\r\n \r\n since I have started to officially try to lose weight, I have began to learn a few things about my body, and eating habits..... I have wondered about these discoveries of mine, and have wondered if anyone else has seen these problems and/or truths(for lack of a better word)
\nI have discovered, that when I eat highly processed carbs, like bread, pizza or that almond mocha cheesecake today, that:
\n1. I get real tired
\n2. I get brain fog
\n3. my ankles and feet swell
\n4. my back starts hurting
\n5. my whole body seems to get stiff and sore
\n6. I get fever blisters.
\n7. I get cyst, usually around my private areas.
\n8. I have a hard time staying asleep at night
\n9. They make my chocolate days (period time) worse
\n10. I am more hungry
\n11. Once I start eating these types of carbs, I cant quit for the whole day
\n12. I always have severe headaches during the night, and will wake up with terrible headaches.
\n13 I have no energy, cant get anything done, have trouble even getting out of my chair.
\n14. I have a hard time driving, because I cant stay awake, and sort of zone out, while driving
\n15... when I made my list of all the things that these carbs do to me, my daughter added on the bottom of the list, "they make you bitchy"
\nSo apparently according to children, when I eat alot of these types carbs, I have mood problems
\n
\nI have also noticed, in these past few weeks, that when I eat these types of carbs, I have no desire to go exercise.... when I dont eat them, I cant wait to go to the gym or the track.... Without these carbs, I enjoy getting up early and going to the gym for a half hour, and then enjoy my evening walk at the track in the evening.....
\nBut I have also noticed, that its easier to walk on the tredmill, then on the track.....why is that????
\n
\nI have also noticed, that yes, I believe that taking the oil (shangra-la diet) actually does cut down my appetite, when I remember to take it.... I dont seem hungry... now if I can just stop the habit of putting food in my mouth out of boredom...
\n
\nI have also noticed, that taking magnesium keeps me from having those chocolate cravings right before period time (hence my calling them chocolate days)
\nI have noticed too, that taking vitamin c helps to reduce my sweets cravings.... where did I read that, does anyone know???

\nI have noticed lately, (and dont really want to experiment on it) that when I had accidently stepped on an ant hill last week, and when I got ants all over my hands the other day, that even though these fire ants were biting me, I did not show any signs of bites..... could this actually be because I havent been eating any processed carbs lately??? Or is there maybe something in vit C or the kefir that stops the poison from festering up.....

\nAnd I have noticed that even though the scales show that I am not losing pounds, my clothes fit better, and my whole attitude feels skinnier... does that make sense????

\nSo, it seems that there were more discoveries, that I was going to share with you, but a family friend came into town today bearing gifts of shipleys kolachys, and the almond mocha cheesecake, that I of course couldnt turn down....( boy do I wish I did now... I hurt bad..... someone needs to discover a way to remember the pain, so we arent foolish enough to keep going back to it) But I cant remember what the other ones were, I had a larger list yesterday..... But so my question is, do other people have these problems when eating carbs or processed foods... is it the processed foods, or is it the carbohydrates that causes the problems..... What have all of you others that have stopped the carbs discovered about getting off of them..... My curiosity is aroused, I wonder, what would have happend if I found all this information years ago... and of course I wonder, how long will it take me to have the strength to say no, when someone brings them little nasties into my house!!!!!\r\n

\r\n \r\n Today my husband and I ate lunch at Arby\'s. Something we rarely ever do anymore. Anyway this evening my husband said he has a headache - most likely from the "food" he had at lunch - roast beef sandwich, fries, and root beer. One of his co-workers treated with ice cream in the afternoon at work. So he was loaded up with junk food.
\r\n
\r\nI had the same thing for lunch, but no ice cream in the afternoon. I felt slow and sluggish, took a nap, and am still dragging. I think junk food doesn\'t agree with me so well.
\r\n
\r\nI know for a fact, my son gets real ssssssslllllooooww when he gets too much sugar/proccessed foods.
\r\n
\r\nAs you keep on eating well, you will begin to feel better all the time. Then it will be harder to eat the junk because you will remember how bad it makes you feel. I can\'t say for sure how long it took us to become comfortable in our new eating habits. But it will happen. Even our children will say something about how the foods we used to eat and thought they were good, now taste yucky! I was surprised by my oldest son, when grandma baked a cake-mix cake, especially for him, and he told me later "It wasn\'t even good!" (I use all whole wheat flour in anything I bake)
\r\n
\r\nOne tip I found to help me with the mindless eating - when I was bored or whatever, I prepared carrot and celery sticks, put them in my fridge, and said to myself, "If I\'m hungry - I\'ll eat these!" It did help when I really felt like munching on something - and when I really wasn\'t hungry, they weren\'t appealing like the cookies or pretzels would have been.
\r\n
\r\nAs you begin to feel better and look better - it gets easier to stick with the good eating. You feel better about yourself! Keep up the good work! It sure is worth it!\r\n

\r\n \r\n Just me, what a wonderful post! It\'s so good to learn how people discover the dangers of junk food. I often long to get on a soapbox just to rant about proper food.
\r\nSharon\'s post is so valuable. Husband and I have been eating local organic food ONLY for some time now. One of the first things we noticed about real food, is that it tastes so much better. It has substance, and flavour.
\r\n
\r\nEven eating an organic lettuce leaf feels more like a food than it\'s supermarket counterpart, and we don\'t need so much food for our appetites to be satisfied. We have lost weight and feel better than when we ate in the old way.
\r\n
\r\nDrinks too - in the heat of this summer I needed some water but only bottles of the Coke and Fanta type were on sale in one place. I bought a bottle because I had to drink something, but the taste - Oh yuk! The sugar content made my mouth feel awful, and the flavourings were nothing more than a kid\'s chemistry set.
\r\n
\r\nWhen we want snacks we eat nuts and raisins, or a rice cake with cheese, or fruit. WE just don\'t buy cakes, cookies or snacks of that kind, so we have to eat what\'s in the house or go without. It\'s a bit spartan sometimes, but we wouldn\'t change back to the old unhealthy ways.

\r\nso many articles against the Atkin\'s diet that I cannot
\r\neven count them. Paid for, I\'m sure, by the processed
\r\ncarb industry.

\r\nNowhere in his writings, (I have ALL of his books) does
\r\nhe advocate eliminating carbs.
\r\n
\r\nBecause carbs come in two sizes, natural and processed,
\r\nhis opponents have a field day with the general public\'s
\r\nincredible lack of knowledge of simple nutrition.
\r\n
\r\nTake your carbs in the natural form of fruit, berries, veggies
\r\nand you\'ll feel and look great. As close to raw as you can.
\r\n
\r\nYou only need a small amount (6 ounces) of protien/day
\r\nto stay healthy. (More is not going to hurt you, but your
\r\nsystem gets overloaded with it\'s processing duties.)
\r\n
\r\nEat well, ignore the press about diets and thumb your nose
\r\nat the rest of the sickly world.
\r\n
\r\nI\'m not insensitive to people with weight related problems,
\r\nonly realistic. Our attempts to explain this simple theory
\r\nALWAYS meets with skepticism.
\r\n
\r\nEven after someone comments on how good my wife and/or
\r\nI look, when we lay out this simple explanation, the person(s)
\r\neyes sort of glaze over. (we\'re approaching 70 and take no meds.)

\r\nI think it\'s just the thought of giving up Krispy Cremes, potao chips
\r\nCoke, Pepsi and Twinkies that just overwhelms them.

\r\n \r\n JPS, good for you, and I\'ve seen so many of those glassy stares that my response to the question of why I look 15 years younger than 60 has been truncated simply to "I learned how to eat."

\r\nStarting in mid \'03 I dropped 40 pounds on a strict Atkins regimen. Since then I\'ve dropped another 5 pounds via carb restriction (not abstinence) and I don\'t count carbs, calories or grams of anything. Truly, it\'s a matter of lifestyle change rather than just diet, and just me -' + '- if you need additional motivation please re-read the third paragraph on page 2-13 of Cancer Control: Your Integrative Strategy. Among other beneficial effects, reduced carb intake activates important lifespan influencing genes. The "discoveries" you list in your first post are good proof that you need to stay the course. \r\n \r\n I have learned to be much more sympathetic toward anyone who has a lot of weight to lose. I had just 10 pounds that I wanted to get rid of (mostly abdominal fat), but no matter what I did, I could not lose a single pound. There wasn\'t much in my diet that I thought I needed to change.

\r\nI have read all the diet books-' + '-from South Beach, Omega Zone Diet, Mercola No Grain Diet, Eat Right For Your Blood Type, Schwartzbein Principle (all three books), Bone Density Diet, Metabolic Typing, Ann Louise Gittleman\'s Fat Flush, Maker\'s Diet, Rosedale Diet, Cheri Calbom\'s The Coconut Diet, Eat Fat, Lose Fat by Enig and Fallon. But I think that the one I would recommend above all of these is Ultra-Metabolism by Mark Hyman.

\r\nOne principle from Schwarzbein, "You don\'t lose weight to get healthy, you have to get healthy to lose weight."

\r\nHere is one tip that I learned from one of these books, I don\'t remember which one-' + '-probably Ultra-metabolism. A study was done, I think testing vinegar for controlling insulin in diabetics. One of the things that they learned from the study was that those who took 2 tbsp of vinegar 20 minutes before each meal lost an average of 2 pounds a month while eating the same number of calories as the controls.

\r\nTwo pounds a month is not much for someone who has a lot of weight to lose, but for me it is working when nothing else did.\r\n

\r\n \r\n sorry ya\'ll, I promise I havent been out right ignoring you... I have been reading responses, but havent been up to posting.... mainly, because Ive been trying to get out of the carb binge.....and also, because big black labs cant be seen very well in the dark, and 300plus pounds hitting the floor makes for a very very sore body..... Imagine my surprise and thankfulness to God when I discovered that nothing was broke (cant imagine why the knee didnt shatter!?!) So been dealing with a sore back, leg, arm, and a headache from hell for the last week.... Today was actually the first day Ive been able to go back to the gym.....Not sure if the pain was as much from the fall as the carbs tho.. its really hard to tell....

\r\nAs much as I would like to say, quitting carbs has been really easy, I cant... It\'s hard!!! that first bite kills me, and having it in the house always seems to bring that first bite..... My kids have been real good about not having it here. We basically have stopped buying bread and all those bread goodies. I cant eat noodles or rice, because when I had my stomach stapled in the 90s, for some reason when I eat them, it causes me to vomit????(Is there a nicer way to say vomit?) Anyway, we have an extended family member, who has been spending alot of time here, and even tho I asked him not to bring the junk in, he feels he needs them and brings them in anyhow (gosh, how can you resist sausage and cheese biscuts, or taco bell???) ..... Also, I have been babysitting grandkiddos, and they too have been getting cereal, and sandwhiches...which while I know its not good for them, or me... I couldnt afford to do otherwise.... its one thing to feed just us living in the house a noncarb diet, but it gets really expensive to feed us and three more... I know, I know, excuses excuses... I am so sick of excuses..... what it boils down to, is that I am easily addicted... is that a vitamin deficency!!!!! It seems I have no will power, and not a very good self esteem, (when it comes to me, not my job or my kids).... It will be a long battle, unfortunately one I was hoping to see me win by next may (turning 50) but am really afraid that 200 pounds isnt going to able to be lost in 10 months.... I will say, that I havent gained the twenty pounds that took me 8 months to loose (???) and this last carb binge didnt put any weight back on.... I was actually pretty proud of myself..... I didnt binge too bad, (most wouldnt even call it a binge) a bowl or two of cereal, two grilled cheese sandwich one day... a candy bar one day (choc), a sausage cheese crossiant one day, but even that amount seems to make me hurt and slow, real slow ... so I know that I shouldnt be eating it..... But, I am back on the wagon again (where did that phrase come from?) I went to the gym this morning, and have had no carbs today, and didnt have any yesterday.. I did have a diet pepsi yesterday, but thats another whole addiction in itself!!!!!

You know, its always funny to hear me say it, but when I see fat people, I cringe.... one of my first reactions, is always, gosh am I that bad???? second one is, hey, I know how to fix you....and when I recently saw pictures of my sister\'s daughters, my thoughts were gee sister had a goiter, wonder if there are thyroid problems with all of them, and then wonder about me... yes I know, simple blood test, but for now, thats not even possible money wise.. I am so prejudice against fat people, and I have made my children prejudice against them also... and I have been fat most of my life.... isnt that strange... my oldest son doesnt even think fat people should be acknowledged.... but he wont ever say a bad word about mom (so strange?!) I think one of my hardest problems was, that I never saw me as obese... I didnt have a scale, so I never weighed, and when I looked in the mirror, I saw a me from ten years ago, when I was weighing around 175-200... yes that is still over weight, but not obese....and I dont understand. I once told my daughter and son in law (on a being honest day) that when I looked in the mirror I saw a person that was this big, and held my hands out about two feet apart....son in law sort of laughed, and said I missed it by alot, that I was cutting off about half of myself.... (yes it was okay, becus I was asking for help) so, maybe thats when my eyes started being opened... Im not sure how I could have lied to myself like that, but at times i will look in the mirror and see not the truth, but a lie..... (hehehe, then all I have to do is turn sideways, maybe thats my problem, I never looked at the side view!!!)
\r\nThe thought of giving up the food is ok with me most of the times.... but during stress times, I tend to revert back to the need food to hide the emotions.... food has always been my crutch. a mayo sandwhich is so much more soothing to me then crispy creams, I can give up the donuts, its the biscuts and breads that have always been my downfall.... And that mocha mudslide cream pie did me in this time!!!! The stress of having an out of town guest for two weeks, just sort of won out.... And heres the clincher ya\'ll while she was here, eating my cooking, and even tho she cheated a couple of times, and I didnt (well until the mocha mudslide) she went to town and ate junk food in her car!!!! She lost about five pounds while she was here. went down a pants size!!!! So apparently for the most part Ive got the food part down.... if I can stay away from the carb bingeing!!!!

\r\nI eat alot of vinegar, use to drink a cup of hot water with vinegar and honey as my first morning drink, maybe i need to get back into that.....
\r\nA friend of mine, that I met off the other board, sent me something he brewed up, called furnace fuel. its suppose to help rev up metabolism... its got horseradish root, prickley pear, ginger root, and cayenne, its doing something... sort of feels like a hot flash for about a half hour after I take it, so we shall see.... I am doing alot of little things.... still taking the vitamin c and the b vitamins..... sticking with my kefir, and was given a kombucha mushroom, so have been drinking the kombucha, sort of taste like vinegar, but starting to get use to it!!!!!

\r\nSo, questions... how much exercising is too much.... I have been going to the maxima gym.... I dont know if thats a corporate name, or the local name... but they have a work out that you do each machine for about ten seconds as fast as you can, and do steps in between each machine for 10 seconds, and the whole round of exercise takes 15 minutes, and thats suppose to be as good as doing a half hour????? So I have been trying to do that every morning, and if the tredmill is empty (yes they have more then one, but there is a weight limit problem on all but one) I will walk on the tredmill for about 15 minutes..... if its not empty, I will go to the track at the school and walk the track for a mile.. about 15 minutes... then in the evening, me and the big black lab go back to the track and walk it again.... two laps make a mile, and the dog is out of shape and fat like me, so thats our limit for now... dont want her to keel over from a heart attack while we are walking!!!! she wont stop, she sticks right by my side the whole way, no matter how hard it is for her!!!!... Do I need to add more exercises in there...... anybody???? Next question, if I end up having to pay out money and find out I do have a thyroid problem, does that make me fat for life???? I have been taking iodine, but I am trying to be cautious with it, since i am dosing myself, (with a little help from some friends) I did five drops in a liter of water once a day for a couple of months, and have now stopped... Do I need to keep going???? Can taking iodine help a thyroid problem?
\r\nI am still reading that adrenal exhaustion book... got stalled in the emotions section... well let me tell the truth here, I read the book, up until it got into the emotions part of the book, and then put it down... havent read it since.... and another good looking friend of mine, suggested I read Dr phils book. And he makes some good points, but I got to the part where we are suppose to deal with the emotions, and put the book down.... Do we see a trend here????? (LOL) Grandkids are gone now, back to school, so I have more time to read and get into this emotional haystack that I have..... Wonder if we can do it without doing a chocolate binge?????

\r\nSo, I am still on track..... sort of.... well I havent fallen off completely.... I have this burning desire to be at a goal weight of between 137 - 150 for my fiftyth birthday..... that gives me ten months..... but then again, back in January, I wanted to be 100 pounds lighter by July for a family reunion.... needless to say, I missed the family reunion, couldnt stand the thought of a sister telling me what a failure I am..... so I made sure I had excuses not to go (the daughter being deployed again really helped that) But come birthday time, guys, thats like a new beginning for me.... a new start on life, and I want to go into that new life a healthy skinny person.... not an overweight heart attack waiting to happen, lazy assed person who cant accomplish life.... yes I know..... Im not that person, but then again, yeah I am...... I am not sure how I will do this.... do you know how frustrating it is, to exercise two sometimes three times a day, and eat everything right, and I was eating less then 1200 calories a day..... for over a month, only to gain three pounds????? My kids keep telling me that it was becus fat was being turned into muscle, and I understand that... I have lost sizes, (inches?) but those damn numbers mean a hell of alot to me..... Maybe I need to go back to counting the calories again to see if I am actually eating more then I should......

\r\nIt has always been my opinion that the only reason a person gains excusive weight is because they eat an excusive amount of food. Of course individual body metabolism plays a roll, some people can eat like a horse and not put on any weight, and for others one extra calorie is instantly turned into fat. This is a real problem when friends are on their second and third helping and ask what is wrong don�t you like �their� food? How do you refuse gracefully, particularly when you actually want more?
\r\n
\r\nFoods that contain sugar or quickly convert to sugar need to be avoided, but they are usually the ones that make the meal enjoyable. So if one totally eliminates them from their diet they will make them selves miserable and probably not stay on the diet. Then even if they lose some weight using a particular diet as soon as they stop following the diet and go back to their old habits they will eventually find all of the weight that they lost and usually more.
\r\n
\r\nWhat is needed is a lifestyle change that one can actually live with. To me the key word here is moderation, eat whatever you want, with in reason, just don�t eat as much. I enjoy having a can of Coke with my meals, the real stuff not the diet, however I do not have to empty a three-liter bottle. Actually I will have half a can with lunch and the remainder with dinner. The rest of the day I have a thermos bottle of cold water that I regularity sip from. Desert is frequently half a chocolate chip cookie, ok these are large cookies. But I still have only half, I will take my time slowly nibbling away at it and thoroughly enjoy it. However even though chocolate cookies are the essence of all meaningful life I am not compelled to devour the entire box.

\r\nDuring the day if I get hungry I will have a small hand full peanuts, or raisins, etc. I will not deprive myself of �anything�. But the key word here being �small�, just enough to satisfy the taste craving.
\r\n
\r\nFriend wife is over weight. She can eat twice as much as me in half the time, although she tries to deny it. Eating slower is one way to eat less, by eating slower you will have more time to enjoy the food more and are less likely to over eat. Also you need to stop eating as soon as you feel full, if this means leaving food on the plate so be it. Do not feel guilty leaving food because there is a starving kid in lower slobova, your stuffing yourself will not help him.
\r\n
\r\nOne way too slow down your eating is to have something to read. I cannot eat if I don�t have some thing to read be it a magazine, newspaper (also makes a good place mat for catching crumbs and spills) if nothing else is available even the label on a ketchup bottle

\r\nOne thing I do remember hearing from some \'specialist\' on one of Oprah\'s weight loss shows was...try to stay off the scales in the beginning (though Oprah added she found that VERY hard to do as we all want to SEE THOSE NUMBERS!)

\r\nWhen I hear of people who have just one day decided that today is the day, and then end up loosing tons all on their own (with family and friend support, of course), I am very impressed. It isn\'t easy in these days of hectic, on the go, fast food eating.

\r\nThough I would really, really like to gain some weight, I do not want to go back to the unhealthy/less healthy eating to do so.
\r\nAnd, of course, we never get to choose \'where\' we want to gain.

\r\nOne good thing is that I have seen my little ole lady double chin fall away. Even as a thin younger person I have had a double chin. It could be the weight loss, but also late one night (early one morning), I remember hearing someone on a health program speak of how eating Salmon (O 3s) would help you loose that chin. The hr was soooo late that I was too foggy thinking to remember who and WHY/HOW.

\r\nSo hang in there...keep putting one foot in front of the other...continue making the best choices you can in eating, and of course, always adding to that bank of knowledge to draw on.
\r\nSince you are still YOUNG and healthy...you can slip on occasion w/o any guilt and then turn right back around and start over.

\r\n Maybe you can mentally talley how many sweets,carbs,bad fats,etc you have passed up, getting a thrill of seeing just how many things you have elected to give up, doing so only because you want to for years of better health.

\r\nAll the OLDER and younger people I know would give many,many coins for better health, but strangely not willing to make healthier choices for their own good.

Well maybe its because I dont have alot of stress factors..... plus, I think I am getting myself to a point where I am learning that stressing over it isnt going to change anything, so its wasted effort, and I have a very nice friend, who keeps reminding me that God says do not worry!!!! When I start to panic, I will send an email, and invaribly, he sends one back telling me to quit crying, and buck up!!! And yes I need that more then anything!! When I had my lap band surgury back in 90, I lost a total of a hundred and fifty pounds.... unfortunately, I didnt learn how to eat... a big downfall of the obesity doctors... and actually I learned to work around my surgury... I should have known something was wrong, when in the first six weeks( when you can only eat pureed foods), that I was pureeing pizza.... took in all the calories.... I stayed skinny for maybe two years, But then we bought a pizza joint, and the stress started pouring in.... and I became a nibbler. I couldnt eat alot at one time, so I would eat a little bit here, ten minutes later go back and eat a little bit and then a little bit more, to the point that I was grazing all day.. Until I finally reached over 300 pounds again. It has taken me two years, to finally get to a point, that I dont need bread, or potatoes. (rice and noodles I cant eat becus of the surgury) My sweet tooth seems to happen more during period times (or my chocolate days as we call them here) Ive never been one for having lots of cereal and junk food in the house, but I could binge on mayo and mustard sandwhiches all day long. I love fried seafood, and when we would go out, i would always order the seafood platter, and what I couldnt eat, I would take home and munch on the rest of the nite. I dont know portion control. I have been learning in these past couple of years, what I should and should not eat.... yeah its taken a while.... and believe I am getting alot better at it... I am learning, that sugar foods dont actually make the meal seem more pleasurable, but that they mask what the real food taste like... and that was a problem that I have always had, I need the taste, the sensation of different flavors to make me feel not hungry.... and I believe the carbs masked the flavors of other foods... Now that I am learning to eat different, I like the taste of veggies, the flavors range in such different styles, its hard to explain but I am learning to enjoy eating..... which brings me to your next point..... I keep trying to tell the grandson, that he eats so fast, he doesnt realize what he has eaten.... shoot he eats so fast, his mouth doesnt even get a chance to feel the food.... and I am no different... normally, I either eat while I am cooking for others, or eat while I am feeding others or doing something.... most times i wont eat till I am starving, and then I gobble it down..... Well, so for the past week, I have decided to eat two really good meals a day, and while I am eating, I am trying to actually do nothing else, but focus on the meal... I gave myself a 30 second rule, I take a bite, and chew it for thirty seconds.... If at the end of the thirty seconds, if the food is actually gone, I will take another bite, if it is not gone, I continue for another thirty seconds. This has slowed my eating down quit a bit. And I find that I am staying satisfied longer.
\r\n(finishing this later in the day... 6 pm texas time)
\r\nIts funny, I dont go for seconds, still cant eat that much at one time. Like I said, the few times, I get to go out, I usually bring home a doggie bag, because I cant eat a full meal.... but then the leftovers will be gone before i go to bed.... I dont eat food in the middle of the night. I dont eat alot of candy, except for my chocolate days, but I have learned that taking magnesium helps those cravings.... For awhile I did have the whipped cream cravings, and everyonce in awhile still do, but I think it was/is because I dont get enough fat in my diet, and that may be why I crave icecream too. It has taken me over two years, to get to a point where I actually believe that I now have enough knowledge, and enough strength to finally lose weight..... Before I started this journey, I was a big bread eater. Bread, bagels, english muffins, biscuts some type of bread product at every meal.... my favorite was always toast with butter, peanut butter and jelly spread thick!!!! I drank soda non stop. If I didnt have diet coke, I had regular coke, If I couldnt get coke, I would take whatever I could get, as long as its carbonated. It would be nothing for me to down two liters of coke in a day, probably more. I still crave my carbonation, but can drink mineral water or club soda and be happy with it.... The only time I want a diet coke or coke, is when I get the first one, and then its sort of like the lays potatoe chip ad, cant eat (or drink) just one... the same thing with bread, if I get the first bite, I dont want to stop, I am hungry all day. So for me, its better to just not eat it..... And since Ive been getting off the breads for quite awhile now, I dont miss it as much.... When i actually started working on getting myself ready to go on a diet persay, I knew that it would have to be lifestyle changes, and not just a quick approach to get the weight off... So I stopped eating bread, stopped buying it...except for rare occasions. I switched over to drinking more water, and have concentrated on upping my water intake... My body seems comfortable with about three quarts a day. I stopped grazing, started eating real meals. I started making myself eat a breakfast of protein and veggies, and am now learning to add fat to that meal. I dont keep junk food in the house, (my kids hate that) so now if I get hungry, I either eat a spoon of peanut butter, or a few almonds or do without.... And i started reading as much as I could about losing weight. Unfortunately, I have a hard time reading for long times, so I cant get into any scientific studies, but I have read articles, and magazines, and "dieting for dummies" and diet books. and Dr Gerrys book (bifrost) I have tried to find out what makes skinny people skinny, and what makes me fat..... I have learned that skinny people actually do have a different lifestyle then fat people, and I started getting a collection of little tips of how to lose weight and how to be skinny, and have tried to change my lifestyle. And I think I have seen alot of progress. I was using the accupressure points to help control hunger, and yes I believe it works. I try to drink a glass of water before i snack to see if maybe I am just thirsty. I brush my teeth more often and I try to move more....

\r\nOne last thing, Dr. Gerry, I think I am understanding your book, and am trying to do the basic.... I go walking or use the gazelle after eating... nothing real strenuous, but try to make it a point to move.....I pulled your book out, and reread it again, and decided to try your suggestions...... I have also recently read on a thyroid site, that if someone has thyroid problems, that it will take a minimum of an hours worth of exercise to do any good..... So, I have increased my exercise.... I am still doing the early morning gym session of a half hour, and do the evening walk at the track (about 15 to twenty minutes). But have also added walking up and down my driveway while waiting for the bus twice a day I do about a half hour of laps each time. and then after I eat in the morning, I am trying to use the gazelle for ten minutes...... My poor body is telling me that it is better to be lazy!!!! But, I have seen a weight loss of 6 pounds in the last two or three weeks, and it has stayed off for a week..... And I noticed last night, that I am not as hungry as what I have been before.... Normally, I can eat a burger, veggies, and a salad.... Last night, I was going to eat after I came home from my walk, but was only able to eat half the burger, and not even half a baked potatoe.... this morning, it was the same thing, I was able to eat half of my meal, realized that I wasnt hungry anymore, and so stopped eating, saved it for lunch.... Is this because I am doing more exercise....... Ok, sidetracked here.... sorry, Gerry, my question for you..... if muscle consumes fat at rest, then it would logically be better for me to have exercise as the last order of the day. If I eat before bed, then according to what I think I am reading, I need to make sure that I do some sort of moving, exercise, whatever after I eat, before I go to bed.... am I saying that right????

The doctor says that in order to get thyroid testing done, it will cost less then a hundred dollars???? anyone have any idea??? What specific test would I need?? \r\nI already knew, of course, that those simple carbs which were a vicious cycle feed for me, were not healthy, but then when I began to read/understand the link between how ALL of our grains are stored, thus exposing them/us to many really bad fungus\', I decided my health was not worth those grains, be they whole or half
\r\n (though in honesty, I do indulge on occasion in healthier grains)

\r\nI now eat no processed foods, and "precious" little sugar. I try to eat mainly fresh fruits and veggies, adding a bit of chicken for protein. I do not adhere to NO carbs.

\r\nI also indulge in IMHO, wayyyyy to much healthy organic yogurt. I am addicted to it. I add hands full of fresh berries and fresh ground flax, and that is how I justify eating soooooooo much.

\r\nSo...I am pretty sure it is the NO GRAINS (or rather...VERY LOW grains, PRECIOUS low sugar, and no processed, rather raw foods that have caused my weight loss.
\r\nI really would like to gain some weight back, but want to make sure it is as healthy as possible.

\r\nYou mentioned thyroid in one of your posts. Have you taken your basal body temp? Do you know how to do it? I know we have talked about it alot on the other forum, so I don\'t want to bore you. Anyway, I always had a very low temp. I had a blood test and the doctor said my thyroid was normal. These tests are not very accurate, about 20% from the research I have done. After supplementing with iodine, one drop of Iosol in juice daily, my temp has gone from 96 to 98.6. It took about a month for this to happen, and may have happened sooner if I had taken it every day. It has only been two weeks since my temp has been "normal", but I am hoping I will see some results soon such as weight loss ( I recently gained 10 lbs). Although, I do seem to have a lot more energy! No kidding! I have felt fatigued my entire life, and for no apparent reason, other than upping my iodine intake, I have energy! I also feel warmer. Which I hope means my metabolism has sped up and not a low grade fever! My sister and my cousin have hypothyroid. It seems to run in families. Just thought you might want to try taking your body temp. I\'ll let you know if there are any more positive results. One can only hope. Good luck!

\r\n \r\n ok So I had my thyroid checked (twice actually) Before I had the test done, the only supplement for thyroid that I had used was iodine, small dose and not steady... Like I took it for a month, and then stopped, and started up, and might have taken it for about two weeks, but then made the decision to get tested, so quit taking it for about two weeks before I went to get tested..... The first time, all the doctor tested was my tsh level, even though I asked for the T3 and the T4. A week later, got a letter in the mail that said my tsh level was 7.850 mlU/ml.... normal range being 0.4 - 5.7 The day after I got tested, I started a regime that was suggested to me by someone I trust...... I started taking.... 1000mg Vit C, b complex, tyrosine 500 mg. (this brand I took says L-tyrosine, what does that mean?) Selenium 200 mcg, vit a 10,000 iu, cod liver oil for the vit d benefit, and I also started taking a liquid multi vitamin/mineral product.... and I started taking a product from nutri+meds called adrenal... its a whole desicatted glandular concentrate (bovine) 100 mg, and started back on the iodine.....Took all this for two weeks, went back to the doctor to see what his next step would be, and it was to do another blood test.... this time he tested for the tsh and the T3 and the T4.... finally got the results back last week.... my tsh levels went up.... ?????? it is now 9.688... my T3 was 29 and my T4 was 5.0 and my free thyroxine level was 1.5.... He gave me a prescription for levothyroxin 50 mcg tab one tablet daily.....ok, so I feel like Im giving in and giving up... I went ahead and started taking them...stopped all the herbal, because I didnt know what I could mix with what. A few questions now please...... Why would my tsh level go up once I started taking the supplements.. Does that mean that I had the wrong supplements???? Also, I am having a very long period, It started when I was taking the supplements, and has lasted almost two weeks now.... Since Ive stopped the supplements and started the script, it has gone to mainly spotting, but still there.... And it was a very very heavy period.... Very tired, feel totally drained..... Also, I have noticed lately, that I am getting really depressed.... Massively depressed. This is probably the first time in five years, that I have actually just felt like chucking it all and running away from home... I have never had a problem with being at home, I have always loved being home.... but now its driving me crazy.... I am trying to come up with ways of how I can get an outside job just so I can get out of the house..... Even knowing, that after Nov 3, the only time I will actually be able to get out will be maybe once a week if I am lucky (geesh, I have to fix this depression quick)..... What am I doing wrong???? I was doing so good with the eating and the exercising, but within the past week or so, I havent cared....I am not sure if it started before I was taking the medicine, or even if it started before I was taking the supplements,..... I dont actually know when it started, but its been at least a few weeks.... My first test was on Sept 11, so I started the supplements on the 12th of Sept.... then my next appointment was on the 26 of Sept, but I didnt start taking the script until Oct 3..... wait a minute.... the depression did start long before I started the script.... cus Ive only been taking the script for four days.... but Im not sure if its worse now or Im just noticing it more..... Oh, and as far as to what I am eating.... I stopped eating raw spinach, broccoli, cabbage and anything else I could find that was considered a goitergen.... I have no taste for anything, but meat..... The depression is taking such a hold again, that I dont want to cook.... I am finding the easy way out.... ordering sandwiches or pizza a few times.... eating canned soup.... nothing healthy.... oatmeal.... I dont want to cook... I dont want to do a damn thing.... I have to force myself to get out of bed, and go walking, I am still doing at least a half hour of walking three times a week... but try to go for an hours worth of walking a half hour on the gazelle and then about twenty minutes worth of exercise... I do that two times a week, and know I need to do it more, but I just dont have the energy..... And once I do the hours worth of exercise in the morning, I feel so drained, I cant get any housework done..... Am I going crazy???? Help!!!!!! Am I doing something wrong... I have to be.... How do I fix this.... The depression has me more concerned then anything..... I have to get rid of it as soon as possible...... What am I missing??? \r\nHypothyroidism can cause depression. My sister was taking zoloft for years when she discovered she was hypothyroid. She is taking Synthroid, but is having a great deal of trouble getting off the zoloft. You didn\'t mention anything about your iodine levels after being tested. Taking too much iodine can actually cause hypothyroidism. You also didn\'t mention what your levels of anitbodies are. Were you even tested for that. If your levels of antibodies are high that can be Hoshimotos, which is an autoimmune disorder of the thyroid. I would recommend reading everything there is to read at this website:

\r\nJust thought I\'d mention that there are several quizes you can take on Mary\'s website to help you figure things out. I have taken them all! Also, I was wondering what your temperature is? It will be different in the morning than in the afternoon. If it is lower than 97.6 at any time you are probably hypothyroid. And personally, if I were to take thyroid medication it would be ArmourThyroid, which is not synthetic. Armour has T3 and T4. I am not a doctor, but it seems as though your T4 is not being converted into T3, or not being utilized correctly. You can learn about this on Mary Shomon\'s website. My cousin started taking thyroid meds about a year ago and it took almost that long for her to find just the right amount. She is also taking levothyroxin. She started at 50 mg. and is now taking 250 mg. Did you have your adrenals tested? If your adrenals are low, that can cause problems with the thyroid, too. Good luck!

\r\nJust thought I\'d throw this in. Maureen Salaman, Nutritionist, says that anytime you are deficient in any vitamin or mineral, you will become depressed! So, please don\'t stop taking your liquid vit/min supplement. By the way, what brand are you taking and where do you get it. I am taking a liquid mineral with vitamin capsules, but have been looking for a really good liquid vit/mineral formula. The less capsules the better. Thanks,

Sally and Early Bird, thanks for the info... as soon as I finish baths and dishes, I will sit down and start reading..... need to figure this out.... I feel like I am on a time line here..... Son leaves for Ft Jackson on the first weekend of November.... for another possible deployment to Iraq.... so he will be gone for 18 months if he passes all his medical exams (so wrong to wish your kid was sick).... The youngest daughter is stationed at the border, and will be there at least another year, and the other two kids are married out on their own with families of their own... one son still in Kosovo, and the pregnant daughter is in Indiana, so my support group sort of dwindled on me... hmmmmm but it will be ok.... all things work for good.... So this will all be fine, I just need to do some fine tuning I guess....

\r\n \r\n sally, was rereading post, and just realised that I forgot to answer the temp question.... I ran my temperature for about five days in a row... I think I might have hit 97.1 one day, but the other times, it was below 97... like 96.6, 96.8 I think the lowest one day was 96.4.... and that with me putting the thermometer under my arm, rolling over so I was laying on my arm... and had a quilt on top of me.... laid that way until the snooze alarm went off nine minutes later..... so thats when I actually decided that I needed to go do blood work.... And as for the other test you mentioned... I had to ask for these results.... so they didnt offer anything else.....But I have to go up to their office this week anyway, I will see if I can get a copy of both sets of lab work results....\r\n

\r\n \r\n Not wanting to throw this thread off track or anything, but I have a dumb question.... And I didnt really think it was worth the space of a whole new thread...... Because of my job and because my son has been gone so much, I have not been able to go to the track... geesh, Im lucky if I get to go to the gym.... So instead of walking the track, I walk up and down my driveway.....I live out in the country, so my driveway is fairly long..... We figured that if I walk up and down my driveway 15 times, that is approximately a mile.... (hmmm I remember a time when I could walk a 15 minute mile, now it takes me a half hour).... Anyway, my driveway is not concrete or asphalt or anything fancy... Its a regular gravel dirt driveway with lots of big rocks and holes and ups and downs..... I try to walk it a half hour in the morning and a half hour in the afternoon..... Well last night while I was shutting down my computer, I moved my arm, and my neck messed up. Sudden pain in the left side of the neck ( I am left handed, was moving my left arm) I have been in severe pain ever since. I am crooked, cant keep my head up straight, and when I do put it straight, it feels like I cant hold it up for very long...and then the right side of the neck starts hurting..... This is the second time within a months time that this has happened..... Could it be because of my walking the driveway???? Could the rocks and the bumps in the road be causing problems with my back.... I know that sounds dumb (Ok to me it sounds dumb) but I cant think of any other reason why its messing up so bad.... Last time it took three days, and then was still a bit sensitive for awhile after that......If its not the driveway, what else could I have done????? Anyone got any bright ideas??????\r\n

\r\n \r\n That happens to me sometimes when I\'m in the car and I turn my head to see behind me when I\'m backing up. I figured it was a pinched nerve. It usually takes a few days for the pain to go away. Maybe you should post that question on healthiertalk. There seem to be more knowledgable chiros there.

\r\n \r\n I called a compounding pharmacist today, who also deals with homeopathics, because I was told that he could get the hormone testing done for me without me seeing a doctor. I have been wondering if I could be going into menopause, and wondered if that could also be one of my problems.... It was a very informative afternoon..... He set me up to do an adrenal stress panel and some type of insulin testing.... Also told me that if I had the wrong type of thermometer, then it would make a difference on the results of the basal temp thing.... Also told me to make sure I did the basal temp test 12days after the last day of a period... and test for 7 days.... said that would give him insite to my metabolic something, I cant remember what he called it.... He also informed me, that if my adrenals are messed up, then anything I took to help my thyroid, still wouldnt help me to lose weight..... aint that a piece of work.... now you would figure, that a regular doctor would know what to test for first... I asked my regular doctor if he could test me to check for adrenal problems while he was testing for the thyroid, and he said that we would work on the thyroid first, and if that didnt work, then we would test the adrenals... Supposedly to save me money, but I think it would cost more in the long run doing it his way. So, I am going to be spending some time and money trying to fit all these puzzle pieces together. I guess the saying of, it took me how many years to ruin my body, it will of course take time to rebuild it up, fits me well..... I may not be at my goal weight for my fiftyth birthday, but I will be the healthiest I can be, and I will still be slimmmer then what I am now.... Oh and by the way, on the positive note.... while it may have taken me 9 months to lose these 17 pounds that I lost, (I do believe losing is better then gaining).... I finally noticed last night, that I have lost 4 pants sizes.... so that made me feel really really good, so I treated myself today, and went and got my hair cut....cut a whole bunch off...... use to be half way down my back, now its just a bit longer then shoulder length, and changed the style, will have to get use to having bangs, instead of all my hair pulled back to keep it out of the way.....

I put a heating pad(well its not a pad, its a tubesock with rice in it heated in the microwave) on it last night before I went to bed.... But when I woke up this morning, I was sooo dizzy, stumbled around with the dizziness for over an hour. But, I was able to go walking today. I put the heating pad around my neck, sort of hoping that it would help while i was walking... it did seem to.... but I think part of the reason why it helped, was because it seemed like support, like it was holding my neck up.. But so I am on the mend.... Just need to figure out if my messed up driveway could be causing the problem......

\r\n \r\n I am beginning to think, that my neck problems are being caused by the levothyroxin. When my neck first messed up, I was in so much pain that I forgot to take the medicine for a few days.... maybe like three. The pain was pretty severe for about two days, and then pretty much started to subside. Was able to walk and do all my daily stuff.... But so then I started back on the levothyroxin, and it seems like my neck is hurting worse again.... well yes its hurting worse again, but it seemed to correlate with me taking the levothyroxin. And now, its not just on one side, both sides are hurting, at this point, the right side is hurting more then the left... And I just looked in the mirror, and realised that I have swelling at the base of the neck..I dont know if I could explain this, but if you put your fingers on those two sharp bones in your throat, and then run your fingers around your neck like where your collar would go, the swelling is straight down below the ears... but like I said at the base of the neck.... I dont think its fat...I have never noticed it before. Dern it, Im beginning to feel like Im falling apart..... Am I gonna get alot worse before I get better...... I stopped the levrothyroxin today..... Could this be bad enough that I have to go see the doctor again??? Gosh I hate doctors, and hate giving them money I dont have......If I stop the levrothyroxin then I should see improvement within a few days, if thats what causing it ??yes???? Im beginning to think, maybe the best thing for me to do is to do a total body cleanse....but shoot, I wouldnt even know where to start.... Is there a way, I can get this medicine out of my body faster, or is my body needing this medicine so bad that its causing me pain???? That doesnt sound right to me..... not to be hurting this bad.... And to let ya\'ll know, I have a very high pain tolerance, when it comes to pain, I am not a wimp..... I usually can handle it pretty good, but this is beginning to get to me..... I am having trouble moving my fostor daughter around, and doing normal life.... Stopping the medicine seems like the right thing to do.... yeah?????? Oh and by the way, I dont have a problem going to a chiropractor, I just really really cant afford it.... although I may end up borrowing money from a kid and go see one if this keeps up much longer.... \r\nDid you read the insert that comes with the thyroid medication? Maybe that can tell you what the side effects are?! I am just as confused as you are when it comes to the thyroid. Seems most doctors don\'t have much of a clue either. I know what you mean about spending money to see a doctor. I just cancelled our outpatient insurance, so now all we have is hospitalization. It was costing us over $700.00 a month and we never even used it! Now we are paying $200.00 a month. I have been putting off getting my thyroid tested because a lot of doctors say the tests are so unreliable. I have been in a quandry about this for a while. I know there can be consequences if your thyroid isn\'t functioning properly. I suppose I\'ll have to break down and do it soon. There is also a forum at Mary Shomons website. www.thyroid.about.com Maybe you could ask some questions there. Good luck with your endeavors. Keep us informed. I am learning alot from your experiences, too! And by the way, I have been taking dessicated adrenals and thyroid for about a year now, and my temp has gone from about 96 to 98.3, so it must be doing something!?

\r\nSeeing a chiro is actually not a possibility at this point.... There are times in your life when you have to choose which is more important, and this month fighting a forclosure is just more important... So am dealing with all this the best I can at this point.....
\r\nBut, I am really beginning to believe big time that the neck pain is being caused by the levrothyroxin... And no, for some reason, I didnt get a flyer explaining all the side effects, (that was strange, I didnt even think about it till you said something) but I did call the pharmacist who filled the script, and he said no, he cant imagine that the med would cause it... So, beginning to feel like I was losing it, I called the compounding pharmacist, who is doing the adrenal test for me.. and his comment was..... if you are driving in your car going down a road at 30 miles an hour, and you miss a curve and run your car into a tree... when you go get your new car, drive down the same road, going the same 30 miles an hour, are you gonna hit that tree again.... hey if it quacks like a duck type thing..... He suggested that I wait another couple of days, and then start the medicine again... and then if my neck starts hurting, then we know for sure.... Which sounds like a logical way to do this.... but who wants to even try and go through that pain again.... By the way... I stopped the medicine on sunday (sat was my last day) and the pain is now basically gone... still a bit stiff, but I can move it and hold my head up without feeling like its gonna fall off.... So.... I think I will wait for a couple of weeks.... We are fixing to do the farewell thing with my son, and I dont want to be in pain while we are trying to enjoy our short time with him...

I do get on the damn thing every day, and get error...Which is frustrating... but hmmm It\'s ok, it wont be that way for much longer... I did get my thyroid levels tested.... I will have to go back and see if I posted all the results on here, I think I did.... but if not I will put them up here..... So, I am assuming, from what you are saying, it was the iodine I was taking that raised the tsh levels up the second round, and not the dessicated thyroid??? \r\n I did my adrenal stress test yesterday... consisted of putting a cotton swab under my tongue and letting it get saturated with my saliva four times during the day.... First thing in the am before I ate or drank anything but water (no caffiene yesterday) then I had to eat 200 calories of fast acting carbs... I ate what the list suggested, two pieces of white bread and 8 ounces of orange juice, and then an hour later do the cotton swab thing before 1pm and then again at 5 pm and then again at midnight.... I had to record everthing I ate, and drank... even if I chewed gum... freeze the vials that the cotton swabs were in until this morning when I overnight mailed them to the lab.... The pharmacist said that this was the starting point..... so this should tell us alot..... when I read that book, Adrenal Fatigue, I answered all the questions in their test they have in the book... and I scored so badly, that the book suggested if I scored in these levels.. that I should be tested for addisons disease.... So when I suggested to my doctor that I would like to be tested for adrenal problems he says... thyroid first, and if the meds dont work then we will look further... the pharmacist says thats backwards!!!!

Default My discoveries!!! (weight loss/nutrition)

since I have started to officially try to lose weight, I have began to learn a few things about my body, and eating habits..... I have wondered about these discoveries of mine, and have wondered if anyone else has seen these problems and/or truths(for lack of a better word)
I have discovered, that when I eat highly processed carbs, like bread, pizza or that almond mocha cheesecake today, that:
1. I get real tired
2. I get brain fog
3. my ankles and feet swell
4. my back starts hurting
5. my whole body seems to get stiff and sore
6. I get fever blisters.
7. I get cyst, usually around my private areas.
8. I have a hard time staying asleep at night
9. They make my chocolate days (period time) worse
10. I am more hungry
11. Once I start eating these types of carbs, I cant quit for the whole day
12. I always have severe headaches during the night, and will wake up with terrible headaches.
13 I have no energy, cant get anything done, have trouble even getting out of my chair.
14. I have a hard time driving, because I cant stay awake, and sort of zone out, while driving
15... when I made my list of all the things that these carbs do to me, my daughter added on the bottom of the list, "they make you bitchy"
So apparently according to children, when I eat alot of these types carbs, I have mood problems

I have also noticed, in these past few weeks, that when I eat these types of carbs, I have no desire to go exercise.... when I dont eat them, I cant wait to go to the gym or the track.... Without these carbs, I enjoy getting up early and going to the gym for a half hour, and then enjoy my evening walk at the track in the evening.....
But I have also noticed, that its easier to walk on the tredmill, then on the track.....why is that????

I have also noticed, that yes, I believe that taking the oil (shangra-la diet) actually does cut down my appetite, when I remember to take it.... I dont seem hungry... now if I can just stop the habit of putting food in my mouth out of boredom...

I have also noticed, that taking magnesium keeps me from having those chocolate cravings right before period time (hence my calling them chocolate days)
I have noticed too, that taking vitamin c helps to reduce my sweets cravings.... where did I read that, does anyone know???

I have noticed lately, (and dont really want to experiment on it) that when I had accidently stepped on an ant hill last week, and when I got ants all over my hands the other day, that even though these fire ants were biting me, I did not show any signs of bites..... could this actually be because I havent been eating any processed carbs lately??? Or is there maybe something in vit C or the kefir that stops the poison from festering up.....

And I have noticed that even though the scales show that I am not losing pounds, my clothes fit better, and my whole attitude feels skinnier... does that make sense????

So, it seems that there were more discoveries, that I was going to share with you, but a family friend came into town today bearing gifts of shipleys kolachys, and the almond mocha cheesecake, that I of course couldnt turn down....( boy do I wish I did now... I hurt bad..... someone needs to discover a way to remember the pain, so we arent foolish enough to keep going back to it) But I cant remember what the other ones were, I had a larger list yesterday..... But so my question is, do other people have these problems when eating carbs or processed foods... is it the processed foods, or is it the carbohydrates that causes the problems..... What have all of you others that have stopped the carbs discovered about getting off of them..... My curiosity is aroused, I wonder, what would have happend if I found all this information years ago... and of course I wonder, how long will it take me to have the strength to say no, when someone brings them little nasties into my house!!!!!
