I have heard the statistics for folks over 50 with high cholesterol has no relation to cardiac risk. Not sure if their are any studies to correlate low cholesterol with alzhiemers and other forms of dementia but it seems like there is good anecdotal reasons to believe in such a relation

Association between serum cholesterol and noncardiovascular mortality in older age.
Quote:
Higher total cholesterol was associated with a lower risk of noncardiovascular mortality in older adults. This association varied across the late-life span and was stronger in older age groups. .... each 1-mmol/L increase in total cholesterol was associated with an approximately 12% lower risk of noncardiovascular mortality
Foods that promote a healthy cholesterol level are those that contain choline
Cholesterol — Your Life Depends on It!
Remember drugs like Aricept work for Dementia patients by prolonging the action of choline in the brain. Rather than lose your brain function and then using expensive drugs to slow further degeneration, it's a smart move to keep feeding your brain choline (egg yolks/ liver) while you still retain cognitive function.
You can't make vitamin D without having a reasonable amount of 7 dehydroCHOLESTEROL in your skin. Prevent cholesterol and you prevent 7dehydroCHOLESTEROL and therefore prematurely age your skin and brain.

What matters ultimately is ALL CAUSE MORTALITY.
