Default Is krill oil superior to fish oil?

https://www.thorne.com/altmedrev/.fulltext/9/4/420.pdf

Does anyone know anything about this from personal experience?

Default starting it tomorrow

Ruby,

I'll be starting a course of krill oil therapy (1 gram a day) beginning tomorrow. I'll let you know what effects, if any, I find to be true ... in my case.

Be well,

HH

Ruby,

I just started Krill Oil (Jarrow brand) a week ago. I'm taking it because it is supposed to help with cholesterol levels, so it will be several months before I know if it has been of any help. Will post results later.

The information I read about Krill Oil was from Vitamin Research Products---several excellent articles. Go to:

Hi Mari & Harry,

NKO seems very expensive to me. Do you pay a good price for yours? It seemed to me that taking 5-10 gm/dy of fish oil might be more economical as a good source of EPA and DHA. I'm not sure why NKO would be worth the extra expense.

I would also like to ask what are you going to be monitoring to determine if it's working for you? If it is cholesterol, could you say what your starting TC is?

Harry, I was wondering which brand of NKO you would be trying.

Hope you don't mind all the questions, but I'm very interested in NKO.

Lab Rat,

NKO is expensive. No doubt about it. There are less expensive brands (one of them is linked below) but I'm going to stick with the brand that's got the most research behind it (sold under many different brands: Jarrow, Nature's Way, Mercola's brand, etc.).

least expensive brand (I've seen):

https://www.vitacost.com/NSIKRIAXanthinAntarcticKrillOil

general information about krill oil:

https://www.mercola.com/products/krill_oil.htm

In short, krill oil is thought to be more bioavailable (due to it's natural phospholipid content), more stable (due to it's natural antioxidant content), safer (because lower dosages are necessary and because it's naturally free of PCB's and heavy metals - so it doesn't have to go through the same purification process that fish oil does) and more diverse in it's overall health effects (probably due to the two reasons I mentioned above).

I'll determine if it's working for me in several ways: 1) will it affect my cholesterol levels (primarily in regard to my HDL cholesterol), 2) will it help manage my inflammation, 3) will it affect my overall outlook (mood). I'll be on the lookout for other benefits but those are probably my top three indicators.

At the moment, I'm using this brand of NKO:

https://www.papanature.com/store/Prod...&pid=NWY-15432 (I usually get a discount ... on last order, they took off 7.5% - as a volume discount I believe).

This may be the best overall price (from a reputable source):

https://tinyurl.com/lltvx

I don't buy this particular product from Swanson Vitamins because I'm on the opposite coast (they're stationed in North Carolina) and I don't like to have oil-based products shipped over several days in potentially hot weather.

I hope this answered most of your questions. Let me know if you've got others ...

Be well,

HH

Thanks Harry,

That was great info! If you don't get a commission, you should. I do appreciate all of your time and effort with my questions. Once again, I'm in your debt. Will be looking forward to hearing about your progress.

If Im not mistaken, which I probably am, Swansons should be located in Fargo, North Dakota. At least thats where all of my shipments originate. If there is any ocean front property there, I dont think Ill be investing in it. But, I definately can understand your wish to protect the oil from heat. Wouldnt it be also exposed to heat during shipment and warehousing from Neptune Technologies and Bioresources in Laval, Quebec, Canada all the way to Papanature in Irwindale, CA USA? <--<<<rhetorical question, no answer necessary

I'm really interested in Krill, but it is a crustaecion and
I had a nasty reaction to shell fish some years ago in
Florida. Wound up hospitalized for a couple days.

I'll be following your reports, and maybe I'll jump in
if I feel confident that no reaction is coming.

Jack,

From the VRP articles I sited above:

Because Neptune Krill Oil is derived from seafood, those with seafood allergies should use NKO with caution, or after suitable allergy testing. Those taking anticoagulant medication, or who suffer from extreme bleeding conditions, should use Neptune Krill Oil only with medical supervision.

Perhaps you need to be careful about trying this.

Default krill

Hi all,
DH and I have been on krill oil for 3 months now, after over a year on Carlson's fish oil.

The only effect fish oil had on my lipids was to raise my LDL by 41 pts.

DH is not due for blood work yet. He is on Warfarin, and has a PTT test once a month. His blood actually got a little bit thicker on krill oil than it had been on fish oil, but only .1, which is not much.

I had my last blood work done only one month after starting the krill oil, so I am hoping for even better results next time I have blood drawn. It lowered my total cholesterol by 42 pts. It lowered my LDL by 27 pts. It raised my HDL by 5 pts. It lowered my triglycerides by 83 pts., and it lowered my FBS by 13 pts. My Cardiologist was amazed.
