It can be dangerous and can cause kidney failure. Which means that high potassium can be caused by kidney problems, diet, and also lupus. How high is high? It depends, because the body is very good at balancing electrolytes. It will use sodium to balance this. Why are you asking? Are you wondering how high potassium occurs?

I once had a girlfriend that had Addison's disease due to lack of a hormone. She balanced that by consuming a lot of sodium. Sodium is the balancing agent.

Could be a bad lab test too.

Too high will cause heart fluctuations and can even stop your heart.

my husband had some tests and one docter said it was a little high but not to worry...then he was sent to a vascular doctor(because of neck and ankle pain) he agreed it was a little high and would recheck it.(the potassium)

a couple days later my husband ate a banana and got sick..i was looking on the net and thought he might have an allergy to bananas. He has thyroid (low) desease........at one time a doctor told him to bananas...the last year or so he has gone over board sometimes and ate as much as 4/5 day.He dicontinued bananas and doesnt have a doctors appointment till jan.....he now does not have the neck pain or the ankle....coincidence or what....?

I don't know what the pain is all about in relation to potassium, but bananas have a lot of sugar as well as a lot of potassium. I'm allergic to bananas too, but my problem with them is constipation. That is a surprise, because I've heard they are good for constipation especially due to the fiber. These things just affect people in different ways.

Sodium does balance the potassium though. And potassium balances too much sodium.
