So the doctor gave her a blood test and discovered that she has a thyroid that is slightly underactive (hypothyroidism). She has been prescribed the drug Synthroid.

\n1) Can anybody here suggest some good references and resources about Synthroid? I will be doing my own searches, but any personal recommendations would be much appreciated.

\nGood points. Also, if your daughter is open minded at that age, a sushi roll beacuse of the seaweed will supply a fair amount of iodine. Or kelp granules or tablets if she is not open for sushi. Good Luck\r\n

Cabbage contains goitrogens. Goitrogen inhibits the functions of the thyroid. Cooking or steaming foods that contain goitrogen will help to deactivate them. So you can still have these foods.

\nDarn. We have been encouraging her to eat many of the foods on that list. Many of them are important sources of antioxidants. And the soy and peanuts especially are sources of protein. My daughter is a picky eater when it comes to meats, so we have been relying on other sources of protein to ensure her blood sugar levels are more stable-' + '-don\'t get too low. She is getting sick of cheese all the time, so have been encouraging her to eat peanuts and edamame (steamed and salted soy beans). She likes them, so we thought we had solved one problem.\r\n

Well don\'t stop encouraging her. You are right. These foods contain many health benefits. As I said, you just need to ensure that they are cooked or steamed. For example, no cold slaw or broccoli raw. Also, food that has been fermented, like sauerkraut, is the very best, because they contain probiotics. Learn to steam. Vegetables are delicious that way.

\nIf she has been prescribed Synthroid, then she is not just slightly hypoglycemic. For someone so young, a little more iodine in her diet might have been more beneficial. Seaweed and sea salt would be beneficial. There are better sources of protein than soy and peanuts. Lentils are the best among the vegetables. 1 cup is about 18 grams. Whey is a good choice and can be a delicious drink when mixed with other favorite things. Yogurt is very good for protein too. Greek yogurt is a better protein that regular yogurt. Yogurt also includes probiotics. Almonds and almond butter is far better than peanuts. They have similar content, but the quality of protein is better.

\nQuinoa (pronounced �keen-wah�) is a so-called �complete protein� grain. Also, no gluten in this grain. I found some noodles that were made with quinoa. They were as delicious as wheat. Mixed with spaghetti sauce or cheese, any I\'m pretty sure you would like them.\r\n

\r\n \r\n Yes but eliminating some of those veggies is cutting out very potent nutrients. I would not recommend that approach but surely cut out the canola oil and peanuts and soy.. Its the green veggies I would not want anyone to leave behind.

Default Hypothyroidism Treatments?

My seven year old daughter has Type I Diabetes and her last check up indicated that she had not gained weight since her previous check-up. So the doctor gave her a blood test and discovered that she has a thyroid that is slightly underactive (hypothyroidism). She has been prescribed the drug Synthroid.

Now I have two questions:

1) Can anybody here suggest some good references and resources about Synthroid? I will be doing my own searches, but any personal recommendations would be much appreciated.

2) Can anybody here suggest any natural alternatives to this drug? Are any foods known to alleviate hypothyroidism? Are any foods known to be beneficial to the thyroid in particular?
