Default Better than whole foods:

Trader Joes: Tons of organic products at great prices.

Don't have a Trader Joes nearby, but even the Vitamin Cottage/Natural Grocers is better than Whole Foods, IMO. When I wanted to make a natural trail mix, I went to WF, because I figured they'd have a better selection of dried coconut, pineapple, cherries, pumpkin seeds, cranberries, etc. Well, was a waste of time for me, just went back to my local VC.

Also, the sweet things at WF, that aren't so healthy, are not only overpriced, but each time I've tried something it was either stale or poor taste/quality. Not a Whole Foods fan here, prices far too high for quality and value.

Will check out Trader Joes when I get a chance.

I've been to the trader joes in Houston....very recently. It is nowhere near as good as whole foods....or even central market.

there were a few things that were good and decently priced.
fluoride free toothpaste...for 2.29....but the it tastes like licorice...

dark chocolate almonds....1.5 pounds for 6.99....

other than that.....whole foods blows trader joes out of the water....and its much bigger than trader joes.

The trader joes in cleveland is bad, but the ones in Pittsburgh are fanatastic. K2C has a valid poinmt about whole foods though: you have to read every label and many things are overpriced.

I think this must be a regional issue though about wf vs. tj.

At trader joes, there are alot of things with corn syrup and other junk in them. So, you should read labels everywhere. The selection at trader joes (in houston) is no where near that of whole foods or even Central Market in Houston.

WF is like any other big chain; Shop for the loss leaders. I've bought organic apples at WF for $0.99 a pound recently.

TJ's has one pound packs of Brazil nuts for $6.99. WF is $13 in the bulk section. Much nicer to have the pack knowing they're fresher.

I miss Trader Joes, since I moved to the Austin area. Austin is the HQ for WF. I really prefer a huge Texas grocer, called H.E.B. I shop a lot at Organic Grocers which hosts Vitamin Cottage.

I miss the unique items at Trader Joes. They use to carry rose water, that was excellent to dribble over salads. They introduced me to several health products. I also remember a wonderful frozen item - crab stuffed salmon. I do wish they would open a store here.

JFH: your inner greek is coming out. You can get rose water at greek or lebanese stores. Or always mail order.
