Default for all cat and coffee lovers

This is from the Drudge Report it is for all cat and coffee lovers

World's most expensive coffee at 50 a cup comes to British stores...and it's made from cats' droppings

By EMILY ANDREWS
It might not be to everyone's taste - and that's not just because at 50 a cup it's the most expensive coffee in the world.
The secret behind the special blend about to go on sale at an upmarket department store is that it is made from cats' droppings.
While such an ingredient might leave many spluttering into their cups, Peter Jones thinks it is on to a winner.
For the rest of April, it is serving espressos, Americanos and lattes made from the droppings in its in-store coffee shop in Sloane Square, central London.
And for those who want the ultimate talking point over the after-dinner mints, the coffee beans are also on sale at 50 for 100 grams.
The store, part of the John Lewis partnership, has bought 60 packets of the exclusive blend of JamaicanBlueMountain and the Kupi Luwak bean.
The bean is rare, with less than 450lb harvested each year.
The beans are extracted from the droppings of the palm civet, a cross between a cat and a monkey which lives in Indonesia.
The civets eat the soft coffee cherries, digest the fruit pulp and excrete the beans on the forest floor, because they cannot digest the beans.
Plantation workers then collect the beans, which are sold as Luwak coffee.
The civets are said to pick the best and ripest coffee berries.
It is also thought that their gastric juices may add to the flavour.
Now Peter Jones customers can taste flavour for themselves, with all proceeds from sales going to a cancer charity.
One, 23-year-old Hannah Silver, said: "I was a little apprehensive before I tried it but I actually really liked it. It was very earthy and it tastes very smooth.
"It wasn't too bitter and the earthiness really came through - probably because of where the beans have come from.
"It is a delicacy so I can definitely see someone wanting to pay 50 for this, perhaps for a present."
A Peter Jones spokesman said: "We wanted to give our customers a really special experience."

Ack!!! talk about taking literary license! a PALM CIVIT is NOT A CROSS BETWEEN A MONKEY AND A CAT!!! take it from scorpiotiger, dinner and movie might be a possibility, but a cat would never cross with a monkey!!!

and as far as bathroom habits? cats have dignity!!! cats bury their dropping for a reason!!! To keep them hidden from gourmet coffee sellers!

HERE IS A PALM CIVIT:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_Palm_Civet

now I ask you... DOES THIS LOOK LIKE A CAT?

PHHHHTTTT!

The coffee beans must have been sterilised by washing, roasting and the processing necessary for food quality. But I won't buy any because of the ridiculous price. If a charity wants a donation, they should ask in the normal way!
No. that civet doesn't look like a cat

Who writes this drudge report, anyway?

Xania,

The piece wasn't written by the Drudge Report. It was linked on the Drudge Report (and on many other sites).

The Drudge Report, for the most part, simply collects news items from all over the world. This article was likely of UK origin (based on the currency mentioned ... and the lack of comparison/conversion into dollars.

Default coffee/caffeine..

Don't get me started on coffee/caffeine. It is BAD NEWS, however it is GOOD BUSINESS.
Coffee can help with swollen legs, etc., and can help remove water from the body. It can also be used as an enema, which may be of some help, and there may be other positive things about coffee.
Now lets look at the downside:
Coffee affects blood pressure.
Coffee shrinks blood vessels, especially the tiny ones that cary oxygen and nutrients to brain cells.
Coffee makes the body acidic.
Coffee causes heart problems, irregular heartbeat, agitation, and disorientation.
Coffee/caffeine is an addictive drug.
Caffeine reduces blood flow, which can result in headaches/migraines.
Caffeine affects sleeping habits, therefore can alter behaviour.
Coffee/caffeine is linked to "restless legs syndrome".
Coffee affects mental/motor skills.
OH, I nearly forgot, coffee can cause CANCER.
There are other things about coffee that are unknown, however, in my opinion, caffeine has an overall negative health effect on the body.

*On a final note, I was a heavy coffee drinker, and when I quit I had a headache for three days. However since then, health is much improved with no headaches.

Anyone who thinks coffee prevents disease or is healthy in any way, is only fooling themselves. Just because millions use it, doesn't make it right.

**Yes you will find studies that show some benefit, but for every positive study there is 100 negative studies, so take a look at both, and lets not forget the coffee industry is powerful, just like big pharma, although I don't quite know what to say about cat-sh!t coffee...

Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev. 2008 Apr;17(4):895-901.

Coffee Consumption and CYP1A2*1F Genotype Modify Age at Breast Cancer Diagnosis and Estrogen Receptor Status.

Bgeman E, Ingvar C, Rose C, Jernstrm H.

Lund University Hospital, Barngatan 2B, SE-221 85 Lund, Sweden. [email protected].

CYP1A2 plays a key role in the metabolism of both estrogen and coffee. Women with higher coffee intake and the CYP1A2*1F A/A genotype have a ratio of high 2-hydroxyestrone (2-OHE1) to 16alpha-OHE1. 2-OHE1 is a weak estrogen and may even block the estrogen receptor (ER), whereas 16alpha-OHE1 is procarcinogenic.

We hypothesized that moderate to high coffee consumption (>/=2 cups per day) combined with the CYP1A2*1F A/A genotype would be associated with a later age at diagnosis and a greater proportion of ER-negative (ER-) tumors among patients with breast cancer.

We genotyped 458 patients with breast cancer (age, 25-99 years) in Lund, Sweden, for CYP1A2*1F. Information on lifestyle factors and tumor characteristics were obtained from preoperative questionnaires and pathology reports. Among patients with CYP1A2*1F A/A (51.3%), moderate to high consumption was associated with a later age at diagnosis compared with low coffee consumption (59.8 versus 52.6 years, P = 0.0004). These patients were also more likely to have ER- tumors than patients with low consumption (14.7% versus 0%, P = 0.018).

Coffee was not associated with ER status or age at diagnosis in patients with at least one C allele. Age at diagnosis was not associated with ER status in patients with CYP1A2*1F A/A, but younger patients (<50 years) with at least one C allele were more likely to have ER- tumors compared with older patients (odds ratio, 4.2; 95% confidence interval, 1.9-9.3; P = 0.0002).

These findings raise the hypothesis that coffee slows the growth of ER-positive tumors in patients with CYP1A2*1F A/A and may have implications for breast cancer if confirmed. (Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev 2008;17(4):895-901).

This actually isn't a new thing.

If you look on Google, you will find referances to Weasel Coffee, made in Vietnam if I remember. Same principle, but with Weasel Crap.

I saw this about 4 years ago on the web, and they tried to make out it was a good thing, because the "impoverished" Farmers, can make better money, from the work western countries consuming it can bring.

I found such ethos, a bit dishonourable though. I wouldn't like to be an impoverished Vietnamese Farrmer, but making the buying of such arguably foul products, out to be some kind of humanitarian thing, to me just looked almost morally beyond reproach.
