Default question for Harry and Iggy: anti-aging formula

ok.. I'm going to ask the resident experts about what combination of supplements are good for a woman/man who sees the horizon getting closer...

I saw the magnesium "anti-aging" post. and I remember vitamin C being important for collagen, etc.

so.. what other anti-aging supplements would you recommend? how about vitamin D?

what would be a good "combo" for helping those who are hearing the drums of time beating a bit louder these days?

ST,

I'll try to answer your question, in more detail, later.

I think all the nutrients you mentioned (magnesium, C, D) are often lacking as we age. But, they can often be attained (largely) by diet and sunshine exposure. Other substances, like acetyl-l-carnitine and alpha lipoic acid are more scarce in our food supply/environment.

Here's a link that provides a pretty thorough analysis of many of the changes, that often often come with aging, that be addressed through supplementation.

https://qualitycounts.com/

IMO, many of the recommendations made, on the site linked above, can also be achieved through other means - if one has the discipline. For instance, DHEA can be increased and cortisol can be decreased, by meditating. No need to supplement with DHEA or any adaptogen.

Another example would be consuming berries and bone broth instead of supplementing with high-amounts of vitamin C. The berries protect collagen and the broth provides (non-vitamin C) building-blocks to promote collagen production. Ideally, vitamin C supplementation would be combined with these healthy diet tips.

I'll add more later ...

Here's one supplement that provides a pretty solid anti-aging combination. It's light in a few ingredients but the price is reasonable and it's easy-to-take:

Make sure to scroll-down to the bottom of the (linked) page.

thanks, Harry. I'm taking the GH-3.. but to be honest.. I don't see that much of a difference. don't know if I will continue it.

maybe I will try this next.. I like the idea that it is all in one dose. I'm not as organized as some as far as taking pills.

and.. I'm making bone broth today. I always know when it is time to make bone broth because my husband timer starts squawking "You have the whole friggin' freezer filled up with these bones... there is hardly any room left - there's no more room for any more bones!!!!".

BEEP BEEP SQUAWK SQUAWK.. time to make broth.. (who needs a calendar?)

ST,

I threw the VitaCost product out there because I think it's a good, generalized anti-aging product. It's provides a decent balance between convenience, cost and composition.

When I try to put together supplement programs for friends and family members ... the better the program is ... the more complicated it is. And that often isn't acceptable for the people I'm trying to help.

Heck, even my own supplement program is pretty complicated. I wish it weren't so but it's hard to find the "right" balance of what I think I need.

Anyhow, to answer your initial questions:

I think these supplements are worth considering (this is not a comprehensive list):

I think most people would benefit from more:

1. Magnesium - The best form, IMO, would be the magnesium taurinate form. It not only provides magnesium but the taurine helps to manage blood pressure, raise HDL cholesterol and may prevent/improve irregular heartbeats. Magnesium citrate is less-expensive and effective but lacks the taurine-effect.

https://www.vitacost.com/NSI-Magnesium-Taurinate

2. CoQ10

3. Vitamin K2 - I'd go with the MK-7 form.

https://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails.aspx?c=1&pid=256

4. Fish Oil

5. B-Complex - Vitacost has an excellent product that provides extra thiamine (B-1) and high-levels of B12 in the methylcobalamin form.

https://www.vitacost.com/NSI-Vitamin-B-Complex

6. Mitochondrial support - Vitacost also has a good product that contains alpha lipoic acid, carnitine, CoQ10 and more that help to combat decreased cellular energy that occurs with aging.

https://www.vitacost.com/NSI-Mitochon...00-mg-of-CoQ10

7. Vitamin D - unless you get adequate sun-exposure.

8. Vitamin C - spread-out as best as possible

9. Multivitamin/mineral - to cover the basics (selenium, zinc, vitamin A, E, etc.)

10. Pycnogenol, Pomegranate and Green Tea. There's excellent research to support their use for aging and far-beyond.

11. Possibly Resveratrol. If it works, at the dosages provided, it could be very beneficial.

I'm sure I'm leaving out other worthy candidates. But, hopefully this is at least a start.

Wow!! this is very detailed. Thanks a lot, Harry.

As I've said before... I really don't take many supplements. a multivitamin (when I remember), and that gh-3. I've been more into trying to tweak my diet. which I think I do pretty well. I probably could eat more vegetables.. but other than that, I do pretty well.

but, I think I'm going to try taking something regularly - see if I feel any different. so, .. I was looking for a plan. boy.. this sure gives me one! I really appreciate this, Harry. Thanks! (glad I asked!)

I second Harry's recs. I take most of them.
I also heard on a weird site that Maca was antiaging, so I add that to my drink.
I would also advise against eating most processed foods.
Walking is probably the #1 antiaging ingredient.

The LEF product doesn't state how much of the K2 is in the MK-4 and MK-7 forms. The total, of vitamin K2, is 1,000 mcg - for both forms. But, how much of each is present?

There's a product from Carlson that provides 5 mg of K2 but it's not in the MK7 form.

I am by far not one of the experts here, but what about progesteron... I happened across a show on one of the christian channels the other day talking about progesteron..... According to the doctor on the show... progesteron (am I spelling that right?) is lacking in most of us, and it necessary for the anti aging process.. Unfortunately, I dont know anything about the show, so this is all heresay info!!!

just me,

This site provides a lot of information about progesterone:

https://www.johnleemd.com/

Some people swear by it ... when it's used in an appropriate form and manner.
