In many other countries, the sodas have cane sugar as the sweetener. In the US it almost all high fructose corn syrup.

True but while I agree fructose is worse than sugar it's still not a smart idea to use as much refined carbohydrate as we do.
We are facing a global pandemic of diabetes and dementia and we've got to do something radical to avoid it.

Relative Intake of Macronutrients Impacts Risk of Mild Cognitive Impairment or dementia

Exactly the same scenario applies to breast and prostate cancer incidence. We've got to take metabolic syndrome, obesity, elevated glucose, insulin resistance as precusors to diabetes, cancer or dementia seriously.
We all should be aware of the impact of chronic inflammation.
Knowing how refined carbohydrates are providing the biofilm for pathogenic gut flora proliferation that creates the chronic inflammation is the key to changing our behaviour to reduce the chance of these chronic diseases.

Also, as pointed out by Doctor Lustig, fructose is handled differently by the liver as well.

I only wish they would differentiate between fructose from fruit and fructose from corn syrup. The fructose in fruit is accompanied by vitamins and fiber, and does not have the same effect on the body as does corn syrup or table sugar, which is sucrose, and is half glucose and half fructose with no other nutrients. (or fiber)

Most grains are genetically engineered, contain gluten, and are contaminated with fungi. This is a very bad combination, and doesn't even take into account that white flour made from this grain will be broken down into sugar by the body, creating even more health issues.
