Default Daflon 500 for Chronic Venous Insufficency, Hemorrhoids

I've been finding out about this medicine that is commonly used in Mexico. I had the opportunity to talk to a Mexican physican about it and he was astounded to hear that this drug is not used in the United States for patients with venous insufficiency, vericose veins, hemorrhoids.... well, at least to my knowledge it is not used, and finding info on it in English took extra time

Daflon is micronized diosmin and Hesperdin, a bioflavinoid extract containing 90% diosmin and 10% hesperidin, which This medicaiton is currently used to treat chronic venous insufficiency and haemorrhoidal disease, with decerease improving swelling, inflammation and size of vericosities. This micronized preparation allows for greater permeability though out the vasular system than other preparations of hesperidin may provide. It is known for improving venous tone and improving lymphatic drainage.

This product contains micronized 90% diosmin and 10% hesperidin, both bioflavinoids from natural sources. The doctor told me that it is generally prescribed with an anti-inflamatory medication like voltran (an NSAID) well regarded due to its lessor poisoning effects than Ibuprofen. Both medications are over the counter.

This looks like a promising treatment and has been well regarded in Europe and Mexico.

Daflon supplement benefit and side effects by Ray Sahelian, M.D.

Daflon is an oral medicine used in the treatment of venous disease, ie, chronic venous disease and hemorrhoids. It is a micronized purified flavonoid fraction containing 90% diosmin and 10% flavonoids expressed as Hesperidin.

Daflon for venous leg ulcer
Angiology. 2005. Smith PC. Department of Surgery, UCL Medical School, The Middlesex Hospital, London, UK. Daflon 500 mg and venous leg ulcer: new results from a meta-analysis.
The objective of this study was to assess the effect of oral treatment with Daflon 500 mg (micronized purified flavonoid fraction [MPFF]) on leg ulcer healing. This study was conducte. Five prospective, randomized, controlled studies in which 723 patients with venous ulcers were treated between 1996 and 2001 were identified. Conventional treatment (compression and local care) in addition to Daflon 500 mg 2 tablets daily was compared with conventional treatment plus placebo in two studies (n = 309), or with conventional treatment alone in three studies (n = 414). These results confirm that venous ulcer healing is accelerated by Daflon 500 mg treatment. Daflon 500 mg might be a useful adjunct to conventional therapy in large and longstanding ulcers that might be expected to heal slowly.

Daflon for hemorrhoids
Daflon for hemorrhoids: a prospective, multi-centre observational study.
Surgeon. 2004. Meshikhes AW. Department of Surgery, Dammam Central Hospital, Dammam, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia.
Daflon, a phlebotropic agent, is of proven efficacy in the treatment of various venous disorders. Although Daflon has been tried in the treatment of hemorrhoids, its efficacy in alleviating various haemorrhoidal symptoms has not been assessed properly. The aim of this study was to confirm the efficacy of Daflon in the treatment of haemorrhoidal symptoms. Two hundred and sixty eight patients presenting with hemorrhoids were recruited. This was a multicentre non-randomised observational study with no placebo arm. After establishing the extent of their symptoms and determining the position, size and degree of haemorrhoids by proctoscopy, all patients were started on Daflon, four tablets per day, in two divided doses for four weeks. Patients were seen weekly during the study period and carefully questioned as regard to symptoms, and a proctoscopy was carried out. There was a statistically significant improvement in all haemorrhoidal symptoms (pain, heaviness, bleeding, pruritus and anal discharge) and in the proctoscopic appearance of the 'piles,' comparing baseline visit findings with the last visit four weeks after treatment with Daflon. Daflon has been shown to be effective in alleviating (variable degree) haemorrhoidal symptoms and improving the proctoscopic appearance of hemorrhoids. Therefore, it should be considered initially for patients presenting with haemorrhoidal symptoms.

Daflon side effects
Q. From couple of days I am taking daflon 500mg (two tablets daily) for pre-anal haematoma or haemorrhoid. I am feeling headache, nausea. I wanted to know whether the above side effects are due to daflon or some other reason?
A. I have not used Daflon in my practice yet and do not know the answer at this time but I will keep my eyes open for new research. You may wish to stop the daflon supplement for a few days and restart with one tablet to see if the symptoms occur. Let us know how it goes and if the side effects occur with one Daflon tablet.

Daflon supplement emails
Hello, I'm from Florida USA. I'm looking for a medicine called Daflon. I been looking everywhere here in Florida but no one knows that medicine.
Hi, we are not aware of it being sold in the US, but we have not looked extensively.

My mother lives in Tehran, she is 87 years old, but in good health, except she is in pain with hemorrhoids. She has been trying to locate the medicine but she has not been successful. Where this drug is made? If it is in Europe, I have friends there, which can purchase and send to her. Or can I place order with a company in Europe and have them send it to her?
A google search reveals a company called Jandrugs dot com carries this product.

Composition
Daflon 500 consists of 450 mg of diosmin and 50 mg of hesperidin. Hesperidin comes from a variety of orange that is popular in China and Spain. The drug is different from other diosmins because of the presence of flavonoids.

Treatments
Patients with chronic venous conditions that result in heaviness of the lower limbs, cramps and pain are treated with Daflon 500. It is also given to patients who suffer from hemorrhoids. The drug eases the pain and takes away the discomfort the patient feels.

Side Effects
Some side effects from taking the drug include gastrointestinal problems and some minor problems in the nervous system. Special precaution must be taken for women who are pregnant or lactating.
