Doctor Otto Heinrich Warburg discovered the root cause of cancer in 1923, for which he received the Nobel Prize (medicine) in 1931.

He stated "cancerous cells are acidic, whereas healthy cells are alkaline".

"Water splits into H+ and OH- ions". "If there is an excess of H+ ions it is acidic, and if there is an excess of OH- ions, then it is alkaline".

"All forms of cancer have two basic characteristics; acidosis and hypoxia (lack of oxygen)". "Where you have one, you have the other".

"If you deprive a cell 35% of its oxygen for 48 hours, it may become cancerous".

"Cancer cells cannot survive in the presence of high levels of oxygen".

Ah, yes - The "Warburg Hypothesis" of tumor genesis.

The problem with an hypothesis is that it demands further research over time for validation and ultimate acceptance by the scientific community. Since the early 1920s when Warburg did his work, the volume of research performed in the field of cancer causes has produced literally mountains of data which reveals much more about cancer causes beyond what Warburg reported. There are a great many potential cancer causes and risk factors:

- Genetics (heredity, oncogenes)
- Advanced age - telomere failure promotes mutation
- Immune system failure
- Chronic inflammation
- Diet
- Tobacco use
- Alchohol use
- Over exposure to the sun
- Over exposure to X-Rays
- Exposure to radioactive sources
- Exposure to hundreds (maybe thousands) of carcinogenic chemicals and particulates in the environment or workplaces
- Certain infectious agents - Viruses in particular

While Dr. Warburg certainly was one of the most prominent medical researchers of his era, it is likely that what he observed was not the cause of cancer itself but the effects at the physiological cellular level of other causes of cancer.
