Default Appendix May Protect "Good" Germs

Quote:
Some scientists think they have figured out the real job of the troublesome and seemingly useless appendix: It produces and protects good germs for your gut.

That's the theory from surgeons and immunologists at Duke University Medical School, published online in a scientific journal this week.

I read an article that stated that people had no problems with their appendix becoming inflamed before the advent of the "porcelain throne" for our daily duty. Apparently people who use a squatter toilet have little problem.

I've seen squatters advertised but have never tried them. So far, my appendix is doing just fine - thankfully!

I suppose they might be health-promoting devises but I wonder how necessary they really are.

I'm trying to keep my/our lives as "normal" as possible - while still being a health-nut. It's a delicate balance.

Default Appendix

I've used a porcelain potty all my life - 72 yrs, and
still have my appendix. All 4 of my grown children still
have their's too, tho one daughter had her gallbladder
removed. All of my 9 grandchildren still have their appendix
too. ALL have used indoor plumbing all of their lives.

I think it may have more to do w/heredity and/or what
people eat.

Whoever started the myth that the appendix was useless?

I could imagine some evolutionist who just did not know better.

Even in the '70s as a high school student, I was already taught that the appendix was essential in immune function, being filled up with lymphoid tissues in its lining. This was further confirmed in my college education. Lymphocytes are part of the immune system, recognizing foreign matter and building up appropriate responses. It's no different from another "useless" lymphoid tissue, our tonsils.

The only reason we get "appendicitis" is if our immune system is overcome, most likely by wrong nutrition, and probably other factors. We don't call our tonsils useless these days, even if many get tonsillitis, do we?

Default Tonsils

For as long as I can remember, tonsils were considered
expendable, and causing lots of pain and infections in
children especially. Usually removed along w/the adenoids
if there were repeated bouts w/earaches.
Mine were removed at age 3, same w/at least 3 of my 4
children, due to repititious earaches and infections.

Is this another case of, "We've come a long way, Baby?"

The appendectomy epidemic went away when hospitals learned that gallbladder surgery was more profitable.
Now gb surgery has been nudged out by heart bypass.
