\n- It inhibits the transformation of cells from normal to tumor.
\n- It helps the body destroy mutated cancer cells so they cannot spread.
\n- It prevents the development of additional blood supply , that is necessary for cancer cell growth.
\n- It inhibits the growth of H- Pylori.
\n- It binds with heavy metals, such as cadmium and lead.
\n- It inhibits the growth of bacteria, parasites, and fungi.
\n- It initiates apoptocis. ( cancer cells self-destruct)
\n- It stops and reverses all stages of cancer growth.
\n- It improves the response of cancer drugs while reducing the side effects.
\n- It reduces inflammation in the brain as well as the rest of the body.
\n- It reverses inflammation damage caused from too much omega 6 oils.
\n- It binds with excess iron, preventing damage.
\n
\nCan you think of one good reason why you are not taking 400-800mg of curcumin daily??\r\n

I\'ve heard that tumeric needs a fat and also something like black pepper for it to absorb property. I\'ve been making brown/black rice in my rice cooker for dinner and I put a tablespoon of olive oil (fat) with the water and a teaspoon of tumeric when I mix it. Then after it\'s cooked I put a mix of red and black pepper. Hopefully I\'m absorbing a lot of the turmeric, but I have to admit I absolutely love my rice and add a few other things to it and eat it daily.\r\n

\r\n \r\n This is only my opinion, so I\'m not prepared to defend or argue it. I am not in favor of promoting bioavailability of an herbal extract or even a whole herb. There is a reason that some herbs are not readily available to the body. Side effects, sometimes serious ones, can occur. That\'s what pharmaceutical companies do, and that\'s why drugs have such bad side effects. There are some excellent healing herbs that contain saponins that can cause pretty severe problems if they were "forced" by such things as black pepper (peperine) into the body. Saponins have a strong hemolytic effect on red blood cells. I do use curcumin, an extract of turmeric, but I don\'t try to force the body to take it. I feel the same way about liposomal vitamin C (and other liposomals). I would never take that. There may be body parts or cells that find vitamin C unfriendly. I\'m very much in favor of whole herbs.

\r\n \r\n Turmeric is a potent part of Ayurvedic medicine, to which Jainists have also contributed. This gold-colored spice, derived from the rhizome of the plant Curcuma longa L., has traditionally been used in India for the treatment of numerous diseases. Turmeric is a rich source of numerous biologically active constituents such as polyphenols, sesquiterpenes, diterpenes, triterpenoids, sterols, and alkaloids. Happily, modern science has delineated the molecular basis for the pharmacological properties and use of turmeric against disease. In fact, a growing number of clinical trials have unequivocally demonstrated the efficacy and safety of turmeric in human subjects.
\n
\nYet, only one of its many biologically active components has been celebrated in the West. Thats curcumin, which while constituting just 25% of turmeric, is turmerics most-studied component. Although some of the activities of turmeric can be mimicked by curcumin, other activities are curcumin-independent. Cell-based studies have demonstrated the potential of turmeric as an antimicrobial, insecticidal, larvicidal, antimutagenic, radioprotector, and anticancer agent. Numerous animal studies have shown the potential of this spice against proinflammatory diseases, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, depression, diabetes, obesity, and atherosclerosis. Also, at the molecular level, this spice has been shown to modulate numerous cell-signaling pathways.

Since curcumin is not easily available to the body, you won\'t overdose very easily either. Yet it is still very powerful. https://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocente...cals/curcumin/

\r\n \r\n Clinical trials in humans indicate that the systemic bioavailability of orally administered curcumin is relatively low (1-3) and that mostly metabolites of curcumin, instead of curcumin itself, are detected in plasma or serum following oral consumption (4, 5). In the intestine and liver, curcumin is readily conjugated to form curcumin glucuronides and curcumin sulfates or, alternately, reduced to hexahydrocurcumin (Figure 2) (6). Curcumin metabolites may not have the same biological activity as the parent compound. In one study, conjugated or reduced metabolites of curcumin were less effective inhibitors of inflammatory enzyme expression in cultured human colon cells than curcumin itself (7) . In a clinical trial conducted in Taiwan, serum curcumin concentrations peaked 1-2 hours after an oral dose; peak serum concentrations of curcumin were 0.5, 0.6, and 1.8 micromoles/liter following doses of 4, 6, and 8 g of curcumin, respectively (8). Curcumin could not be detected in serum at lower doses than 4 g/day. More recently, a clinical trial conducted in the UK found that plasma concentrations of curcumin, curcumin sulfate, and curcumin glucuronide were in the range of 10 nanomoles/liter (0.01 micromole/liter) one hour after a 3.6 g oral dose of curcumin (9). Curcumin and its metabolites could not be detected in plasma at doses lower than 3.6 g/day. Curcumin and its glucuronidated and sulfated metabolites were also measured in urine after a dose of 3.6 g/day. There is some evidence that orally administered curcumin accumulates in gastrointestinal tissues. For instance, when colorectal cancer patients took 3.6 g/d of curcumin orally for seven days prior to surgery, curcumin was detected in malignant and normal colorectal tissue (10). In contrast, curcumin was not detected in the liver tissue of patients with liver metastases of colorectal cancer after the same oral dose of curcumin (11), suggesting that oral curcumin administration may not effectively deliver curcumin to tissues outside the gastrointestinal tract.

That is not to say it doesn\'t also have the ability to act in it\'s own right in ways additional to those arising from it\'s role in improving the actions of vitamin D3.

\nI make my own curcumin capsules, using "00" capsules and add one black peppercorn in each capsule.
\n
\nPeppercorns have plenty of "zing" so you know they contain piperine, and you also know there are no added fillers.\r\n

Default Strong link between turmeric and diabetes

ncredible, groundbreaking new research just published in the Journal of the Medical Association of Thailand found that the primary polyphenol in turmeric curcumin is able to repair and even regenerate the liver tissues in diabetic rats.Researchers at the Srinakharinwirot University in Bangkok administered curcumin to rats afflicted with diabetes and whose livers demonstrated the characteristic pathology and destruction of tissues and microvasculature. The curcumin was able to trigger a significant reversal of the condition.

Fascinatingly, liver microvasculature in curcumin treated group developed into regenerate and repair into healthy and normal characteristics, the research team said, in its findings. These results optimistically demonstrated the potential use of curcumin as a novel therapeutic agent in liver pathology of diabetic rats.

The Thai research is just the latest albeit most promising to date research showing a treatment link between curcumin and both forms of diabetes, Type I and Type II.

Earlier research reveals similar findings

Researchers, who published their results in the journal Diabetes Care in July, said they discovered that over nine months, a daily dose of curcumin a compound in curry spice appeared to prevent new cases of diabetes among people with so-called pre-diabetes, or abnormally high blood sugar levels that could eventually progress into full-blown Type II diabetes, which is also linked to obesity.

That study, which was also Thai-based, followed 240 adults with pre-diabetes who were randomly assigned to either take curcumin capsules or a placebo that looked identical but contained no active ingredient, Reuters reported.

After nine months, 19 of the 116 placebo patients had developed Type II diabetes, compared to none of the 119 patients who took the curcumin.
The researchers, led by Dr. Somlak Chuengsamarn of Srinakharinwirot University in Nakornnayok, Thailand, said their findings were an endorsement.

Our study showed that the curcumin extract can effectively prevent the prediabetes population from developing type 2 diabetes mellitus, wrote the research team. Although we found that the results were quite remarkable, a longer trial may be required to see if the curcumin-treated prediabetes population will eventually develop type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Because of its benefits and safety, we propose that curcumin extract may be used for an intervention therapy for the prediabetes population, the team wrote.

One thing experts agree on is that the concentration of curcumin is not the same in each extract or capsule.
In the July Thai study, participants took six capsules a day containing 250 mg each of curcuminoids.

Other health advantages

Last year, the testing company ConsumerLab.com found that 20 percent of curcumin and turmeric supplements it tested failed the companys quality review. And the cost of getting the amount of curcumin used in this study would range from 39 cents to $1.50 per day, depending on the supplement used, Reuters reported.

As for the studys results, Constance Brown-Riggs, a certified diabetes educator and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, said more research was needed but that what had been discovered thus far is compelling, and the good news is there seemed to be minimal adverse effects.

Other health benefits are thought to be linked to this compound, which is one of the most clinically studied ever.

For example, scientists agree that curcumin may have anti-inflammatory properties and may act as an antioxidant, says Discovery Health. Other research is looking into the use of curcumin and turmeric in treating many medical conditions, including Alzheimers disease, high cholesterol and osteoarthritis.

Even if you dont eat a lot of food from certain cultures that use curry, you have likely eaten something with curcumin. If youve had a hot dog with mustard, you have: curcumin gives mustard its distinctive tangy flavor and yellow color.
