Default Eucalyptus Gum May Combat Periodontal Disease

Quote:
In a double-masked, randomized, controlled study involving 97 healthy subjects with gingivitis, results indicate that chewing gum supplemented with eucalyptus extract may improve periodontal health.

The subjects were randomized to 1 of 3 groups for a period of 12 weeks: 1) high-concentration group: (n=32) received 0.6% eucalyptus extract chewing gum; 2) low-concentration group: (n=32) received 0.4% eucalyptus extract chewing gum; 3) placebo group: (n=33) received chewing gum without eucalyptus extract.

Subjects in both high- and low-concentration groups showed significant improvement in plaque accumulation, gingival index, bleeding on probing, and periodontal probing depth, compared with the placebo group.

Thus, the authors of this study conclude, "The use of eucalyptus extract chewing gum may promote periodontal health."

Eucalyptus has some anti-bacterial properties doesn't it? Evidence is showing tooth decay being caused by bacteria in the mouth. Thanks for the article.

Hi Harry! Good to see you. Your blog is looking really goo too.
My husband uses this gum product and we both use the toothpaste.
iHerb.com - Search - spry
and we have cranberry sauce with dinner a lot at our house. wonder if that helps...and when I make it I sweeten it with xylitol!

Howdy, Arrowwind. Nice to see you as well.

It looks like you and your husband have many of the bases covered.

I often use the Spry gum and mints. I haven't tried the toothpaste yet however. They appear to be pretty good products - taste great too.

Thanks for your kind words about the blog!
