Default Brown rice daily?

We've been eating brown rice daily for dinner along with something else and I'm just wondering how healthy or unhealth is it?
I know it's healthier than white rice, but is there anything wrong with eating maybe half a cup of brown rice everyday for dinner

I saw this article, which appears there's a lot of food things with brown rice, but not sure if it has everything.
https://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?t...spice&dbid=128

To be honest, it's easy to cook brown rice with something else like fish instead of making salads and other things, which is the reason we eat brown rice almost every night. Just looking for some feedback and thoughts.

Brown rice in moderation is a healty food. But if you are eating it as a subsitute for fresh veggies that is not a good choice. Rice will not deliver what vegetables can, and salads should be prefered. 5 veggies a day minium are requried. Rice is a better choice than potatoes.

No single food has everything... and variety is the spice of life and nutrition.

You might want to look at subsituting brown rice with quiona on occassion..or amanarath or mix them with the rice. Play with it.

Some people here are really against the carb value of brown rice. I say it all depends on your metabolizm. For some people it will pack on pounds and or others it won't and of course it will depend on how big a serving is eaten also. Some people need the carbs to maintain weight.

Like Arrowwind09 rice is no substitute for fresh veg. Brown rice is good for you but including fresh veg with every meal is important to give you the vitamins you need.

To make your brown rice more nutritious soak it overnight in filtered water and some kind of acid to break down the phytic acid. Phytic acid prevents the body from absorbing certain nutrients.

When I first heard of soaking brown rice before cooking I thought, "What a hassle. I'll never do that." Now I've been soaking my rice for a few years. It's easy and the rice is easier to digest.

When soaking brown rice add 2 cups of filtered water to 1 cup of rice. Add 1 tablespoon of acid per cup of water used. You can use apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, cultured buttermilk, kefir, or whey as a acid in your soaking.

I have a Japanese friend who does not consider a meal complete without at least a cup of white rice. No kidding. Every day. Her family and parents too.

I have a Vietnamese friend who grew up on practically nothing but rice. Whole town was poor. I suspect it was brown or wild rice.

It's ironic how the thinnest people I know eat a lot of rice, yet it's bad for you. I guess it's probably the portions they eat as well.

I have to try quiona as I don't think I've ever had it to be honest.

I would mix it up a bit. I don't know what your personal ideal is for fat, protein, and carbs in your daily diet but if you're using the brown rice as a carb source it's a great choice. On alternative nights cook a bag of frozen veggies instead (fresh is even better), fresh salad, squash, peas, beans, onion soup, waldorf salad...oh, don't get me started.

believe it or not I try to watch my carbs, excluding rice I don't pie it on, but a small quarter of a cup maybe half at most. It's not daily for sure, but a lot of nights for dinner.

Well, a quarter of cup or so is very, very small. Sounds like you have a pretty good diet. When rice is soaked overnight the seeds actually germinate if they haven't aeen parboiled. Rice has a little phytic acid but not as much as oats and other grains.

My hubby lost 20 pounds and has kept it off for the past 4 years since we stopped eating processed food BUT he is now underweight and needs more carbs in his diet. He's 6'1'' and 145 lbs.

We use SunWest California All Natural Organic Harvest Medley. It's a mixture of CalMati Brown Rice, Wild Rice, Sweet Brown Rice and Heirloom Red Rice. We like it a lot, and sometimes use organic chicken broth instead of water for added flavor.

For 1/4 cup serving it's 150 cal., 1.5g fat 0 Sat and 0 Trans, cholesterol 0, sodium 0, total carbs 35g (12%), fiber 4g, sugars 0, protein 5g.

Does it taste better or worse when you soak the rice?

That rice sounds like a really good mix, I'll have to see if we can find it somewhere.

We go to a resturant that serves black rice, which comes out purple, but havne't been able to find it at the local stores. We have an asian side of town that I haven't had a chance to go there and see if they sell it there, but we really like the taste of this rice as well.

Almost all white rice is processed and the valuable and nutritive rice bran is removed. This is what most Japanese and vietnamese people eat. It is a denatured food and not nearly as good for you as brown rice. White rice is brown rice with the bran removed.

They feed the rice bran to cattle and starving kids in Africa and race horses.

Oh, it doesn't affect the taste. It makes cooking time shorter though.

Brown boiled rice a cup a day, no sugar or milk added then, is all my dad had to live on for 3 years when he was a Changi prisoner of the second world war, and he always loved his rice, till the day he died,if anything else wandered into the prison camp eg frogs or animals they never got out alive as they were eaten too.

Sweet potatoes are easy to cook & would be a yummy, nutritious alternative.

Other than baking them with skins on, another way is to boil them. When tender (fork test) peel, mash on plate & sprinkle with cinnamon.

Another.. boil, let them cool overnight in the frige. Coat a frying pan with either olive oil or butter. Peel potatoes, cut into 1/2 inch circles & brown on both sides.
Sprinkle with sea salt & pepper (this is my fav )
