Novel vitamin D treatment for Inflammatory Breast Cancer

\r\n \r\n It\'s great to have evidence that Vitamin D3 in it\'s active hormonal form, fights breast cancer effectively. But it is typical of modern science and modern medicine that it has to be packaged in a patented high tech mechanism before it becomes available for consensus medical opinion.

\r\nSome of us here have been pointing out the connection between low vitamin D status and cancer mortality for many years and still most people with cancer don\'t get their 25(OH)D levels raised to 125nmol/l or 50ng/ml at which level it is most efficient as controlling inflammation, particularly when used in conjunction with omega 3 and magnesium.

\r\n I hope everyone reads it and follows the links and then takes appropriate action to ensure not only vitamin D, magnesium, omega 3 levels are kept optimal but also that refined carbohydrates and sugars intakes are reduced.\r\n

There would be no scientific research, if it was not going to become financially lucrative. Very few labs are philanthropic or altruistic. So, I like it when there are clinical or scientific studies that confirm, at least partially, what the naturopathic community has known for a long time. It\'s confirmation of sorts.\r\n

Nature\'s Way

\r\n \r\n A piece of research I came across last week indicated that low vitamin D levels can significantly reduce the effectiveness of tamoxifen at the standard dose. (Apparently it is currently prescribed in a one-size-fits-all dosage.) In addition, a common antidepressant (they didn\'t say which) can have a similar effect. A summary of the research can be found here. Since many women have very low vitamin D levels - I saw a comment by one doctor that this had reached "epidemic" levels - this may be yet another reason to have one\'s vitamin D levels tested. Low vitamin D levels may help cause depression also.

\r\n \r\n There was a study done of mid-eastern women; since they are not allowed to expose their skin in public, the incidence of breast cancer is higher there than other places. I think this further demonstrates the effective Vitamin D has on our health especially where breast cancer is concerned.

\nConventional doctors, unless given some scientific study and a drug that results from the study, will not consider something as simple as telling a patient to use Vitamin D. I recall my daughter taking it and told by her oncologist vitamins are useless and a waste of money. We are talking about a top oncologist at a NYC cancer center. It is disappointing but expected.\r\n

This is where science really shines. Especially interesting that vitamin D3 is the weapon.

Philadelphia, Pa. � The shortened daylight of a Maine winter may make for long, dark nights � but it has shone a light on a novel experimental approach to fighting inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), an especially deadly form of breast cancer.
The new approach enlists the active form of Vitamin D3, called calcitriol, which is delivered therapeutically by quantum dots. Quantum dots are an engineered light-emitting nanoscale delivery vehicle. This new preliminary work shows the dots can be used to rapidly move high concentrations of calcitriol to targeted tumor sites where cancer cells accumulate, and also through the lymph system where the cancer spreads. With this approach, the calcitriol can fight on multiple fronts and the targeted location can be visualized with an imaging system tracking the quantum dots. The research will be presented at the 57th Annual Meeting of the Biophysical Society (BPS), held Feb. 2-6, 2013, in Philadelphia, Pa.
University of Delaware cancer researcher Anja Nohe was living in Maine when she first received funding from the Maine Cancer Foundation to determine the effect of calcitriol on breast cancer cells. Reading cancer literature helped her make connections between cancer, vitamin D, and the daylight regime of higher latitudes. "By talking with talented colleagues about these ideas, the foundation was set for the current project," she says. After moving to the University of Delaware, she began working with Kenneth Van Golen, "an expert in the biology of IBC," to evaluate calcitriol.
Compared to other forms of breast cancer, IBC is especially difficult to treat. It has a five-year survival rate of 40% versus 87% for all other breast cancers. A big part of what makes IBC treatment difficult is its multi-site growth pattern. Current aggressive treatments such as combinations of chemotherapy, surgery and radiation, have failed to significantly improve IBC survival rates.
This early experimental work on mice is encouraging because data show calcitriol can inhibit invasion and migration of SUM149 cells, an IBC cell line. "New IBC therapies are urgently needed, which is why the goal of my work is to find a successful treatment for inflammatory breast cancer, especially one with fewer side effects," Nohe says.
